The Devils Hole pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis, is a federally-endangered fish that is endemic to Devils Hole, a discontiguous part of Death Valley National Park in Nye County, Nevada. Due to its status, Devils Hole pupfish monitoring must be non-obtrusive and thereby exclude techniques that require handling fish. Due to a recent decline in pupfish abundance, Devils Hole pupfish managers have expressed a need for a model that describes population dynamics. This population model would be used to identify vulnerable life history stage(s) and inform management actions. We constructed a set of individual-based simulation models designed to explore effects of population processes and evaluate assumptions. We developed a baseline model, whose output best resembled both observed length-frequency data and predicted intra-annual abundance patterns. We then ran simulations with 5 % increases in egg-larval, juvenile, and adult survival rates to better understand Devils Hole pupfish life history, thereby helping identify vulnerable life history stages that should become the target of management actions. Simulation models with temporally constant adult, juvenile, and egg-larval survival rates were able to reproduce observed length-frequency distributions and predicted intra-annual population patterns. In particular, models with monthly adult and juvenile survival rates of 80 % and an egg-larval survival rate of 4.7 % replicated patterns in observed data. Population growth was most affected by 5 % increases in egg-larval survival, whereas adult and juvenile survival rates had similar but lesser effects on population growth. Outputs from the model were used to assess factors suspected of influencing Devils Hole pupfish population decline.  相似文献

Effects of coumarin on fresh weight, dry matter, protein and nucleic acid content per cell in attached roots of maize and wheat and in whole excised elongation zones of maize were determined. The inhibition in cell length exerted by coumarin did not correspond to an inhibition of the net synthetic capacity. Coumarin treatment increased the cell surface, the production of dry matter and the protein content per cell. The dry matter and the protein content per unit surface was slightly increased or unaffected. The effect of coumann on cell shape seemed to be independent of that on dry matter production and net protein synthesis. The same was found in excised elongation zones. —The net DNA-synthesis per cell was slightly increased in attached roots by coumann treatment, but this effect was probably not correlated with the morphogenetic changes. Inhibition of DNA-synthesis with hydroxyurea did not alter the coumarin induced changes in cell shape. —The net RNA-synthesis per cell was slightly decreased after coumarin treatment, but the net RNA-synthesis per cell and the morphogenetic effects exerted by coumarin were not related with each other. Inhibition of m-RNA-synthesis with actinomycin D did not prevent the effects of coumarin on cell division, cell expansion, dry matter production and net protein synthesis. The same was true for inhibitors of protein synthesis, puromycin and p-fluorophenyl-alanine. The findings are in support of the view that coumarin affects already existing structures or enzymes. —Comparisons between coumarin and the uncouplers, DNP and dicoumarol, showed that the effects of coumarin were not, solely, due to uncoupling. SH-protecting agents, BAL, DTE and glutathione, did, with few exceptions, not reduce the morphogenetic effects of coumarin.  相似文献

Seasonal and daily patterns of zooplankton populations are often predictable in natural lakes. Distinct zonation and geomorphic differences in reservoirs, however, make ecological extrapolations from lakes to reservoirs uncertain. We describe the spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton, algae, and water clarity across reservoir zones and along a depth gradient in Glen Elder Reservoir, Kansas. Daphnia species were most abundant in the lacustrine zone, with D. pulicaria numerically dominant in early spring and D. mendotae dominant later in 1999 and 2000. Rotifers (Keratella quadrata, Asplanchnaspp.) were dominant in the riverine zone in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Algal biomass was not significantly different between zones through most of the sampling periods, except late April in 1999 and mid-April in 2000. Chlorophyll a exceeded 81 μg l?1 in the lacustrine zone in mid- to late-April in 1999 and 2000, and exceeded 90μg l?1in the riverine zone in mid-April. Water clarity was significantly lower in the riverine zone in 1999 and 2000. Most zooplankton taxa had similar depth distributions at night and day, indicating a lack of diel vertical migration behavior on a large scale. However, in small scale (30 cm vertical enclosures) laboratory experiments, both D. pulicaria and D. mendotae occupied significantly deeper depths (>25 cm) under lighted conditions in the presence of fish chemical cues compared to shallow water (7–17 cm) under dark conditions and in the absence of fish cues. These contrasting results suggest that, as in other studies, Daphnia sense cues from predators and alter their depth in the water column on small scales without natural constraints on movement and choices. However, other factors in the reservoir such as wind-generated water movements and cues from other predators may prevent depth choices similar to those seen under controlled conditions. These results illustrate biotic and abiotic differences between riverine and lacustrine zones in a large reservoir, and contrast with Daphnia depth segregation and migration patterns in natural lakes.  相似文献

Food processing is costly, potentially limiting the energy and time devoted to other essential functions such as locomotion or reproduction. In ectotherms, post-prandial thermophily, the selection of a warm environmental temperature after feeding, may be advantageous in minimizing the duration of this elevated cost. Although present in many vertebrate taxa, this behaviour had not previously been observed in invertebrates. Sanguivorous leeches ingest large blood meals that are costly to process and limit mobility until excess fluid can actively be expelled to reduce body volume. When presented with a temperature gradient from 10°C to 30°C, leeches select a temperature that is significantly warmer (24.3 ± 0.9°C, n = 6) than their acclimation temperature (T(a), 21°C). Unfed leeches preferred temperatures that were significantly cooler than ambient (12.8 ± 0.9°C, n = 6). This behavioural strategy is consistent with minimizing the time course of elevated post-feeding energy costs and reducing energy expenditure during fasting. Our observations raise the possibility that thermoregulatory behaviour of this type is an unrecognized feature of other invertebrate taxa.  相似文献

Background

At present, six accessible sequences of 16S rDNA from Taylorella equigenitalis (T. equigenitalis) are available, whose sequence differences occur at a few nucleotide positions. Thus it is important to determine these sequences from additional strains in other countries, if possible, in order to clarify any anomalies regarding 16S rDNA sequence heterogeneity. Here, we clone and sequence the approximate full-length 16S rDNA from additional strains of T. equigenitalis isolated in Japan, Australia and France and compare these sequences to the existing published sequences.

Results

Clarification of any anomalies regarding 16S rDNA sequence heterogeneity of T. equigenitalis was carried out. When cloning, sequencing and comparison of the approximate full-length 16S rDNA from 17 strains of T. equigenitalis isolated in Japan, Australia and France, nucleotide sequence differences were demonstrated at the six loci in the 1,469 nucleotide sequence. Moreover, 12 polymorphic sites occurred among 23 sequences of the 16S rDNA, including the six reference sequences.

Conclusion

High sequence similarity (99.5% or more) was observed throughout, except from nucleotide positions 138 to 501 where substitutions and deletions were noted.  相似文献

Bioinsecticides are important in the control of disease vectors, but data regarding their physiological effects on target insects are incomplete. This study describes morphological changes that occur in the midgut of third instar Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) following treatment with a methanolic extract of Annona coriacea (Magnoliales: Annonaceae). Dissected midguts were subdivided into anterior and posterior regions and analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Insects exposed to the extract displayed intense, destructive cytoplasmic vacuolization in columnar and regenerative midgut cells. The apical surfaces of columnar cells exhibited cytoplasmic protrusions oriented toward the lumen, suggesting that these cells could be involved in apocrine secretory processes and/or apoptosis. We report that A. coriacea extracts induced morphological alterations in the midgut of A. aegypti midgut larvae, supporting the use of plant extracts for control of the dengue vector.  相似文献

Soil biota are responsible for essential ecosystem services such as carbon storage, nutrient cycling and water retention. However, assessment of the condition of soil biota is hampered by an overwhelming level of diversity. With representatives in all trophic levels of the food web, nematode communities can be used as bioindicators. Accurate assessment of nematode assemblages requires insight into the distribution of specimens with distinct food preferences. With the availability of taxon‐specific quantitative PCR assays, distribution patterns of multiple nematode groups can be investigated simultaneously. Here, microscale patchiness of 45 nematode taxa was studied on 12 sampling sites (each with four adjacent microplots) located on arable fields or semi‐natural grasslands (‘system’), and on marine, river clay or sandy soils (‘soil type’). From each microplot, five composite samples were collected. Contrary to our expectations, an increase in the number of cores per composite sample did not result in more accurate measurements, and apparently the levels of microscale patchiness of the taxa are low compared to what has been reported for oligophagous plant‐parasites. System and soil type did not affect microscale distribution. To investigate the level of patchiness in more detail, detection probability (DP) and variability of abundances were calculated. Common and widespread bacterivorous and fungivorous taxa had DP ≥ 90%, confirming low level of microscale patchiness. With DPs of 40%–70%, predators and most omnivores showed degrees of local clustering. An overview of mean variabilities of abundances is presented that offers insight into how feeding preferences impact the microscale distribution both between and within trophic groups.  相似文献

The population health of endangered Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) was monitored from 10 February 1986 to 28 September 2000 by necropsy of animals that were killed by vehicles, euthanized because of terminal injuries or disease conditions, or found dead. The predominant mortality factor during the period was collision with motor vehicles; however, several infectious diseases were diagnosed, including infections with Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Haemonchus contortus, Salmonella spp., and Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. During the period monitored, the only infectious disease that was thought to have affected population dynamics was haemonchosis. Nevertheless, several of the observed diseases have potential to impact viability of the Key deer population under appropriate environmental conditions.  相似文献

The major diseases caused by N. meningitidis are responsible for death and disability, especially in young infants. In general, most of the recent work on N. meningitidis focuses on potential antigens and their functions, immunogenicity, and pathogenicity mechanisms.
