Abstract: Many aquatic species in the arid southwestern United States are imperiled, persisting primarily in isolated, low-order streams that are increasingly vulnerable to stochastic disturbances. During 2003 and 2004, we surveyed 39 mountain canyons in southeastern Arizona, USA, for lowland leopard frogs (Rana yavapaiensis), a species that has declined in abundance and distribution across its range in the United States. We quantified habitat features at 2 spatial scales, canyon and pool, to identify features that distinguished sites inhabited by frogs from those uninhabited by frogs. Canyons inhabited by frogs had watersheds that averaged 8.1 km2 larger (SE = 2.52), pools that averaged 37.8 m3 greater (9.30) in volume, gradients that averaged 4.1% (1.40%) less steep, and locations that averaged 3.2 km closer (1.06) to the nearest valley stream than did uninhabited canyons. Plunge pools inhabited by frogs averaged 13.5% (5.66%) more perimeter vegetation, 11.2% (5.34%) more canopy cover, and 1.9 (0.60) more refuges than uninhabited pools. In general, canyons that provided more perennial water during dry summer months and plunge pools that provided more bank heterogeneity were more likely to be inhabited by frogs. Conservation of lowland leopard frogs and other aquatic species that inhabit xeric systems in the southwestern United States depends principally on maintaining riparian ecosystems that provide habitat for these species and the adjacent uplands that influence the structure and function of these systems. ABSTRACT For comparing impacts of bird and bat collisions with wind turbines, investigators estimate fatalities/megawatt (MW) of rated capacity/year, based on periodic carcass searches and trials used to estimate carcasses not found due to scavenger removal and searcher error. However, scavenger trials typically place ≥10 carcasses at once within small areas already supplying scavengers with carcasses deposited by wind turbines, so scavengers may be unable to process and remove all placed carcasses. To avoid scavenger swamping, which might bias fatality estimates low, we placed only 1–5 bird carcasses at a time amongst 52 wind turbines in our 249.7-ha study area, each carcass monitored by a motion-activated camera. Scavengers removed 50 of 63 carcasses, averaging 4.45 days to the first scavenging event. By 15 days, which corresponded with most of our search intervals, scavengers removed 0% and 67% of large-bodied raptors placed in winter and summer, respectively, and 15% and 71% of small birds placed in winter and summer, respectively. By 15 days, scavengers removed 42% of large raptors as compared to 15% removed in conventional trials, and scavengers removed 62% of small birds as compared to 52% removed in conventional trials. Based on our methodology, we estimated mean annual fatalities caused by 21.9 MW of wind turbines in Vasco Caves Regional Preserve (within Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area, California, USA) were 13 red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), 12 barn owls (Tyto alba), 18 burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia), 48 total raptors, and 99 total birds. Compared to fatality rates estimated from conventional scavenger trials, our estimates were nearly 3 times higher for red-tailed hawk and barn owl, 68% higher for all raptors, and 67% higher for all birds. We also found that deaths/gigawatt-hour of power generation declined quickly with increasing capacity factor among wind turbines, indicating collision hazard increased with greater intermittency in turbine operations. Fatality monitoring at wind turbines might improve by using scavenger removal trials free of scavenger swamping and by relating fatality rates to power output data in addition to rated capacity (i.e., turbine size). The resulting greater precision in mortality estimates will assist wildlife managers to assess wind farm impacts and to more accurately measure the effects of mitigation measures implemented to lessen those impacts. 相似文献

Sitona lineatus and Apion vorax were the two most common species of weevil on field beans (Vicia faba minor) at Rothamsted between 1970 and 1974. In glasshouse tests, A. vorax was a much more efficient vector than 5. lineatus of broad bean stain virus (BBSV) and Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV), and both species transmitted EAMV more often than BBSV. Five other species of Apion transmitted the viruses infrequently or not at all. S. lineatus adults transmitted no more often after 8–16 days on infected plants than after 1–2 days. Some A. vorax adults transmitted EAMV, but not BBSV, after feeding on infected leaves for a few minutes. After 4 days on infected plants, A. vorax sometimes remained infective for the following 8 days. No A. vorax collected from woodland plants in spring was infective with BBSV or EAMV, but 4% from bean crops containing seed-borne infection carried BBSV and 17% carried EAMV. BBSV and EAMV were recovered from triturated weevils, but not from weevil haemolymph. Possibly the viruses are transmitted as contaminants of the mouthparts or by regurgitation during feeding, but A. vorax was observed to regurgitate only when anaesthetized. BBSV and EAMV were not transmitted by aphids (Aphis fabae and Acyrthosiphon pisum), nor by pollen beetles {Meligethes spp.). Field observations suggest that infected seed is the main source of BBSV and EAMV in spring-sown crops, and that crops grown from virus-free seed, and isolated from infected crops by 250–500 m, remain free of infection for most of the season. 相似文献

SUMMARY. (1) The average benthic density of Peltoperla maria in an undisturbed southern Appalachian stream was more than twice that of a nearby stream draining a previously clear-cul catchment in its tenth year of natural secondary succession.
(2) Peltoperla production estimates, using three methods, do not show a significant difference in production between streams draining the two catchments. We attribute these results to quicker growth and slightly higher densities of larger nymphs in the disturbed stream. Cells from the extraembryonic endoderm of the gastrulating chick embryo contain a β-d-galactoside-binding lectin inhibited by thiodigalactoside (TDG). TDG inhibits the aggregation of freshly prepared cells. In these fresh cell suspensions, adhesion is also inhibited when purified lectin is added to the aggregation assay. If these cells are incubated at 22° C their adhesion decreases. Associated with this is an increase in lectin activity in the cell supernatants. In these incubated cells aggregation is stimulated by TDG and desialyzed fetuin. These data suggest that the lectin may have a role to play in cellular adhesion. A soluble NADH-dependent nitrate reductase is described forthe shoot system of Xanthium. Young leaves and immature stemtissues contain high levels of the enzyme. They are relativelyrich in free amino acids and amides but store little free nitrate.The specific activity of the enzyme is lower in fully expandedleaves, although these leaves exhibit higher rates of fixationof carbon in photosynthesis than do younger leaves. Neithernitrate nor free amino acids accumulate in the mesophyll ofthe leaf. Older parts of the stem axis accumulate large amountsof soluble nitrogen, almost entirely as free nitrate. Reservesof nitrate in the shoot and root are rapidly depleted if nitrateis removed from the external medium. Nitrate reductase is apparently absent from roots of Xanthium.This finding is supported by analyses of bleeding sap from nitrate-fedplants which show that 95 per cent of the nitrogen exportedfrom roots is present as free nitrate. However, roots are capableof synthesizing and exporting large amounts of amino nitrogenif supplied with reduced nitrogen such as urea or ammonium.
