As reported by many workers over the past two centuries, the inner part of the shell of various straight and coiled Palaeozoic to tertiary nautiloid taxa bears a continuous mid-ventral furrow that extends into the phragmocone and the body chamber nearly to the aperture. Study of the early embryonic shell development of Jurassic Nautilida shows that the most apical part of this so-called conchal furrow originates from the inner part of the initial, calcified shell apex, in line with the inner ventral termination of the central linear depression of the cicatrix, the initial site of shell deposition. The conchal furrow corresponds to a morphological feature arising as a developmental by-product. Rare specimens of scattered ammonoid species (and possibly of bactritoids) display a similar feature, whereas their protoconch lacks a cicatrix. However, the protoconch of recent cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, often displays a longitudinal fold of the primary shell epithelium. A longitudinal groove or a pair of grooves appears connected with this cicatrix-like structure. Although the mid-ventral ridge in ammonoids must probably be viewed as an incidental 'fabricational noise', whether or not it originates from a so far undocumented optional ridge on the protoconch or from some other structure related to shell development remains an open question.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic disturbances of the physical habitat and corresponding effects on fish performance are key issues in stream conservation and restoration. Reduced habitat complexity because of increased sediment loadings and canalization is of particular importance, but it is not clear to what extent fish populations are influenced directly by changes in the physical environment, or indirectly through changes in the biotic environment affecting the food availability. 2. Here, we test for the direct effect of habitat complexity on the performance (growth) of juvenile Atlantic salmon by manipulating shelter availability (interstitial spaces in the substrate) across 20 semi‐natural stream channels without altering the substrate composition, and stocking each channel with a common density of fish. A simple method for measuring salmonid shelters using flexible PVC tubes was developed and tested. Daytime sheltering behaviour and growth rates were compared across the channels differing in shelter availability. 3. Measured shelter availability was strongly negatively correlated with observed number of fish not finding shelters and mass loss rates of the fish (growth performance) increased with decreasing number of measured shelters. Number and mean depth of interstitial spaces explained up to 68% and 24% of the among‐channel variation in sheltering behaviour and growth performance, respectively. Furthermore, negative effects of shelter reduction increased with fish body size. Thus, changes in habitat structure may even influence the size selection gradients. 4. Shelter availability is an easily measured variable, possibly affecting the population demographics and long‐term evolutionary processes, and is therefore a key habitat factor to be considered in stream restoration and habitat classification.  相似文献

The circumarctic clonal plant Saxifraga cernua reproduces efficiently via bulbils, largely depends on insects for pollination and appears to set seed very rarely. However, high levels of genotypic variation observed at small spatial scales in the arctic archipelago of Svalbard have been taken as evidence of occasional sexual reproduction. Here we assess the relative contributions of mutation and recombination to random amplified polymorphic DNA variation in four populations in East Greenland and re-analyse the Svalbard data. Greater variation due to recombination was predicted in Greenland than in Svalbard, because the higher summer temperatures and longer growing season likely increase the chances for sexual reproduction. Although we observed higher levels of genotypic diversity in Greenland than in Svalbard, matrix incompatibility and linkage disequilibrium measures provided no evidence of more sexuality, suggesting differences in glacial/postglacial history. The genetic structure and spatial distribution of clones suggest that clonal migration may increase variability in local populations, which is consistent with frequent large-scale migration in this species inferred from a circumarctic analysis of chloroplast DNA haplotypes. We conclude that a combination of somatic mutations and sexual reproduction has contributed to the observed patterns of genotypic diversity in the Greenland and Svalbard populations of S. cernua , and that sexual reproduction is important in maintaining genotypic diversity, despite the rarity of observations of seed setting.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 152 , 209–217.  相似文献
