Hight performance gel permeation chromatography of proteins

Proteins in the molecular weight range of 10 000–170 000 were separated by high performance gel permeation chromatography. Silica particles with 30 nm or 50 nm pores were derivatized with glycidoxy-propyltrimethoxysilane and used as support. The proteins were eluted with 50% formic acid. A protein fraction which induces endodermal and mesodermal tissues in amphibian gastrula ectoderm was purified by this method.

In 1990 and 1994, two males of Golden Eagles were found with small lead particles in their stomachs. Both individuals died soon after they had been taken sitting on the soil in bad condition. There are some findings of dead eagles in the same area which showed no sign of having been injured. The two cases of presumed lead poisoning coincide with intense efforts to reduce the number of ChamoixRupicapra rupicapra by hunting. The bullets used contain a nucleus of lead and eagles were seen taking the entrails of the shot chamoix.

Delayed effect of pinealectomy on hibernation of the golden-mantled ground squirrel

Pinealectomy or radical sham pinealectomy were performed on adult golden-mantled ground squirrels,Spermophilus (=Citellus) lateralis, approximately 1 month prior to the date of normal winter emergence. The first hibernatory period and subsequent active season were not different in either of the operated groups from intact animals. However, although the initiation of the second hibernatory period was not affected in the pinealectomized animals, this group failed to show the progressive increase in the length of heterothermic bouts that is characteristic of normal hibernation. Also, terminal arousal occurred approximately 6 weeks earlier in the second year after pinealectomy. Male squirrels showed a corresponding time compression in their annual gonadal cycle, as was assessed by testicular state.These results suggest that the pineal gland of the golden-mantled ground squirrel is involved in the expression of the annual hibernatory cycle. In the absence of the pineal gland the adult of this species is unable to sustain the normal depth and duration of hibernation in the second over-wintering period following pinealectomy.We have carried out additional experiments with young, laboratory-bornS. lateralis and with field-caught, adultS. richardsonii. Toll-like receptor 4 deficiency: Smaller infarcts,but nogain in function

Backgound  

It has been reported that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) deficiency reduces infarct size after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R). However, measurement of MI/R injury was limited and did not include cardiac function. In a chronic closed-chest model we assessed whether cardiac function is preserved in TLR4-deficient mice (C3H/HeJ) following MI/R, and whether myocardial and systemic cytokine expression differed compared to wild type (WT).
