Samples of current-year and 1-year-old foliage were taken from Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees in April 1991, 4 months after a 3–4 year controlled fumigation with O3 and SO2 in the open at Liphook, south-east England. Trees were grown in seven plots, and treated in a factorial design with three levels of SO2 and two levels of O3 (ambient and c. 1.3 × ambient), with an extra ambient air plot. All statistical analyses were made on plot means. Leaf wettability, as measured by the contact angle of water droplets, was significantly affected by needle age and by SO2 treatment (P≤0–05. in older needles, decreasing with increasing SO2 concentration. There was no effect of O3 on wettability, and no effect of any treatment on amounts of surface wax extracted by immersion of needles in chloroform. Electrolyte leakage rates from detached current-year needles were not affected by prior exposure to O3, but decreased significantly (P= 0.034) with increasing exposure to SO2. There was no detectable effect of fumigation on the rate of water loss from detached needles. Similarly, there was no effect of fumigation on the dry weight/fresh weight ratio of needles. The total sulphur content of needles increased significantly (P≤0.0001) with exposure to SO2 and with needle age. Amounts of water-extractable sulphate, however, varied greatly among plots, but with no pattern with respect to fumigation treatment. It is concluded that leaf wettability and electrolyte leakage rates may be good indicators of the persistent effects of SO2 on Norway spruce growing in the open air, and that the observed changes in leaf surface properties in response to SO2 fumigation have implications for the processes, both biotic and abiotic, that occur on leaf surfaces.  相似文献

Bacterial populations can display high levels of genetic structuring but the forces that influence this are incompletely understood. Here, by combining modelling approaches with multilocus sequence data for the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter, we investigated how ecological factors such as niche (host) separation relate to population structure. We analysed seven housekeeping genes from published C. jejuni and C. coli isolate collections from a range of food and wild animal sources as well as abiotic environments. By reconstructing genetic structure and the patterns of ancestry, we quantified C. jejuni host association, inferred ancestral populations, investigated genetic admixture in different hosts and determined the host origin of recombinant C. jejuni alleles found in hybrid C. coli lineages. Phylogenetically distinct C. jejuni lineages were associated with phylogenetically distinct wild birds. However, in the farm environment, phylogenetically distant host animals shared several C. jejuni lineages that could not be segregated according to host origin using these analyses. Furthermore, of the introgressed C. jejuni alleles found in C. coli lineages, 73% were attributed to genotypes associated with food animals. Our results are consistent with an evolutionary scenario where distinct Campylobacter lineages are associated with different host species but the ecological factors that maintain this are different in domestic animals such that phylogenetically distant animals can harbour closely related strains.  相似文献

Impacts of ozone on forests: a European perspective   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:8  
In comparison with the effects of extended drought periods or severe nutrient stress, those of ozone are generally much milder, at least with respect to growth. However, there is substantial evidence from experiments, in the main using young saplings, that O3 does impose a stress on forest trees under European conditions. Decreased chlorophyll contents and photosynthetic rates, changes in carbon allocation, increased antioxidant activity, and reductions in biomass due to O3 have often been recorded, particularly in fast-growing species. Furthermore, 3 appears to weaken the trees' resilience to a range of biotic and abiotic stresses. Interactions between O3 and climatic stress, in particular drought and frost hardiness, are likely to result in potentially detrimental effects.
A link between the occurrence of O3 and forest damage is not unequivocally established in Europe, and the problem remains of extrapolating and/or scaling up from studies on seedlings to predict responses to O3 of mature trees and forest stands, because we know so little about acclimation to O3. An accurate assessment is also lacking of the magnitude of the O3 effect on European trees both in terms of the forest areas affected and its extent. In this review we suggest that C allocation is the key factor underlying the responses of trees to O3. Stomata also play a key role, since the acquisition of C must be achieved while an effective control over water consumption is retained.  相似文献

CYCLIC 3′5′-adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) regulates many physiological phenomena1,2. Cellular morphology changes when the dibutyryl derivative of cyclic AMP is added in vitro to the nutrient media of cultured mammalian cells3–6. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP has also been shown to restore controlled growth to transformed cells3, change the cell's surface architecture3,7 and induce axon formation8 with an accompanied increase in acetylcholinesterase activity9 in neuroblastoma cells growing in culture. These effects suggest that the cyclic AMP moiety may have some basic regulatory action on cell growth and cell specialization.  相似文献

The effects of 4 years of simulated nitrogen deposition, as nitrate (NO3?) and ammonium (NH4+), on microbial carbon turnover were studied in an ombrotrophic peatland. We investigated the mineralization of simple forms of carbon using MicroResp? measurements (a multiple substrate induced respiration technique) and the activities of four soil enzymes involved in the decomposition of more complex forms of carbon or in nutrient acquisition: N‐acetyl‐glucosaminidase (NAG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH), acid phosphatase (AP), and phenol oxidase (PO). The potential mineralization of labile forms of carbon was significantly enhanced at the higher N additions, especially with NH4+ amendments, while potential enzyme activities involved in breakdown of more complex forms of carbon or nutrient acquisition decreased slightly (NAG and CBH) or remained unchanged (AP and PO) with N amendments. This study also showed the importance of distinguishing between NO3? and NH4+ amendments, as their impact often differed. It is possible that the limited response on potential extracellular enzyme activity is due to other factors, such as limited exposure to the added N in the deeper soil or continued suboptimal functioning of the enzymes due to the low pH, possibly via the inhibitory effect of low phenol oxidase activity.  相似文献
