Glucocorticoid hormones directly or indirectly control virtually all metabolic and physiological processes. Glucocorticoids
are also shown to act on a multitude of genes, enzyme systems, and proinflammatory factors, but for these hormones there is
no representative index of action on metabolism similar to glucose content in blood for insulin. The absence of such an index
prevents the assessment of tissue provision with these hormones under various conditions and seems to be an essential cause
of complications associated with the clinical use of glucocorticoid preparations. Considering specific features of tyrosine
metabolism and data obtained experimentally and on a clinical model (adrenalectomy in rats and substitution therapy in endocrine
disease), blood content of this amino acid seems promising as such an index. Based on comparing results of glucocorticoid
treatment in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus with changes in their blood tyrosine contents, the pharmacological
effect of glucocorticoid preparations is suggested to be mainly due to compensating a relative shortage of these hormones. 相似文献

The occurrence of hybrids between bleak, Alburnus alburnus , and chub, Leuciscus cephalus is reported from four discrete river systems in England. The hybrids are described and illustrated, and means of identification from the parent species are given. Bleak × chub hybrids appear to be moderately common and on superficial examination resemble the bleak parent species more than the chub. 相似文献

The greater part of the literature on European fishes reports the widespread occurrence of an introduced North American catfish and identifies it as Ictalurus nebulosus. Study of the literature reporting critical determinations and of specimens from Europe and Great Britain reveals the presence of two species, I nebulosus and I melas. These fishes are widely used in experimental studies, usually being obtained through aquarium-fish dealers indirectly from continental Europe. Mostly they are incorrectly identified as I nebulosus. There is reason to believe that I melas is the more commonly imported catfish in Britain; both species occur feral in mainland Europe. 相似文献

In eukaryotic cells, multiple DNA repair mechanisms respond to a wide variety of DNA lesions. Homologous recombination-dependent repair provides a pathway for dealing with DNA double-strand breaks and replication fork demise. A key step in this process is the resolution of recombination intermediates such as Holliday junctions (HJs). Recently, nucleases from yeast (Yen1) and human cells (GEN1) were identified that can resolve HJ intermediates, in a manner analogous to the E. coli HJ resolvase RuvC. Here, we have analyzed the role of Yen1 in DNA repair in S. cerevisiae, and show that while yen1Δ mutants are repair-proficient, yen1Δ mus81Δ double mutants are exquisitely sensitive to a variety of DNA-damaging agents that disturb replication fork progression. This phenotype is dependent upon RAD52, indicating that toxic recombination intermediates accumulate in the absence of Yen1 and Mus81. After MMS treatment, yen1Δ mus81Δ double mutants arrest with a G2 DNA content and unsegregated chromosomes. These findings indicate that Yen1 can act upon recombination/repair intermediates that arise in MUS81-defective cells following replication fork damage. 相似文献

Defects in cellular DNA repair processes have been linked to genome instability, heritable cancers, and premature aging syndromes. Yet defects in some repair processes manifest themselves primarily in neuronal tissues. This review focuses on studies defining the molecular defects associated with several human neurological disorders, particularly ataxia with oculomotor apraxia 1 (AOA1) and spinocerebellar ataxia with axonal neuropathy 1 (SCAN1). A picture is emerging to suggest that brain cells, due to their nonproliferative nature, may be particularly prone to the progressive accumulation of unrepaired DNA lesions. 相似文献

Cryopreservation of gametes is an important tool in assisted reproduction programs to optimise captive breeding programmes of selected felid species. In this study the vitrification was evaluated in order to cryopreserve the immature domestic cat oocytes by assessing the survival of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC), and the development competence after IVM and IVF by fresh cat epididymal sperms. From a total of 892 COC obtained from queens after ovariectomy were divided into two groups: Experiment 1 for viability evaluation (150 vitrified and 100 control COC) and Experiment 2 for assessing the developmental competence (414 vitrified and 228 control COC). The viability was evaluated by double staining with carboxyfluorescein and Trypan blue, while the developmental competence was evaluated by in vitro maturation (IVM), in vitro fertilisation (IVF) by fresh epididymal spermatozoa and in vitro culture (IVC). The vitrification was performed in OPS into sucrose medium (1 M sucrose in HSOF + 6% BSA) containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (16.5% final concentration) and ethylene glycol (EG) (16.5% final concentration) as cryoprotectants. Percentage of non-viable COC was significantly higher in Experimental 1 vs Control 1 (11% vs 54.5%; P < 0.01), while cleavage rate were significantly lower for vitrified oocytes (Experimental 2) than control 2 (18.6% vs 48.2%; P < 0.01). Blastocyst rate on day 8 was higher for control oocytes than vitrified counterparts (4.3% vs 20.6% P < 0.01). This vitrification protocol ensured a development to blastocyst stage and it is the first report of development of vitrified GV COC. 相似文献

The occurrence in the North Sea of a specimen of the white pomfret, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788), a mesopelagic fish which is native to the Indian Ocean and particularly South-east Asia and the East China Sea, is described.
