Mass Collaboration in Earthquake Risk Management

The mechanism of mass collaboration in risk management was studied during the Sichuan earthquake under a Web-based “PeopleFinder” project, where information is contributed and shared among mass contributors. The case study is provided by a great earthquake that happened in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, of southwestern China at 2:28 p.m. on May 12, 2008. We witnessed and experienced the rescue and relief efforts for the great earthquake. In this article, two fundamental frameworks are developed to study the mechanism of mass collaboration. Mass collaboration is proven to be effective in a big public crisis such as the Sichuan earthquake.     

Angiogenesis in bronchial circulatory system after unilateral pulmonary artery obstruction

Physiol. 82(1):284-291, 1997.We studied the effects of left pulmonary artery(LPA) ligation on the bronchial circulatory system (BCS) by using asheep model. LPA was ligated in the newborn lambs soon after birth(n = 8), and when the sheep were ~3yr of age anatomic studies revealed marked angiogenesis in BCS.Bronchial blood flow and cardiac output were studied by placing flowprobes around the bronchial and pulmonary arteries in four adult sheep.After LPA ligation, bronchial blood flow increased from 35 ± 6 to134 ± 42 ml/min in ~3 wk (P < 0.05). We also studied gas-exchange functions of BCS ~3 yr after the ligation of LPA in newborn lambs (n = 4) and used a control group (n = 12)in which LPA was ligated acutely. In the left lung,O₂ uptake after acute ligation was16 ± 3 ml/min and was similar to the chronic model, whereasCO₂ output in the control group was 27 ± 3 ml/min compared with 79 ± 12 ml/min in the chronic preparation (P < 0.05).We conclude that LPA ligation causes marked angiogenesis in BCS that iscapable of performing some gas-exchange functions.

     

In vitro effect of prostaglandins,prostaglandin endoperoxides and thromboxane on rat intestinal alkaline phosphatase and (Ca2+-Mg2+) adenosine triphosphatase

The activity of alkaline phosphate and²⁺-Mg²⁺ adenosine triphosphatase, two of the enzymes involved in limpid and calcium uptake across the intestinal membrane, were increased in experimental atherosclerosis. Administration ofAnnapavala sindhooram, an antiatherosclerotic drug, lowers these enzyme levels to near normal values. Prostaglandin E2 stimulated the enzyme activitiesin vitro, while prostaglandin endoperoxide inhibited the activity. Thromboxane and other prostaglandins had no effect on the enzyme activities. Addition of the antiatherosclerotic drug to thein vitro assay system reversed the effect of both prostaglandin E₂ and prostaglandin endoperoxide.     

A specific, non-chromatographic radioimmunoassay for human plasma cortisol.

A radioimmunoassay technique has been developed for the measurement of cortisol in a single methylene chloride extract of human plasma without chromatography. The antiserum, obtained by immunizing rabbits with cortisol-3-carboxymethyl-oxime conjugated to bovine serum albumin, had a high affinity (KA = 1.8 X 10(9) 1/mole) and capacity (2.3 X 10(-6) moles/L undiluted serum) for cortisol. The minimum detectable amount determined at the lower 95% confidence limit of the buffer control tubes was 8.3 +/- 4.7 pg/tube and a log dose - logit response standard curve was linear between 20 pg and 20 ng/tube. The antiserum was highly specific for cortisol with only corticosterone, cortisone, 11-deoxycortisol and 21-deoxycortisol showing significant cross-reaction (12.4, 6.6, 3.8 and 3.7%, respectively). The cross-reaction for the other tested naturally occurring and synthetic steroids did not exceed 1%. Regression analysis of cortisol concentration estimates obtained on 20 samples before and after Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography gave a coefficient of correlation (r) of 0.995 and a regression coefficient (b) of 1.04. Recovery of cortisol added to plasma samples was quantitative. The intra-assay error was 8.5% and the inter-assay error averaged 5.7%. The method is simple requiring a single solvent extraction of plasma, therefore permitting large numbers of samples to be handled efficiently by a single technician.     

2,6-Dithienyl-4-furyl pyridines: Synthesis,topoisomerase I and II inhibition,cytotoxicity, structure–activity relationship,and docking study

For the development of novel antitumor agents, 2,6-dithienyl-4-furyl pyridine derivatives were prepared and evaluated for their topoisomerase I and II inhibitory activity as well as cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines. Among the 21 prepared compounds, compound 24 exhibited strong topoisomerase I inhibitory activity. In addition, a docking study with topoisomerase I and compound 24 was performed.
