Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch in lucerne (Medicago sativa L.)taproots is the conventional method used to determine the quantityof carbohydrates allocated to regrowth. Etiolated growth froma taproot could be used to quantify total root biomass allocatedto regrowth. This study compared concentrations of non-structuralcarbohydrates, as measured by -amylase hydrolysis of starchto glucose, to concentrations of non-structural biomass, asmeasured by etiolated growth from lucerne taproots placed inan incubator and plants in situ. The concentration of starchfrom enzymatically assayed taproots was 325 g kg-1 expressedas glucose equivalents. Etiolated growth and weight loss byrespiration from plants grown in the incubator accounted for524 g of actual biomass per kg of root. There was 46·2g kg-1 of N, 3·1 of P, and 33·1 of K in the etiolatedgrowth. An 88% increase in etiolated growth dry weight was observedfrom plants in situ compared to taproots placed in the incubator.Accurate quantification on non-structural biomass should notbe limited to sampling just the taproot, but must included theentire root system. Compared to determining non-structural carbohydratesby enzymatic hydrolysis of starch, the procedure used in determiningnon-structural biomass by etiolate growth gave results in unitsrelative to the plant. There is concern among public health professionals that the current economic downturn, initiated by the financial crisis that started in 2007, could precipitate the transmission of infectious diseases while also limiting capacity for control. Although studies have reviewed the potential effects of economic downturns on overall health, to our knowledge such an analysis has yet to be done focusing on infectious diseases. We performed a systematic literature review of studies examining changes in infectious disease burden subsequent to periods of crisis. The review identified 230 studies of which 37 met our inclusion criteria. Of these, 30 found evidence of worse infectious disease outcomes during recession, often resulting from higher rates of infectious contact under poorer living circumstances, worsened access to therapy, or poorer retention in treatment. The remaining studies found either reductions in infectious disease or no significant effect. Using the paradigm of the "SIR" (susceptible-infected-recovered) model of infectious disease transmission, we examined the implications of these findings for infectious disease transmission and control. Key susceptible groups include infants and the elderly. We identified certain high-risk groups, including migrants, homeless persons, and prison populations, as particularly vulnerable conduits of epidemics during situations of economic duress. We also observed that the long-term impacts of crises on infectious disease are not inevitable: considerable evidence suggests that the magnitude of effect depends critically on budgetary responses by governments. Like other emergencies and natural disasters, preparedness for financial crises should include consideration of consequences for communicable disease control.  相似文献

Recently, interest has focused on hepatocytes’ implantation to provide end stage liver failure patients with a temporary support until spontaneous recovery or a suitable donor becomes available. To avoid cell damage and use of an immunosuppressive treatment, hepatic cells could be implanted after encapsulation in a porous biomaterial of bead or capsule shape. The aim of this study was to compare the production and the physical properties of the beads, together with some hepatic cell functions, resulting from the use of different material combinations for cell microencapsulation: alginate alone or combined with type I collagen with or without poly-L-lysine and alginate coatings. Collagen and poly-L-lysine increased the bead mechanical resistance but lowered the mass transfer kinetics of vitamin B12. Proliferation of encapsulated HepG2/C3A cells was shown to be improved in alginate-collagen beads. Finally, when the beads were subcutaneously implanted in mice, the inflammatory response was reduced in the case of alginate mixed with collagen. This in vitro and in vivo study clearly outlines, based on a systematic comparison, the necessity of compromising between material physical properties (mechanical stability and porosity) and cell behavior (viability, proliferation, functionalities) to define optima hepatic cell microencapsulation conditions before implantation.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of plastids in cortex and phloem parenchyma cells of Epifagus virginiana (L.) Bart. is described. Based upon morphology and content, several distinct plastid types appear to exist. “Tubular” complexes, lipid globules and electron dense inclusions in different arrangements appear to account for the degree of plastid variability. When results obtained with Epifagus are compared with those obtained by others for a closely related genus, a striking parallel is shown to exist.  相似文献
