Stomatal numbers of soybean and response to water stress   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The relationship among stomatal density, photosynthetic rate, leaf conductance, plant growth, bean yield and kaempferol triglucoside (K9) in the leaves of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) was examined in two field tests. K9 in the leaves was associated with reduced stomatal density, reduced photosynthetic rate, reduced stomatal conductance, reduced plant weight and lower bean yield. Plants with high stomatal frequency (lacking K9) were better able to take advantage of increased water supply by increasing stomatal conductance (upper surface), transpiration and bean yield. Plants with low stomatal frequency (with K9) were unresponsive to irrigation and in this sense were more tolerant of water stress, but their overall yield was low.  相似文献

A detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying the capacity of a virus to break the species barrier is crucial for pathogen surveillance and control. New World (NW) mammarenaviruses constitute a diverse group of rodent-borne pathogens that includes several causative agents of severe viral hemorrhagic fever in humans. The ability of the NW mammarenaviral attachment glycoprotein (GP) to utilize human transferrin receptor 1 (hTfR1) as a primary entry receptor plays a key role in dictating zoonotic potential. The recent isolation of Tacaribe and lymphocytic choriominingitis mammarenaviruses from host-seeking ticks provided evidence for the presence of mammarenaviruses in arthropods, which are established vectors for numerous other viral pathogens. Here, using next generation sequencing to search for other mammarenaviruses in ticks, we identified a novel replication-competent strain of the NW mammarenavirus Tamiami (TAMV-FL), which we found capable of utilizing hTfR1 to enter mammalian cells. During isolation through serial passaging in mammalian immunocompetent cells, the quasispecies of TAMV-FL acquired and enriched mutations leading to the amino acid changes N151K and D156N, within GP. Cell entry studies revealed that both substitutions, N151K and D156N, increased dependence of the virus on hTfR1 and binding to heparan sulfate proteoglycans. Moreover, we show that the substituted residues likely map to the sterically constrained trimeric axis of GP, and facilitate viral fusion at a lower pH, resulting in viral egress from later endosomal compartments. In summary, we identify and characterize a naturally occurring TAMV strain (TAMV-FL) within ticks that is able to utilize hTfR1. The TAMV-FL significantly diverged from previous TAMV isolates, demonstrating that TAMV quasispecies exhibit striking genetic plasticity that may facilitate zoonotic spillover and rapid adaptation to new hosts.  相似文献

Offspring food allocation by parents and helpers in a cooperative mammal   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:4
In cooperatively breeding species, helpers and parents commonlyface two decisions when they find a food item: first, whetherto feed the item to a young group member or to eat it themselves;and second, which offspring to feed. Little is known aboutthe factors that influence these decisions in cooperative mammals, though optimal foraging theory provides a basis for a rangeof predictions. In this article we describe pup feeding behaviorby helpers and parents in a cooperative mongoose, the meerkat(Suricata suricatta). When meerkat pups begin accompanyingthe group, they beg food from older group members, who digup dispersed prey items. As predicted, the probability of aprey item being fed to a pup shows a positive relationship with prey size and a negative relationship with pup distance.Meerkats apparently follow a "feed the nearest pup rule" andare more likely to feed the nearest pup if it is hungry. Hungrierpups beg more and follow older group members more closely.Across all age categories, females feed pups more frequentlythan males, both in terms of the relative frequency of feeds, and the proportion of prey biomass found by each individualthat is fed to pups. Females also feed female pups significantlymore than male pups, while males feed pups of both sexes equally. These sex biases in feeding contributions may result from femalegroup members benefiting more than males from higher pup survival, and in particular higher female pup survival, because femalesare the philopatric sex.  相似文献

Mechanisms underlying virulence properties of Campylobacter jejuni have historically been difficult to identify. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Hofreuter et al. (2008) show that C. jejuni's ability to metabolize glutamine, glutathione, and asparagine affects its ability to colonize specific host tissues. These findings reflect the emerging theme of bacterial physiology directly impacting pathogenesis.  相似文献

Using a parallel synthesis approach to target a non-conserved region of the PI3K catalytic domain a pan-PI3K inhibitor 1 was elaborated to provide alpha, delta and gamma isoform selective Class I PI3K inhibitors 21, 24, 26 and 27. The compounds had good cellular activity and were selective against protein kinases and other members of the PI3K superfamily including mTOR and DNA-PK.  相似文献

The effect of growth phase on the membrane-associated phospholipid biosynthetic enzymes CDP-diacylglycerol synthase, phosphatidylserine synthase, phosphatidylinositol synthase, and the phospholipid N-methyltransferases in wild-type Saccharomyces cerevisiae was examined. Maximum activities were found in the exponential phase of cells grown in complete synthetic medium. As cells entered the stationary phase of growth, the activities of the CDP-diacylglycerol synthase, phosphatidylserine synthase, and the phospholipid N-methyltransferases decreased 2.5- to 5-fold. The subunit levels of phosphatidylserine synthase and the cytoplasmic-associated enzyme inositol-1-phosphate synthase were not significantly affected by the growth phase. When grown in medium supplemented with inositol-choline, cells in the exponential phase of growth had reduced CDP-diacylglycerol synthase, phosphatidylserine synthase, and phospholipid N-methyltransferase activities, with repressed subunit levels of phosphatidylserine synthase and inositol-1-phosphate synthase compared with cells grown without inositol-choline. Enzyme activity levels remained reduced in the stationary phase of growth of cells supplemented with inositol-choline. The phosphatidylserine synthase and inositol-1-phosphate synthase subunit levels, however, were depressed. Phosphatidylinositol synthase (activity and subunit) was not affected by growth in medium supplemented with or without inositol-choline or the growth phase of the culture. The phospholipid composition of cells in the exponential and stationary phase of growth was also examined. The phosphatidylinositol to phosphatidylserine ratio doubled in stationary-phase cells. The phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylethanolamine ratio was not significantly affected by the growth phase of cells.  相似文献
