Concerns with how cultural factors influenced agrarian social change remained an abiding interest in the work of James Scott. I begin by sketching out the context of debates in Marxist theory, development studies, and social and political anthropology that, during the 1980s, turned to relations between ideas, power, and processes of conflict and change in a world of new postcolonial nations and rapid agrarian development. In the article, then, I carefully examine the ideas Scott developed about resistance and hegemony in conversation with the work of E. P. Thompson. Tracing the genealogy of Scott's ideas about hegemony and rural social protest, I comment in some detail on the literature on resistance that arose in anthropology during the 1980s and the role of Scott's Weapons of the Weak (1985) in shaping that literature while interacting with Subaltern Studies (Guha 1982–87), studies of social movements, and examinations of power in interpersonal relations.  相似文献

The production of heat shock proteins was compared in sorghumand pearl millet genotypes differing in seedling establishmentcharacteristics under heat stress. Two major heat shock proteins(hsps) of apparent mol. wt. 65 kD and 62 kD were seen in allthe genotypes of sorghum tested when the incubation temperatureof the 40 h seedlings was altered from 35 ?C to 45 ?C for 2h. Under identical conditions, pearl millet genotypes showedmore hsps and the apparent mol. wt. of these ranged from 30–70kD. The hsp bands were more prominent in whole seedlings androots as compared to plumules. Differences in the productionof hsps were seen in sorghum and pearl millet genotypes withcontrasting heat tolerance at seedling establishment stage butthe significance of these needs to be studied further. Leaf surface wetness (LSW) of the central whorl leaf of sorghum seedlings has been associated with susceptibility to shoot fly. Previous physical and physiological evidence suggested that LSW originates from the plant. This was confirmed by radioactive labelling methods using tritium and carbon-14. Tritiated water applied to the soil of potted seedlings was translocated to the surface of the whorl leaf. There were significant differences in the amount of tritiated water collected from susceptible (CSH 5) and resistant (IS 18551) genotypes. Studies with carbon-14 labelling of sorghum seedlings indicated the presence of (small amounts of) solutes in the surface water that may affect larval movement and survival.  相似文献

The life cycle of the cladoceran Simocephalus acutirostratus has been studied in the laboratory with reference to its total life span, duration of instars, egg production and growth. It has four pre-adult and eighteen adult instars and produces about 248 eggs during a mean life span of 44 days within a temperature range of 28°C-30°C. Egg production was found to be bimodal, with a sharp decline towards the end of the life cycle. The present results are compared and discussed with those of other tropical and temperate daphnids. It has been shown that while this species resembles most other daphnids (D. middendorffiana, D. pulex, D. carinata) in the growth pattern of pre-adult instars, it resembles the temperate D. pulex in having a relatively long life span, relatively high egg production and slow rate of growth. While studies on embryonic development of S. acutirostratus resemble the growth stages of the temperate Daphnia magna, there are differences in the total period of development between the two species. In the latter aspect, however, the present species closely resembles other tropical daphnids.  相似文献
