VACUUM DRYING OF STEAM STERILIZED DRESSINGS   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
SUMMARY: The degree of vacuum and time of application needed to dry steam sterilized dressings has been investigated. If the steam supply is dry, and the pressure in the drying stage is reduced to an absolute pressure of 50 mm Hg, dressings will be cool and dry without holding the vacuum, provided they are not damp before sterilization.  相似文献

New material of Diplopteridium holdenii is described from the Drybook Sandstone assemblage of Upper Visean (Middle Mississippian) age at Puddlebrook, Gloucestershire. Vegetative leaves consist of bifurcate fronds which are pinnately divided and terminate in narrow pinnule segments. The fronds are arranged spirally in terminal crowns on a narrow, spindly axis. Fertile leaves consist of fronds which bear a median, dichotomous branchlet which gives rise to reflexed, bilaterally symmetrical cupules. One specimen demonstrates that a single fertile crown consisted of cupulate and vegetative fronds. The detailed morphology of the cupules is reconstructed from compression/impression and fusainized material from both attached and isolated units. An isotomously branched synangiate organ is also described from the locality. The synangiate organ is assigned to a new genus and species. A comparison of D. holdenii and this synangiate organ with Diplopteridium teilianum from north Wales and Sphenopteris bifida and Sphenopteris affine from northern England and Scotland, provides indirect evidence that the synangiate organ may have belonged to D. holdenii . Bifurcate and trifurcate fronds associated with dichotomous branchlets bearing either synangial or cupulate structures was a common association in the Visean compression assemblages of Great Britain.  相似文献

SUBCLASSES of the three major classes of human immunoglobulins, IgG, IgA and IgM, are recognized: four of IgG are well defined1,2 and at least two of IgA3–5 and two of IgM6,7 have been demonstrated. This communication presents evidence for the existence of an antigenic heterogeneity in the heavy chains of IgD, which may also be indicative of subclasses within this class of immunoglobulin.  相似文献

In 1973 tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) strain M II-16 was successfully used by growers in the United Kingdom to protect commercial tomato crops against the severe effects of naturally occurring strains of TMV. However, plants in many crops had mosaic leaf symptoms which were occasionally severe, so possible reasons for symptom appearance were examined. The concentration of the mutant strain in commercially produced inocula (assessed by infectivity and spectrophotometry) ranged from 28 to 1220 μg virus/ml; nevertheless all samples contained sufficient virus to infect a high percentage of inoculated tomato seedlings. Increasing the distance between the plants and the spray gun used for inoculation from 5 to 15 cm resulted in a significant decrease in the number of tomato seedlings infected. When M II-16 infected tomato plants were subsequently inoculated with each of fifty-three different isolates of TMV, none showed severe symptoms of the challenging isolates within 4 wk, although some isolates of strain o induced atypically mild leaf symptoms. In a further experiment, M II-16 infected plants showed conspicuous leaf symptoms only 7 wk after inoculation with a virulent TMV isolate. M II-16 multiplied more slowly in tomato plants and had a lower specific infectivity than a naturally occurring strain of TMV. More than 50% of plants in crops inoculated with strain M II-16 which subsequently showed conspicuous leaf mosaic contained TMV strain 1 or a form intermediate between strains o and 1. It is suggested that the production of TMV symptoms in commercial crops previously inoculated with strain M II-16 may result from an initially low level of infection, due to inefficient inoculation, which allows subsequent infection of unprotected plants by virulent strains. Incomplete protection by strain M II-16 against all naturally occurring strains may also be an important factor.  相似文献

  • 1 To investigate the carrying capacity and factors affecting growth of rainbow trout in Lake Rotoiti, we employed a bioenergetics model to assess the influence of stocking rates, timing of releases and prey abundance on growth and prey consumption. We hypothesised that stocking rates and prey abundance would affect growth and prey consumption by influencing per‐capita prey availability, and that the environmental conditions encountered by fish at the time of stocking would affect growth and consumption.
  • 2 Prey consumption of stocked rainbow trout was calculated with the Wisconsin bioenergetics model. We calculated growth trajectories of released trout based on data from stocked trout that were released in spring and autumn from 1993 to 2009 and then re‐captured by anglers. Diet, prey energy density, body mass lost during spawning and lake temperature were measured locally.
  • 3 Stocking timing had no effect on return rates to anglers or length or weight of caught fish. Although trout released in autumn were smaller than those released in spring, autumn‐released trout grew at a faster rate and had similar lengths and weights to spring cohorts after 2 years of growth in the lake. Modelled consumption parameters were negatively correlated with trout population size, suggesting that stocking rates (347–809 fish ha?1 year?1) caused density‐dependent effects on growth. Although common smelt (Retropinna retropinna) accounted for 85% of total prey consumption, no significant relationship was found between prey consumption by individual trout and adult smelt abundance, possibly because trout are targeting smaller smelt that our abundance estimate did not account for.
  • 4 Releasing trout in autumn appears to be advantageous for growth, possibly because (i) temperature is more suitable for growth in autumn–winter than in spring–summer and (ii) prey for small trout is abundant in autumn. Mild winter conditions appear to enhance overwinter survival and growth of rainbow trout in warm‐temperate lakes compared to higher latitudes. This implies that moderately productive warm‐temperate lake ecosystems are highly suitable for trout growth in winter, but less so in summer, when lake stratification and high nutrient levels may create conditions suitable for algal blooms and hypolimnetic deoxygenation. High growth rates of trout in warm‐temperate lakes can therefore be supported by timing releases to coincide with favourable winter conditions.

Burkholderia has only recently been recognized as a potential nitrogen-fixing symbiont of legumes, but we find that the origins of symbiosis in Burkholderia are much deeper than previously suspected. We sampled 143 symbionts from 47 native species of Mimosa across 1800 km in central Brazil and found that 98% were Burkholderia . Gene sequences defined seven distinct and divergent species complexes within the genus Burkholderia . The symbiosis-related genes formed deep Burkholderia -specific clades, each specific to a species complex, implying that these genes diverged over a long period within Burkholderia without substantial horizontal gene transfer between species complexes.  相似文献

Genetic variation was examined in five microsatellite loci to seek evidence of genetic differentiation and restricted gene flow that would support the taxonomic division of Gymnadenia into three species ( G. borealis , G. conopsea , and G. densiflora ). A total of 107 alleles was detected in 17 populations from England, Scotland, and Ireland. The mean expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.48 to 0.81. The differentiation in allele frequencies amongst populations that had been assigned to each taxon on the basis of morphology was sufficiently large to support the taxa as distinct species. Phylogenetic trees based on microsatellite allele frequencies, as well as assignment tests, supported the existence of three distinct groups with at least partial restriction of gene flow between them. There was substantial homozygote excess, leading to high F IS estimates, for most loci in most populations. This is unlikely to have been a result of widespread null alleles, and more probably reflects a high level of inbreeding in G. conopsea . This inference requires further investigation. 1. Interactions between species can vary from mutually beneficial to evolutionarily neutral to antagonistic, even when the same two species are involved. Similarly, social interactions between members of the same species can lie on a spectrum from conflict to cooperation. 2. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether variation in the two types of social behaviour are interconnected. Is the fitness of the various classes of social partner within species (such as parent and offspring, or male and female) differently affected by interactions with a second species? Moreover, can inter‐specific interactions influence the outcome of social interactions within species? 3. The present experiments focus on the interactions between the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides Herbst and the phoretic mite Poecilochirus carabi G. Canestrini & R. Canestrini. The approach was to measure the fitness of burying beetle mothers, fathers, and offspring after reproduction, which took place either in the presence or absence of mites. 4. We found that male, female, and larval burying beetles derive contrasting fitness costs and benefits from their interactions with the mite, despite sharing a common family environment. From the mite's perspective, its relationship with the burying beetle can, therefore, be simultaneously antagonistic, neutral, and possibly even mutualistic, depending on the particular family member involved. We also found that mites can potentially change the outcome of evolutionary conflicts within the family. 5. We conclude that inter‐specific interactions can explain some of the variation in social interactions seen within species. It is further suggested that intra‐specific interactions might contribute to variation in the outcome of interactions between species.  相似文献

Forecasting how species will respond to climatic change requires knowledge of past community dynamics. Here we use time‐series data from the small‐mammal fossil records of two caves in the Great Basin of the American West to evaluate how contrasting and variable local paleoclimates have shaped small‐mammal abundance dynamics over the last ~7500 years of climatic change. We then predict how species and communities will respond to future scenarios of increased warming and aridity coupled with continued spread of an invasive annual grass (Bromus tectorum). We find that most community‐level responses to climatic change occur in the mammalian abundance structure at both sites; the dominance of the community by individuals from species with a southern geographic affinity increases with climatic warming. This suggests that responses occurred in situ rather than by the immigration of new taxa over this time interval. Despite predictability at the community‐scale, species‐level relationships between abundance and climate are variable and are not necessarily explained by a species' geographic affinity. Species present at both sites, however, exhibit remarkably similar responses to climate at each site, indicating that species autecology (specifically dietary functional group) is important in determining response to climatic warming. Regression‐tree analyses show remarkable concordance between the two cave faunas and highlight the importance of a granivorous dietary strategy in this desert ecosystem. Under projections of increased temperature and decreased precipitation over the next 50 years, our results indicate that granivores should thrive as communities become more dominated by individuals with a southern geographic affinity. Granivores, however, are negatively impacted by the invasion of cheatgrass. The last century of anthropogenic impacts has thus placed granivores at a greater risk of extinction than predicted under climate‐only scenarios.  相似文献
