1. Studies assessing human impacts on freshwater ecosystems are typically based on a single taxonomic group, often macroinvertebrates or fish. Unfortunately, the degree to which such macroinvertebrate or fish‐based surveys can be generalised across other taxonomic groups remains largely unknown. A prerequisite for useful generalisations is that different taxonomic groups exhibit concordant patterns of community structure across sites. 2. We examined the concordance among fish, benthic macroinvertebrates and bryophytes in 32 streams in a boreal catchment in Finland. Our goal was to test how consistently different taxonomic groups classify stream sites; for example, can site groupings based on macroinvertebrates be used as a surrogate for bryophyte or fish assemblage classification? 3. Our results show that community classifications in headwater streams are not concordant across taxonomic groups, at least not at the within‐river system scale. The lack of concordance reflected the fact that all three groups responded to different environmental factors. Macroinvertebrate community structure was mainly correlated with stream size and pH, whereas bryophytes were related to water colour, nutrient content and in‐stream habitat variability. Fish community structure was best described by stream depth, substrate size and water oxygen concentration. 4. Our results suggest that great care should be taken when typologies based on benthic macroinvertebrates, or any other taxonomic group, are extrapolated to other groups in creating typologies of lotic environments.  相似文献

Previous studies on the effects of the mobile phone electromagnetic field (EMF) on various event‐related potential (ERP) components have yielded inconsistent and even contradictory results, and often failed in replication. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an auditory ERP component elicited by infrequent (deviant) stimuli differing in some physical features from the repetitive frequent (standard) stimuli in a sound sequence. The MMN provides a sensitive measure for cortical auditory stimulus feature discrimination, regardless of attention and other contaminating factors. In this study, MMN responses to duration, intensity, frequency, and gap changes were recorded in healthy young adults (n = 17), using a multifeature paradigm including several types of auditory change in the same stimulus sequence, while a GSM mobile phone was placed on either ear with the EMF (902 MHz pulsed at 217 Hz; SAR1g = 1.14 W/kg, SAR10g = 0.82 W/kg, peak value = 1.21 W/kg, measured with an SAM phantom) on or off. An MMN was elicited by all deviant types, while its amplitude and latency showed no significant differences due to EMF exposure for any deviant types. In the present study, we found no conclusive evidence that acute exposure to GSM mobile phone EMF affects cortical auditory change detection processing reflected by the MMN. The needle trace method was used to study retrospectively the long-term latitudinal variation in needle retention in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Finland. The mean annual summer needle retention (ANR) along the main stem varied from 3.4 to 6.0 needle sets during the period 1957–1991. The lowest values were observed in southern and the highest in northern Finland. The length of the growing season, expressed as the thermal sum (threshold value +5 °C), was negatively correlated with the mean ANR (r=-0.96). The geographical needle retention pattern (NRP) for the period 1957–1991 showed a clearly increasing trend from 1957 to 1969 (southern Finland) and to 1975 (northern Finland); thereafter, the NRP tended to decrease close to its minimum value recorded in 1991. The general level of the NRP was approximately 5.0 needle sets in northern Finland and 3.5–4.0 needle sets in southern Finland. The NRP, with its 6–12 year cycle for southern Finland, was clearly periodical. Differences in the NRP among the ten stands in southern Finland were small, whereas the said periodicity was missing and the differences were high among the stands in northern Finland. The results indicate that variation in the number of needle sets, viz. defoliation of pines, is a normal phenomenon. The role of net carbon assimilation as a regulator of the number of needle sets is discussed.  相似文献

We constructed a bioprocess environment enabling automatic sampling from a bioreactor combined with a compact on-line high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) unit. This setup allowed us to measure extracellular glucose, ethanol, glycerol, and acetate concentrations automatically at 5 min intervals during the cultivation. This environment also provides mechanical measurement of the optical density (OD) of cells and enables us to collect and store (−35°C) samples for further off-line analyses. Among the available devices, the performance of the sampling-analysis unit is by far the best with regard to speed and number of analytes. Both the sampling and analysis phases are easily controlled by software; thus, providing a unique environment to perform various bioprocess activity tasks, whether they would be cell line screening or optimisation of conditions for growth and productivity. Complex research set-ups can be created and continuous automated measurements empower long-term cultivations with a time series. We provide evidence for the applicability of this environment by performing three comparable batch cultivations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast and show that both the on-line sampling and analysis modes produce reliable data for further use in the monitoring and controlling of bioprocesses. On-line data provided new insight into the dynamics of the diauxic shift during aerobic glucose batch cultivation. When cell growth and carbon dioxide production ceased for the first time during the diauxic shift, acetate accumulation and consumption of the remaining glucose below 0.15 g/L continued to occur for 1 h. At the same time, glycerol and ethanol began to be consumed. Samples were also collected during cultivation for later analysis of intracellular metabolites and to collect more valuable information about metabolism.  相似文献

A basic fraction with pl values of 10.0–10.4 was isolated from macrophage culture medium. This fraction stimulated the production of collagen into fibroblast culture medium but inhibited the production of other proteins. Both changes were strongly dependent on the concentration of the factor. As revealed by SDS-PAGE the production of type I collagen was especially stimulated. The specific enhancement of fibroblast collagen production was also observed in the presence of serum proteins. The collagen synthesis enhancing macrophage-derived factor preparation (CEMF) contained three proteins, one major (Mr 23 kD) and two minor (Mr 49 and 71 kD) fractions in SDS-PAGE. When prelabeled fibroblast medium was exposed to CEMF a protein with Mr of 350 kD or greater was converted to a smaller size. This change was inhibited by EDTA but not by serum proteinase inhibitors.  相似文献

Impedance Spectroscopy in Frost Hardiness Evaluation of Rhododendron Leaves   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Impedance spectroscopy was used in studying frost hardinessof leaves of two diploid rhododendron cultivars, RhododendronL. ‘PJM’ and R. ‘Cunningham's White’,and their tetraploid derivatives, R. ‘Northern Starburst’(NSB) and CW4. After the growing season and initial hardeningin a greenhouse, plants were subjected to an acclimation regimein a phytotron: 3 consecutive weeks at +5, +1 and -2°C each.Hardiness was studied with controlled freezing tests beforeeach decrease in temperature and at the end of the experiment,based on data of extracellular resistance reand relaxation time of the frost-exposed leaves. The correlation of the two estimateswas 0.92. Generally, the diploid clones had better frost hardinessthan the tetraploid clones. At the end of the experiment, frosthardiness of the diploid ‘PJM’ was -28.7°C andthat of the tetraploid NSB -20.6°C. Leaves of the diploid‘Cunningham's White’ and of the tetraploid CW4 hardenedto -32.0°C and -20.9°C, respectively. Frost hardinessestimated by impedance spectroscopy correlated well with earlierresults based on visual scoring (r = 0.81–0.86) and electrolyteleakage tests (r = 0.84–0.90), but results from impedancespectroscopy indicated weaker hardiness than the other tests.The difference between the results from impedance spectroscopyand the other tests was smaller and more coherent within the‘Cunningham's White’ clones than within ‘PJM’and NSB.
