This study assessed the feeding strategies of nine fish species in their native (Cuiabá River) and in an invaded basin (upper Paraná River) to identify trophic variables that may explain the success of these species in the new basin, over 30 years. The following predictions were analyzed: (i) species that display omnivorous or piscivorous diets in the native basin are favored in the invasion process over the long term, and (ii) specialist feeders are favored in the invasion process provided that their food items are highly available in the invaded area. These predictions were supported by the data; the species that were successful invaders had high trophic plasticity (omnivores), consumed a wide variety of food items from specific trophic guilds (piscivores), or if a species had a specialized diet, the resources demanded are abundant (detritivores). Thus, in a long-term perspective, the food resources used by these species are rarely limiting in aquatic ecosystems, and these feeding characteristics should be one of the key factors determining the colonization success of fishes. Understanding the factors that determine the success of invasive species in new areas is critical for developing management policies aimed at minimizing the impacts of biological invasions.  相似文献

The non-native peacock bass (Cichla kelberi) is causing freshwater fish extinctions in the tropical regions around the world, but there are very few studies on its interaction with native species. This study, based on a mesocosm experiment, examined direct and indirect effects of a non-native peacock bass on the native prey in Paraná River, Brazil, and tested whether these effects were mitigated by aquatic vegetation. Feeding activity of most prey was unaffected by the presence of peacock bass. All prey were consumed in the absence of vegetation; whereas a marginally significant decrease in mortality was observed in the vegetated habitats. Overall, peacock bass had minor indirect effects on prey foraging, but very significant direct effects on prey survival. As aquatic plants provide very limited protection to native prey, vegetated habitats are unlikely to slow down the decline in biodiversity resulting from this invasive species and conservation measures may need to consider other ways to ensure survival of the source populations.  相似文献

Biological effects of angiotensin II (AngII) such as regulation of AngII target genes may be triggered by interaction of AngII with intracellular AngII receptor types 1 and 2 (AT1 and AT2), defined as intracrine response. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of AT1 and AT2 receptors in nuclear membrane of human mesangial cells (HMCs) and evaluate the possible biological effects mediated by intracellular AT1 through an intracrine mechanism. Subcellular distribution of AT1 and AT2 was evaluated by immunofluorescence and by western blot in isolated nuclear extract. Endogenous intracellular synthesis of AngII was stimulated by high glucose (HG). Effects of HG were analyzed in the presence of candesartan, which prevents AngII internalization. Both receptors were found in nuclear membrane. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled AngII added to isolated nuclei produced a fluorescence that was reduced in the presence of losartan or PD-123319 and quenched in the presence of both inhibitors simultaneously. HG induced overexpression of fibronectin and increased cell proliferation in the presence of candesartan, indicating an intracrine action of AngII induced by HG. Results showed the presence of nuclear receptors in HMCs that can be activated by AngII through an intracrine response independent of cytoplasmic membrane AngII receptors.

Synopsis In this study the diets of five species of bottom-feeding fishes (Prochilodus lineatus, Steindachnerina insculpta, Loricariichthys platymetopon, Trachydoras paraguayensis and Iheringichthys labrosus) were analyzed. Samples were taken in the High Paraná River basin and its floodplain from August 1987 to July 1988 and in February, August and September 1991. The results demonstrated that P. lineatus and S. insculpta were ileophagous, L. platymetopon was detritivorous and I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis were benthophagous. The feeding activity was higher during the flood period for P. lineatus and in dry season for T. paraguayensis. P. lineatus and S. insculpta fed mainly during the day, while I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis during the day and dusk, respectively.  相似文献
