The topography of the Sado estuary, the second largest of Portugal, comprises the outer estuary inside the entrance channel
and the inner estuary, on the inward side of which begins the tidal mudflats. The outer estuary subtidal area covers approximately
70 km2 and presents a series of longitudinal intertidal sandbanks, separating a northern and a southern channel.
A benthic survey was undertaken in the outer estuary during June 1986, in which superficial sediments and macrofauna were
sampled at 133 locations. The environmental variables measured in the superficial sediments were the temperature, the granulometric
structure, the silt, sand and the gravel content, and the total organic matter content. The primary macrofauna biological
variables studied were the species composition, abundance and biomass, calculated on wet, dry and ash-free dry weight.
The granulometry and the organic content of superficial sediments agreed with the transient and the residual currents velocity
field, simulated in a 2-D hydrodynamic model previously elaborated for the outer estuary. The northern channel superficial
sediments showed higher silt and total organic matter content, while the model also suggested lower transient and residual
velocities, water flow and shear stress in this channel.
The distribution patterns of the subtidal macrofauna were separated into two main groups of species, one comprising taxa essentially
settled near the estuarine mouth and the other inwards. Biological primary variables also showed consistent patterns, comparable
to other Portuguese estuaries. The major subtidal benthic biotopes were obtained through classification analysis and related
to the prevailing hydrophysical and sedimentary conditions in the outer estuary. 相似文献

Reports of successful predator attacks on primates are rare. Primates from all major radiations are particularly susceptible to raptors, carnivores, and snakes. Among New World primates, reports of snake predation are limited to medium- and small-bodied species. Here, we report the first documented case of successful predation of an atelid by a snake—an adult female Purús red howler monkey, Alouatta puruensis, that was subdued by a ca. 2-m-long Boa constrictor in an arboreal setting at a height of 7.5 m above the ground. The victim belonged to a group composed of six individuals (one adult male, two adult females, two juveniles, and one infant) that inhabited a ca. 2.5-ha forest fragment in the State of Rondônia, western Brazilian Amazon. The boa applied the species’ typical hunting behavior of striking and immediately coiling around its prey and then killing it through constriction (probably in less than 5 min), but the entire restraint period lasted 38 min. The attack occurred around noon. The howler was swallowed head-first in 76 min. The only group member to respond to the distress vocalization emitted by the victim was the other adult female, which was closest to the location where the attack occurred. This female ran toward the snake, also vocalizing, and hit it with her hands several times, but the snake did not react and she moved off to a nearby tree from where she watched most of the interaction. The remaining group members stayed resting at a height approximately 15 m above the victim in a nearby tree without showing any overt signs of stress, except for a single whimper vocalization. This event indicates that even large-bodied atelids are vulnerable to predation by large snakes and suggests that B. constrictor may be a more common predator of primates. 相似文献

Surface fires burn extensive areas of tropical forests each year, altering resource availability, biotic interactions, and, ultimately, plant diversity. In transitional forest between the Brazilian cerrado (savanna) and high stature Amazon forest, we took advantage of a long-term fire experiment to establish a factorial study of the interactions between fire, nutrient availability, and herbivory on early plant regeneration. Overall, five annual burns reduced the number and diversity of regenerating stems. Community composition changed substantially after repeated fires, and species common in the cerrado became more abundant. The number of recruits and their diversity were reduced in the burned area, but burned plots closed to herbivores with nitrogen additions had a 14 % increase in recruitment. Diversity of recruits also increased up to 50 % in burned plots when nitrogen was added. Phosphorus additions were related to an increase in species evenness in burned plots open to herbivores. Herbivory reduced seedling survival overall and increased diversity in burned plots when nutrients were added. This last result supports our hypothesis that positive relationships between herbivore presence and diversity would be strongest in treatments that favor herbivory—in this case herbivory was higher in burned plots which were initially lower in diversity. Regenerating seedlings in less diverse plots were likely more apparent to herbivores, enabling increased herbivory and a stronger signal of negative density dependence. In contrast, herbivores generally decreased diversity in more species rich unburned plots. Although this study documents complex interactions between repeated burns, nutrients, and herbivory, it is clear that fire initiates a shift in the factors that are most important in determining the diversity and number of recruits. This change may have long-lasting effects as the forest progresses through succession. 相似文献

The lack of predictability in litter-mix studies may result from the low correlation between species number and the traits that drive the processes under observation. From the standpoint of litter-quality-dependent ecological processes, we propose that litter chemical qualities are functional traits and introduce a multivariate index of chemical diversity (CDQ ) based on Rao's quadratic entropy to describe the compositional heterogeneity of litter and foliar mixtures. Using published data from temperate and tropical forest systems to illustrate the relationship between species richness and chemical diversity, we show the variation of chemical diversity based on profiles of total nutrient concentrations (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) with species richness. We discuss how this behavior may explain the idiosyncratic responses exhibited in litter-mix experiments and how it may contribute to the observed dominance of species identity over species diversity. As a summary of resource heterogeneity relevant to detritivore and microbial processes, the chemical diversity index is potentially a better predictor of diversity effects on nutrient dynamics than species richness. Finally, we propose the use of infrared spectroscopy techniques for a rapid and more comprehensive determination of foliar and litter chemical composition to provide a more information-rich index. 相似文献

The dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides spp. is responsible for paracoccidioidomycosis, the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America, causing serious public health problems. Adequate treatment of mycotic infections is difficult, since fungi are eukaryotic organisms with a structure and metabolism similar to those of eukaryotic hosts. In this way, specific fungus targets have become important to search of new antifungal compound. The role of the glyoxylate cycle and its enzymes in microbial virulence has been reported in many fungal pathogens, including Paracoccidioides spp. Here, we show the action of argentilactone and its semi-synthetic derivative reduced argentilactone on recombinant and native isocitrate lyase from Paracoccidioides lutzii Pb01 (PbICL) in the presence of different carbon sources, acetate and glucose. Additionally, argentilactone and its semi-synthetic derivative reduced argentilactone exhibited relevant inhibitory activity against P. lutzii Pb01 yeast cells and dose-dependently influenced the transition from the mycelium to yeast phase. The other oxygenated derivatives tested, epoxy argentilactone and diol argentilactone-, did not show inhibitory action on the fungus. The results were supported by in silico experiments. 相似文献

Timneh Parrots Psittacus timneh are endemic to the moist forests of West Africa. Concerns over rapid declines in populations due to overharvesting for the pet trade and forest loss prompted the species’ categorisation as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. Despite these threats, few data exist on their biology in the wild, impeding the development of effective conservation initiatives to protect populations. One of the few recorded breeding sites for this species occurs in the Bijagós Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau, where chicks have been historically harvested from nests and forest clearance for agriculture is common. We investigated the breeding ecology of Timneh Parrots in the Bijagós Archipelago focusing on two islands that harbour the densest populations. Specifically, we describe nest-site characteristics, breeding phenology and reproductive productivity. Timneh Parrots were found to use secondary nest cavities in 17 species of trees, predominantly nesting in trees between 20 m and 50 m in height. Nest cavities were generally aggregated, with a density of up to 14 nests ha?1 in some areas, although nests also occurred in isolated large trees. The distribution of nests likely reflected a heterogeneous distribution of large trees containing suitable nest cavities, emphasising the importance of protecting mature trees. Nesting efforts were initiated between early January until late March, suggesting that nest surveillance efforts to deter poaching can be efficiently focused at a small number of key sites during February to May each year, when fledgling chicks are most likely to be present. These data further suggest that the population may be limited by the availability of suitable nest cavities and that the installation of artificial nest cavities could help increase the breeding population. 相似文献
