Mytilus chilensis is an invertebrate that competes for space with the alga Gracilaria chilensis in farmed areas in Chile and, for this reason, is considered a contaminant organism. Mussel beds are considered to play a role in the regeneration of nitrogen and, as a consequence, they could be an important source of ammonium for the algae. In this study, we manipulated the mussel cover in experimental plots, creating replicated areas with 0%, 30% and 60% coverage. In half of the plots the mussels were killed with a gas torch so their effect would be mechanical, without nutrient regeneration. After 15 days, each plot was planted with 12 G. chilensis bundles (100 g each) per square meter. Ammonium concentrations increased significantly in the waters around the mussel bed in contrast to areas without mussels or dead mussels. Mussel cover had a significant negative effect on the length of the G. chilensis bundles planted in the experimental plots. However, no significant differences were detected between experimental quadrats with live mussels and those with dead mussels during a 5 month period. These results indicate that the mechanical effect of the mussel can, to some extent, be responsible for the decline in G. chilensis abundance in farms where mussel beds have been established.  相似文献

Cultivation of Gracilaria on the sea-bottom in southern Chile: a review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This review contains information about the cultivation techniques, strategies, problems and new challenges faced as well as an economic analysis of the income-producing capacity of Gracilaria farming, considering the variability of environmental systems where this alga is cultivated in southern Chile. The development of Gracilaria farming in Chile was made possible by an increased market demand, as well as the existence of basic knowledge that permitted the management of wild stocks and the initiation of cultivation practices. Subtidal cultivation systems appear to be more productive than intertidal systems and are less susceptible to wave action than intertidal cultivation areas. In relation to farming practices, this difference implies that planting and harvesting methods and strategies vary between habitats where cultivation is being carried out on a commercial scale. Several problems such as the environmental impact of different cultivation methods adopted by the farmers, the management of contaminating organisms and strain selection appear to be important and new areas for future research. Finally, an analysis of the income-producing capacity indicates that environmental differences also have important consequences for the management strategies of Gracilaria cultivation.  相似文献

Background

L-methionine, the principal sulfur-containing amino acid in proteins, plays critical roles in cell physiology as an antioxidant and in the breakdown of fats and heavy metals. Previous studies suggesting the use of L-methionine as a treatment for depression and other diseases indicate that it might also improve memory and propose a role in brain function. However, some evidence indicates that an excess of methionine can be harmful and can increase the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes, heart diseases, certain types of cancer, brain alterations such as schizophrenia, and memory impairment.

Results

Here, we report the effects of an L-methionine-enriched diet in wild-type mice and emphasize changes in brain structure and function. The animals in our studypresented 1) higher levels of phosphorylated tau protein, 2) increased levels of amyloid-β (Aβ)-peptides, including the formation of Aβ oligomers, 3) increased levels of inflammatory response,4) increased oxidative stress, 5) decreased level of synaptic proteins, and 6) memory impairment and loss. We also observed dysfunction of the Wnt signaling pathway.

Conclusion

Taken together, the results of our study indicate that an L-methionine-enriched diet causes neurotoxic effects in vivo and might contribute to the appearance of Alzheimer’s-like neurodegeneration.

Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (formely Phaffia rhodozyma) is a basidiomycetous yeast-like fungus that produces carotenoids useful for the food industry. Recently, its sexual cycle was reported but little is known about its genetic constitution. To inquire into the ploidy state of X. dendrorhous, biased mutant spectrum, genetic complementation and mitotic recombination analysis were used. A wild-type strain was subjected to N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine mutagenic treatment. Auxotrophic and carotene mutants were forced to revert to the wild-type phenotype. Pigment producing and prototroph revertants behaved as diploid except for adenine less mutants. These results are in agreement with the limited spectrum of auxotrophs obtained in this strain for the ADE1 locus. To analyze the genetic characteristic of the adenine genetic marker of X. dendrorhous, protoplast fusion experiments with several adenine less mutants were performed. The experiments presented in this work suggest that the ATCC 2430 (UDC 67-385) strain of X. dendrorhous is diploid and a heterozygous constitution is proposed for the ADE1 locus. The steroidogenic capacity and oxidative stress-related parameters of the human corpus luteum (CL) at different stages of the luteal phase were studied under basal and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-stimulated conditions. Mid CL exhibited the maximal steroidogenic capacity, together with lower levels of glutathione and higher thiobarbituric acid reactants content, macrophage count, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, compared to the late CL. Addition of hCG to luteal cell cultures led to a preferential increase in progesterone synthesis in the late CL compared to the mid CL, without changes in the oxidative stress-related parameters, except for the increased SOD activity found in the late CL. It is concluded that an oxidative stress condition is established in the mid CL, coinciding with the maximal steroidogenic capacity and macrophage infiltration of the organ, which be of relevance as one of the major mechanisms initiating CL involution in the human.  相似文献

Phloem sap was collected from white lupin (Lupinus albus L.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) and analysed for gibberellins (GAs) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A large number of GAs were found in the phloem exudate of all three species, particularly where the sap was collected from pods (white lupin and cowpea) and in these legumes GAs representing both the early C-13-hydroxylation and non-hydroxylation pathways of biosynthesis were identified. In the sap collected from the vegetative tissues of castor bean the number of GAs identified was fewer than that in the other species, representing mainly the non-hydroxylation pathway. Data from sap collected from the pedicel and stylar ends of pods and by making feeds of radiolabelled GAs to seeds in situ in white lupin indicate that the GAs present in the phloem are derived mainly from the vegetative tissues of the plant. No evidence for metabolism of GAs in the phloem could be found.  相似文献

Prunus persica has been proposed as a genomic model for deciduous trees and the Rosaceae family. Optimized protocols for RNA isolation are necessary to further advance studies in this model species such that functional genomics analyses may be performed. Here we present an optimized protocol to rapidly and efficiently purify high quality total RNA from peach fruits (Prunus persica). Isolating high-quality RNA from fruit tissue is often difficult due to large quantities of polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds that accumulate in this tissue and co-purify with the RNA. Here we demonstrate that a modified version of the method used to isolate RNA from pine trees and the woody plant Cinnamomun tenuipilum is ideal for isolating high quality RNA from the fruits of Prunus persica. This RNA may be used for many functional genomic based experiments such as RT-PCR and the construction of large-insert cDNA libraries.  相似文献

BackgroundCervical cancer is a public health problem in Latin America. Radiotherapy plays a fundamental role both as definitive or adjuvant treatment. There are important intra and inter-country differences regarding access and availability of radiotherapy facilities in this region. The aim of a study was to standardize the basic clinical and technical criteria for the radiation treatment of patients with CC in Chile and provide a guide for Latin American Radiation Oncologists.Materials and methodsForty-one expert radiation oncologists from the Chilean Radiation Oncology Society made a consensus using the Delphi methodology.ResultsThere was a high degree of agreement for each of the recommendations. Those with the lowest percentage were related to the definition of the conformal 3D technique as the standard for definitive external radiotherapy (81%) and the criteria for extended nodal irradiation (85%).ConclusionsThese recommendations present an updated guide for radiotherapy treatment of patients with cervical cancer for Latin America. Those should be implemented according to local resources of each institution.  相似文献
