We propose a simple model for genetic adaptation to a changing environment, describing a fitness landscape characterized by two maxima. One is associated with “specialist” individuals that are adapted to the environment; this maximum moves over time as the environment changes. The other maximum is static, and represents “generalist” individuals not affected by environmental changes. The rest of the landscape is occupied by “maladapted” individuals. Our analysis considers the evolution of these three subpopulations. Our main result is that, in presence of a sufficiently stable environmental feature, as in the case of an unchanging aspect of a physical habitat, specialists can dominate the population. By contrast, rapidly changing environmental features, such as language or cultural habits, are a moving target for the genes; here, generalists dominate, because the best evolutionary strategy is to adopt neutral alleles not specialized for any specific environment. The model we propose is based on simple assumptions about evolutionary dynamics and describes all possible scenarios in a non-trivial phase diagram. The approach provides a general framework to address such fundamental issues as the Baldwin effect, the biological basis for language, or the ecological consequences of a rapid climate change.  相似文献

RNA-dependent DNA polymerases from Rous-associated virus-O and avian myeloblastosis virus were partially purified by affinity chromatography and compared to each other. The enzymes are indistinguishable in the immunoglobulin inhibition test and by several enzymological criteria, such as optimum curves for the concentrations of Mg2+, K+, H+; monophasic Lineweaver-Burk plot for dTTP and biphasic Lineweaver-Burk plot for dGTP. In thermal inactivation studies a small difference can be observed, suggesting a minor difference in the physical structures of the enzymes. Our findings are consistent with the idea that the RNA-dpendent DNA polymerases of endogenous and exogenous avian leukosis viruses are very closely related to each other and therefore may be regarded as one group of polymerases.  相似文献

We previously reported that inhibition of ethylene biosynthesis with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) eliminated the inhibitory effect of NO3 on nodulation of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragon) plants grown aeroponically. In this work, the effect of Ag+, as an inhibitor of ethylene action, has been studied in plants growing aeroponically or in darkened tubes with vermiculite, and low-nitrate or high-nitrate solution. Vermiculite-grown plants developed up to 3 times as many nodules as did those growing aeroponically. Nodule formation was mirrored by dry-matter accumulation. High (10 mol m–3) NO3 applied from planting inhibited nodulation to an equal extent (c. 50%) in the two growth conditions. In contrast, Ag+ treatment increased nodule formation at all NO3 concentrations assayed under the two growth conditions, with the stimulation being higher in plants grown aeroponically. Finally, no effect of Ag+ (10 mmol m–3) on plant growth was observed in either of the growth conditions. The effectiveness of NO3 as a nodulation inhibitor and enhancer of ethylene biosynthesis in roots of alfalfa was also studied. Within 24 h after inoculation, 10 mol m–3 NO3 exerted most of its inhibitory effect on nodulation. At the same time, both 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase activity and ethylene evolution rates markedly increased in inoculated and uninoculated alfalfa roots treated with NO3. Support for a role of endogenous ethylene in the control of nodule formation in legumes is discussed.  相似文献

Bacterial non-homologous end joining requires the ligase, LigD and Ku. Ku finds the break site, recruits LigD, and then assists LigD to seal the phosphodiester backbone. Bacterial Ku contains a core domain conserved with eukaryotes but has a unique C-terminus that can be divided into a minimal C-terminal region that is conserved and an extended C-terminal region that varies in sequence and length between species. Here, we examine the role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Ku C-terminal variants, where we removed either the extended or entire C-terminus to investigate the effects on Ku–DNA binding, rates of Ku-stimulated ligation, and binding affinity of a direct Ku–LigD interaction. We find that the extended C-terminus limits DNA binding and identify key amino acids that contribute to this effect through alanine-scanning mutagenesis. The minimal C-terminus is sufficient to stimulate ligation of double-stranded DNA, but the Ku core domain also contributes to stimulating ligation. We further show that wildtype Ku and the Ku core domain alone directly bind both ligase and polymerase domains of LigD. Our results suggest that Ku-stimulated ligation involves direct interactions between the Ku core domain and the LigD ligase domain, in addition to the extended Ku C-terminus and the LigD polymerase domain.  相似文献

Wheat is the most important cereal grown in the European Union and Spain is its fifth largest wheat producer. There is little information about Fusarium species associated with wheat in Spain. Phylogenetic diversity of 51 strains belonging to Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex (FIESC) isolated from Spanish wheat was investigated using partial sequences of the translation elongation factor gene (EF-1α). Maximum-parsimony and Bayesian analysis of aligned DNA sequences resolved 18 haplotypes and 7 phylogenetic species. Strains morphologically identified as F. equiseti belonged to two different phylogenetic species, FIESC-5 and FIESC-14. Some correlation between phylogenetic species and geographical region was found. The present results highlight the potential contribution of FIESC to the mycotoxin contamination of Spanish wheat.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that plasma CoQ(10) levels decrease in patients with advanced chronic heart failure (CHF). OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether oral CoQ(10) supplementation could improve cardiocirculatory efficiency in patients with CHF. METHODS: We studied 21 patients in NYHA class II and III (18M, 3W, mean age 59 +/- 9 years) with stable CHF secondary to ischemic heart disease (ejection fraction 37 +/- 7%), using a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design. Patients were assigned to oral CoQ(10) (100 mg tid) and to placebo for 4 weeks, respectively. RESULTS: CoQ(10) supplementation resulted in a threefold increase in plasma CoQ(10) level (P < 0.0001 vs placebo). Systolic wall thickening score index (SWTI) was improved both at rest and peak dobutamine stress echo after CoQ(10) supplementation (+12.1 and 15.6%, respectively, P < 0.05 vs placebo). Left ventricular ejection fraction improved significantly also at peak dobutamine (15% from study entry P < 0.0001) in relation to a decrease in LV end-systolic volume index (from 57 +/- 7 mL/m(2) to 45 mL/m(2), P < 0.001). Improvement in the contractile response was more evident among initially akinetic (+33%) and hypokinetic (+25%) segments than dyskinetic ones (+6%). Improvement in SWTI was correlated with changes in plasma CoQ(10) levels (r = -0.52, P < 0.005). Peak VO(2) was also improved after CoQ(10) as compared with placebo (+13%, <0.005). No side effects were reported with CoQ(10). CONCLUSIONS: Oral CoQ(10) improves LV contractility in CHF without any side effects. This improvement is associated with an enhanced functional capacity.  相似文献

The synthesis of new substituted prolines carrying at C-4 a second α-amino acid residue is reported. The amino acid, l-cysteine or l-selenocysteine, is linked to the proline ring through the sulfur or the selenium atom, respectively. The products were prepared with different stereochemistry at C-4, in few and clean high-yielding steps, with suitable protections for solid phase applications. The introduction of both sulfur and selenium atoms at C-4 of the proline ring seems to enhance significantly the cis geometry at the prolyl amide bond.  相似文献

Experimental dermatophytoses were tested in guinea pigs by 17 strains of genus Epidermophyton. Only three strains of E. floccosum produced lesions. These lesions were detected 5–7 d after inoculation, and no crust formation or alopecia was observed. These lesions were also studied using microbiological and histopathological techniques. No infection occurred after cutaneous application of E. floccosum var. nigricans and E. stockdaleae.  相似文献
