Byssoonygena ceratinophila,gen. et sp. nov. a new keratinophilic fungus from Spain

Summary Byssoonygena ceratinophila, gen. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from two strains isolated, by hair bait method, from Spanish soils. The genus is characterized by ascomata with a hyaline and very thin peridium, and by ellipsoidal, brown, verrucose ascospores. A Malbranchea anamorph is also present.     

Keratinomyces ceretanicus sp. nov., a psychrophilic dermatophyte from soil

A patient presented with pain in the right lower back, radiating down the right leg. Initial pelvic X-rays did not reveal any lesion. A follow up computerized tomography (CT) scan and technitium scan showed a sharply lytic lesion of the right ilium extending to the right sacroiliac joint. Open biopsy revealed a granulomatous inflammation with many budding yeast from consistent with Blastomyces dermatitidis. Subsequent culture confirmed this identification. There was no other site of fungal infection. Two courses of Amphotericin B (each to 2 g total dose) failed to eradicate this infection. The patient is now responding to Ketoconazole.     

Keratinophilic fungi from soil of Tarragona,Catalunya

97 soils samples of Tarragona city and outskirts were analysed. We were isolated the following keratinophilic fungi: Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton ajelloi, Ctenomyces serratus, Malbranchea state of C. uncinatus, Chrysosporium tropicum, Chrysosporium evolceanui, Chrysosporium asperatum, Chrysosporium pruinosum (?), Auxarthron thaxteri, Gymnoascus petalosporus, Gymnoascus reesii, Chaetomium murorum, Chaetomium spirale and Chaetomium sp.
