In the deserts of northern and southern Africa, respectively, ants of the genera Cataglyphisf oerster (Formicinae) and Ocymyrmexe mery (Myrmicinae) occupy the same ecological niche, which comprises that of a strictly diurnal thermophilic scavenger. Their daily foraging activities exhibit a bimodal pattern in summer and unimodality or complete inactivity in winter. The present study investigates whether these overall patterns are a result of endogenous annual activity rhythms of the colony or are triggered directly by the prevailing ambient temperatures. By exploiting various seasonal temperature regimes and, in particular, by creating near‐nest winter conditions experimentally in summer, it is shown that the latter hypothesis is generally true. However, there are daily and annual variations in the temperature set points at which foraging activities start and finish. These temperatures are lower in the winter than in the summer months and, in summer, they are lower in the morning than in the afternoon. The level of foraging activity in the afternoon reaches maximum values at surface temperatures of 60–63 °C. This means that, in summer months, these thermophilic ants concentrate their foraging activities into a period of almost lethal temperature regimes, during which they have to devote a substantial portion of their time outside the nest to respite (i.e. cooling‐off) behaviour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The uppermost dorsal part of the honey bee's compound eye contains a group of c. 150 specialized ommatidia. The photoreceptors of these ommatidia are characterized by a number of anatomical and physiological peculiarities which suggest that they have functional significance for the detection of polarized skylight. Here, we show by painting out different parts of the eye and recording the bee's behavioural responses that the specialized photoreceptors at the dorsal margin of the eye are indeed necessary for detecting polarized skylight and deriving compass information from celestial e-vector patterns. Hence, this group of specialized ommatidia can be called the POL area of the bee's compound eye.  相似文献

The maize glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 4 (GapC4)promoter confers strong and specific anaerobic gene expressionin tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and potato (Solanum tuberosum).Here we show that the promoter is also anaerobically inducedin Arabidopsis thaliana. Histochemical analysis demonstratesthat the promoter is anaerobically induced in roots, leaves,stems and flower organs. Surprisingly, the strong anaerobicinduction of the promoter is dependent on light and on the substitutionof oxygen with carbon dioxide. High carbon dioxide concentrationalone does not induce the promoter in the presence of oxygenand light. If anaerobic conditions are generated under completedarkness or if plants are submerged, no induction above backgroundis observed. When transgenic tobacco harbouring a GapC4 promoter–reportergene construct is analysed for light dependent anaerobic induction,the results are indistinguishable from those with arabidopsis.The implications for using the GapC4 promoter as an anaerobicreporter for monitoring alterations in the anaerobic signaltransduction pathway are discussed.  相似文献

The time-course of acclimation (0-5h) of the red alga Porphyridium purpureum with respect to total proteins, phycoerythrin (PE) and phycobilisomes (PBS) has been studied at different N availability and different light regimes. After a high N input, acclimation takes place in two phases. The first one, which is photoindependent is characterized by simultaneous increase of proteins and PE. At low N input, this first phase is not detected. In the second phase the PE content increases only under low light together with an increase of the PBS size, followed probably by an increase in the number of PBS. The effectiveness of the energy transfer increases under these conditions. A rapid decrease in the PBS size correlated with a decrease of the energy transfer is observed at high irradiance. Free PE plays an important role in the organization-disorganization of the PBS at low N concentration (inverse correlation between free PE and PE attached to PBS). Free PE is not accumulated in the cell after a high N input at high irradiance. Independently of photoacclimation, two species of PBS appear with different PE content and different capacities to aggregate with other compounds. A clear correlation appears between the level of coupling of the PBS and the fluorescence ‘in vivo’ of the whole cells. The comparison between dissociated and undissociated PBS as well as between PBS obtained after the different acclimation processes allows the determination of the presence of two linker polypeptides probably associated with B-PE (37 and 32–5 kDa) and two associated with PC and APC (27 and 25 kDa). That suggests that acclimation of PBS requires a parallel stoichiometric response of biliproteins and the linker polypeptides involved in the efficiency of the energy transfer.  相似文献

The reproductive and developmental biology of the sessile gastropodVermicularia spirata (Philippi, 1836), collected from the FloridaKeys, was studied from living and preserved material. Individualsof this species attach themselves to a variety of substrata,but were mainly found embedded in the white sponge Geodia gibberosa.Pallial reproductive structures of both sexes of V. spiratawere found greatly to resemble those of Turritella communis,a free-living member of the same family. In both species, animalsof both sexes have open pallial ducts formed by two wide, recurvedlaminae. In the female of V. spirata, the laminae of the pallialoviduct serve as a capsule gland; a pair of side pockets representa fertilization pouch (possibly doubling as a copulatory bursa)and a seminal receptacle. The functional significance of theextensive, open, pallial sperm duct is not yet clear. Vermiculariaspirata is a protandrous hermaphrodite, and small males arefree-living; they become attached at about the time they undergosex reversal. Fertilization is probably brought about by malescrawling close to the apertures of the large, sessile femalesbefore releasing sperm. Egg capsules are brooded in the females'mantle cavities. Ova of about 300 µm diameter give riseto large (about 600 µm long) swimming-crawling veligerlarvae with shells of two and a half whorls. The veligers arecapable of metamorphosis at the time of hatching, but siblingsfrom one brood metamorphosed over a two-week period in the laboratory.Juvenile snails grew rapidly by filtering phytoplankton addedto their culture water. The life history of V. spirata is welladapted to assure fertilization and recruitment in a speciesotherwise committed to a sessile, filter-feeding existence.
