Medical skills should be developed by the staffs of smaller hospitals for the differential study of patients with symptoms resembling those of poliomyelitis in order to provide the rudiments of care for the occasional patient with mild poliomyelitis, to recognize the indications which point to the necessity of superior technical assistance, and to decide when it is appropriate to move patients to better equipped centers. The impetuous acquisition of mechanical aids for the treatment of special problems will be effective in small communities only to the extent that this equipment is kept serviceable and is operated by persons of sufficient skill. Epidemic situations in a small community can be met only by mobilization of facilities under adequate direction and by integration of care with that provided by larger treatment centers.  相似文献

Five microsatellite loci are described for the commercially exploited marine gastropod, Buccinum undatum. Levels of polymorphism were variable with three to 19 alleles per locus and expected heterozygosities of 0.26–0.94 in 60 individuals of the population from which the loci were isolated. Homozygote excess at two of the loci might be attributable to null alleles, and these loci should not be used in, for example, parentage analysis. Nevertheless, because null allele frequencies can be estimated and their effects partitioned, all are useful markers for studies of population differentiation.  相似文献

Brood reduction is common in a population of Blue-eyed Shags on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. This paper describes possible adaptations which may reduce the brood. In clutches of three, the last egg was smaller, and hatched 2.4 days later than its siblings. Whilst 78–84% of first and second ('A' & 'B') chicks fledged, only 11 % of 'C' chicks did. In a sample of artificially synchronized broods chick survival was as high as in normal asynchronously hatching broods, but there were more cases of total brood loss. The age at which the C chick died was related inversely to the length of the A-C hatching interval. Relative differences in sibling weights were highest during the first 12 days, when most of the C chick deaths occurred. At this age the daily food requirements of each brood of three was one-tenth that of each brood of two just prior to fledging. It is suggested that C chicks were unable to compete effectively for a food supply which was limited by the parents, rather than by the environment. The asymptotic weight attained by A chicks was inversely related to brood size, and was greater than that of B or C chicks. Normal asynchronous broods produced at least one heavy (A) chick and one medium weight (B) chick, whilst in synchronized broods the asymptotic weight attained was similar to that of B chicks in normal broods.  相似文献

Levels of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence divergence between species within each of several avian (Anas, Aythya, Dendroica, Melospiza, and Zonotrichia) and nonavian (Lepomis and Hyla) vertebrate genera were compared. An analysis of digestion profiles generated by 13-18 restriction endonucleases indicates little overlap in magnitude of mtDNA divergence for the avian versus nonavian taxa examined. In 55 interspecific comparisons among the avian congeners, the fraction of identical fragment lengths (F) ranged from 0.26 to 0.96 (F = 0.46), and, given certain assumptions, these translate into estimates of nucleotide sequence divergence (p) ranging from 0.007 to 0.088; in 46 comparisons among the fish and amphibian congeners, F values ranged from 0.00 to 0.36 (F = 0.09), yielding estimates of P greater than 0.070. The small mtDNA distances among avian congeners are associated with protein-electrophoretic distances (D values) less than approximately 0.2, while the mtDNA distances among assayed fish and amphibian congeners are associated with D values usually greater than 0.4. Since the conservative pattern of protein differentiation previously reported for many avian versus nonavian taxa now appears to be paralleled by a conservative pattern of mtDNA divergence, it seems increasingly likely that many avian species have shared more recent common ancestors than have their nonavian taxonomic counterparts. However, estimates of avian divergence times derived from mtDNA- and protein-calibrated clocks cannot readily be reconciled with some published dates based on limited fossil remains. If the earlier paleontological interpretations are valid, then protein and mtDNA evolution must be somewhat decelerated in birds. The empirical and conceptual issues raised by these findings are highly analogous to those in the long-standing debate about rates of molecular evolution and times of separation of ancestral hominids from African apes.   相似文献

Statistical methods for computing the standard errors of the branching points of an evolutionary tree are developed. These methods are for the unweighted pair-group method-determined (UPGMA) trees reconstructed from molecular data such as amino acid sequences, nucleotide sequences, restriction-sites data, and electrophoretic distances. They were applied to data for the human, chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and gibbon species. Among the four different sets of data used, DNA sequences for an 895-nucleotide segment of mitochondrial DNA (Brown et al. 1982) gave the most reliable tree, whereas electrophoretic data (Bruce and Ayala 1979) gave the least reliable one. The DNA sequence data suggested that the chimpanzee is the closest and that the gorilla is the next closest to the human species. The orangutan and gibbon are more distantly related to man than is the gorilla. This topology of the tree is in agreement with that for the tree obtained from chromosomal studies and DNA-hybridization experiments. However, the difference between the branching point for the human and the chimpanzee species and that for the gorilla species and the human-chimpanzee group is not statistically significant. In addition to this analysis, various factors that affect the accuracy of an estimated tree are discussed.   相似文献

A method for assessing the adhesion of settled zoospores ofEnteromorpha intestinalis is described. Using this method, the effect of certain enzymes on the attachmentprocess has been studied and the biochemical nature of the secretedadhesive inferred from the results. Although considerable variation in adhesive ability has beenshown to exist between spores from different parent sourcescertain enzymes produce a consistent weakening action on adhesion.Trypsin, pronase, and a-amylase are especially active in thisrespect. The experimental results demonstrate that the -amylaseeffect, although not quite so great as that of the two proteolyticenzymes is, however, genuine. In conjunction with the previous paper it has been shown thatadhesive production is a rapid process, completed within minutesof initial contact and that at this early stage the adhesivematerial is particularly susceptible to proteolytic attack. The results offer the possibility of a biological method forthe control of algal fouling.  相似文献
