Psychological factors and self-reports of muscle pain   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Factorial analyses of subjectively felt health complaints in a population of 400 males and 74 females revealed nine orthogonal (independent) factors. One factor (Factor 4) involved pain in the neck, pain in the back, pain in arms and shoulders, and migraine. This type of complaint did not relate to anxiety and depression. The prevalence of muscle pains varied between the sexes, and the types of occupations. Shiftwork was also important. 54% of the women and 40% of the men in the total population had some forms of muscle pain, but only 8% of the women and 3% of the men felt this to be a really serious problem. Psychological factors explained only moderate amounts of variance of muscle pain when the population was taken as a whole. However, within each type of occupation, psychological factors explained a considerable amount of the variance.  相似文献

The developmental regulation of the translational elongation factor EF-1 alpha has been analyzed in tobacco. A gene fusion was constructed consisting of the 5' and 3' regions of the tomato genomic clone LeEF-A from the EF-1 alpha gene family and the beta-glucuronidase coding region. Analysis of the transgenic plants containing this chimeric gene demonstrated that the tomato LeEF-A flanking sequences were sufficient to confer expression patterns similar to those of the endogenous tobacco EF-1 alpha gene. The patterns of beta-glucuronidase activity in this system indicated that during plant growth and development EF-1 alpha is regulated with increased expression corresponding to regions of high protein synthesis, including meristems, rapidly growing tissues, and developing gametophytes. In addition, EF-1 alpha expression responds rapidly to changes in growth patterns induced by hormone treatment. Our results are in agreement with studies in animals indicating that EF-1 alpha expression may be rate limiting for protein synthesis and demonstrate that the analysis of EF-1 alpha is of value for studying interrelationships between protein synthesis and developmental control.  相似文献

The key enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle, isocitrate lyase and malate synthase, were present in cell-free extracts of the phototrophic, green, thermophilic bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus grown with acetate as the sole organic carbon source.The optimum temperature of these enzymes was 40° C, and their specific activities were high enough to account for the observed growth rate. Lower levels of the enzymes were found in extracts from cells grown on a complete medium.Itaconate was shown to inhibit isocitrate lyase from C. aurantiacus 96% at a concentration of 0.25 mM and also had a profound effect on the growth of the organism on acetate, 0.25 mM inhibiting completely. Itaconate also inhibited the growth when added to the complex medium, but in this case much higher concentrations were required.  相似文献

1. Cell-free extracts of the photosynthetic bacterium Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum, strains 8327 and Tassajara, were assayed for ribulose 1,5-diphosphate (RuDP) carboxylase and phosphoribulokinase-the two enzymes peculiar to the reductive pentose phosphate cycle. 2. RuDP carboxylase was consistently absent in strain 8327. The Tassajara strain showed a low RuDP-dependent CO2 fixation activity that was somewhat higher in cells following transatlantic air shipment than in freshly grown cells. The stability and behaviour of this activity in sucrose density gradients were similar to those described by other workers. 3. The radioactive carboxylation products formed in the presence of RuDP by enzyme preparations from the Tassajara strain did not include 3-phosphoglycerate-the known product of the RuDP carboxylase reaction, but instead consisted of the unrelated acids glutamate, aspartate and malate. 4. Phosphoribulokinase was absent in all preparations of the two Chlorobium strains tested. By contrast, phosphoribulokinase as well as RuDP carboxylase were readily demonstrated in preparations from pea chloroplasts and the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. 5. It is concluded that C. thiosulfatophilum appears to lack RuDP carboxylase, phosphoribulokinase, and hence, the reductive pentose phosphate cycle.Support of a J. S. The movement patterns of three commercially important wrasse (Labridae) species inside a small marine protected area (~ 0.15 km2) on the west coast of Norway were analysed over a period of 21 months. The mean distance between capture and recapture locations varied between 10 and 187 m, and was species and season specific. The extent of movement was not related to body size or sex. These results imply that a network of small strategically located marine protected areas can be used as management tools to protect wrasses from size- and sex-selective fishing mortality.  相似文献

Quantitative PCR diagnostic platforms are moving towards increased sample throughput, with instruments capable of carrying out thousands of reactions at once already in use. The need for a computational tool to reliably assist in the validation of the results is therefore compelling. In the present study, 328 residual clinical samples provided by the Public Health England at Addenbrooke''s Hospital (Cambridge, UK) were processed by TaqMan Array Card assay, generating 15 744 reactions from 54 targets. The amplification data were analysed by the conventional cycle-threshold (CT) method and an improvement of the maxRatio (MR) algorithm developed to filter out the reactions with irregular amplification profiles. The reactions were also independently validated by three raters and a consensus was generated from their classification. The inter-rater agreement by Fleiss'' kappa was 0.885; the agreement between either CT or MR with the raters gave Fleiss'' kappa 0.884 and 0.902, respectively. Based on the consensus classification, the CT and MR methods achieved an assay accuracy of 0.979 and 0.987, respectively. These results suggested that the assumption-free MR algorithm was more reliable than the CT method, with clear advantages for the diagnostic settings.  相似文献

Transgenic tomato plants expressing wild-type or mutated BV1 or BC1 movement proteins from Bean dwarf mosaic virus (BDMV) were generated and examined for phenotypic effects and resistance to Tomato mottle virus (ToMoV). Fewer transgenic plants were recovered with the wild-type or mutated BC1 genes, compared with the wild-type or mutated BV1 genes. Transgenic tomato plants expressing the wild-type or mutated BV1 proteins appeared normal. Interestingly, although BDMV induces only a symptomless infection in tomato (i.e., BDMV is not well adapted to tomato), transgenic tomato plants expressing the BDMV BC1 protein showed a viral disease-like phenotype (i.e., stunted growth, and leaf mottling, curling, and distortion). This suggests that the symptomless phenotype of BDMV in tomato is not due to a host-specific defect in the BC1 protein. One transgenic line expressing the BC1 gene did not show the viral disease-like phenotype. This was associated with a deletion in the 3' region of the gene, which resulted in expression of a truncated BC1 protein. Several R0 plants, expressing either wild-type or mutated BV1 or BC1 proteins, showed a significant delay in ToMoV infection, compared with non-transformed plants. R1 progeny plants also showed a significant delay in ToMoV infection, but this delay was less than that in the R0 parents. These results also demonstrate that expression of viral movement proteins, in transgenic plants, can have deleterious effects on various aspects of plant development.  相似文献

Viruses with icosahedral capsids, which form the largest class of all viruses and contain a number of important human pathogens, can be modelled via suitable icosahedrally invariant finite subsets of icosahedral 3D quasicrystals. We combine concepts from the theory of 3D quasicrystals, and from the theory of structural phase transformations in crystalline solids, to give a framework for the study of the structural transitions occurring in icosahedral viral capsids during maturation or infection. As 3D quasicrystals are in a one-to-one correspondence with suitable subsets of 6D icosahedral Bravais lattices, we study systematically the 6D-analogs of the classical Bain deformations in 3D, characterized by minimal symmetry loss at intermediate configurations, and use this information to infer putative viral-capsid transition paths in 3D via the cut-and-project method used for the construction of quasicrystals. We apply our approach to the Cowpea Chlorotic Mottle virus (CCMV) and show that the putative transition path between the experimentally observed initial and final CCMV structures is most likely to preserve one threefold axis. Our procedure suggests a general method for the investigation and prediction of symmetry constraints on the capsids of icosahedral viruses during structural transitions, and thus provides insights into the mechanisms underlying structural transitions of these pathogens.  相似文献
