Comparative genomics has developed by comparison of distantly related genomes, for which the link between the reported evolutionary changes and species development/physiology/ecology is not obvious. It is argued that the mouse (genus Mus) is an optimal model for microevolutionary genomics in vertebrates. This is because the mouse genome sequence, physical and genetic map have been completed, because mouse genetics, morpho-anatomy, pathology, behavior and ecology are well-studied, and because the Mus genus is a diverse, well- documented taxon, allowing comparative studies at the level of individual, population, subspecies, and species. The potential of the interaction between mouse genome and mouse biodiversity is illustrated by recent studies of speciation in the house mouse Mus musculus, and studies about the evolution of isochores, the peculiar pattern of GC-content variation across mammalian genomes.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) along a transect from the Atlantic Ocean (AO) to the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) Sea differs from that of most other marine taxa in this area. Three populations (AO, Western Mediterranean [WM], EM) are recognized today, which were originally two allopatric populations. How two ancestral genetic units have evolved into three distinct units has not been addressed yet. Therefore, to investigate mechanisms that lead to the emergence of the central WM population, its current status, and its connectivity with the two parental populations, we applied 20 nuclear loci that were either gene associated or gene independent. Results confirmed the existence of three distinct gene pools, with higher differentiation at two transitional areas, the Almeria‐Oran Front (AOF) and of the Siculo‐Tunisian Strait (STS), than within any population. Significant linkage disequilibrium and heterozygote excess indicated that the STS is probably another tension zone, as already described for the AOF. Neutrality tests fail to reveal marker loci that could be driven by selection within or among metapopulations, except for locus DLA0068. Collectively, results support that the central WM population arose by trapping two tensions zones at distinct geographic locations of limited connectivity. Population assignment further revealed that WM individuals were more introgressed than individuals from the other two metapopulations. This suggests that this population might result from hybrid swarming, and was or is still seeded by genes received through the filter of each tension zone.  相似文献

New Robertsonian (Rb) populations of the house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus) carrying different combinations of centric fusions are reported in France, Switzerland, and Germany. In Alsace (France), the diploid number varied from 2n = 38 to 34; four fusions were present, with Rb(4.12) homozygous in all populations whereas Rb(5.10), Rb(5.7), or Rb(10.14) were found to be segregating. In Switzerland, only all-acrocentric mice (2n = 40) were present in Bern while Rb(5.7) and Rb(9.16) occurred in Basel. In the Konstanz locality from southern Germany, all the mice were homozygous for nine Rb fusions: Rb(1.18), Rb(2.5), Rb(3.6), Rb(4.12), Rb(7.15), Rb(8.17), Rb(9.14), Rb(10.11), and Rb(13.16). The phylogenetic relationship of these new Rb populations with those already known is discussed.  相似文献

Background  

Molecular sequence data have become the standard in modern day phylogenetics. In particular, several long-standing questions of mammalian evolutionary history have been recently resolved thanks to the use of molecular characters. Yet, most studies have focused on only a handful of standard markers. The availability of an ever increasing number of whole genome sequences is a golden mine for modern systematics. Genomic data now provide the opportunity to select new markers that are potentially relevant for further resolving branches of the mammalian phylogenetic tree at various taxonomic levels.  相似文献

We theoretically demonstrate the possibility of obtaining nanosources through an original schema based on the generation of the radially polarized surface plasmon mode of a cylindrical metallic tip. This mode has no cutoff radius and can propagate along the tip walls until its nanometric-sized apex. Instead of radiating from the tip end, the guided mode will give rise to a nanospotlight via the well-known antenna effect. 3D calculations demonstrate that both surface plasmon-guided mode and antenna effect are directly involved in the light confinement. Near-field optical microscopy can benefit significantly from this kind of probe because the sample does not need to be directly illuminated.  相似文献

Inferring the history of isolation and gene flow during species differentiation can inform us on the processes underlying their formation. Following their recent expansion in Europe, two subspecies of the house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus and Mus musculus musculus) have formed a hybrid zone maintained by hybrid incompatibilities and possibly behavioural reinforcement, offering a good model of incipient speciation. We reconstruct the history of their divergence using an approximate Bayesian computation framework and sequence variation at 57 autosomal loci. We find support for a long isolation period preceding the advent of gene flow around 200,000 generations ago, much before the formation of the European hybrid zone a few thousand years ago. The duration of the allopatric episode appears long enough (74% of divergence time) to explain the accumulation of many post-zygotic incompatibilities expressed in the present hybrid zone. The ancient contact inferred could have played a role in mating behaviour divergence and laid the ground for further reinforcement. We suggest that both subspecies originally colonized the Middle East from the northern Indian subcontinent, domesticus settling on the shores of the Persian Gulf and musculus on those of the Caspian Sea. Range expansions during interglacials would have induced secondary contacts, presumably in Iran, where they must have also interacted with Mus musculus castaneus. Future studies should incorporate this possibility, and we point to Iran and its surroundings as a hot spot for house mouse diversity and speciation studies.  相似文献
