OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of deprivation on variations in general practitioners'' referral rates using the Jarman underprivileged area (UPA(8)) score as a proxy measure. DESIGN: Cross sectional survey of new medical and surgical referrals from general practices to hospitals (determined from hospital activity data). SETTING: All of the 183 general practices in Nottinghamshire and all of the 19 hospitals in Trent region. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relation between the referral rates per 1000 registered patients and the practice population''s UPA(8) score (calculated on the basis of electoral ward), with adjustment for the number of partners, percentage of patients aged over 65 years, and fundholding status of each practice. RESULTS: There was a significant independent association between deprivation, as measured by the UPA(8) score, and high total referral rates and high medical referral rates (P < 0.0001). The UPA(8) score alone explained 23% of the total variation in total referral rates and 32% of the variation in medical referral rates. On multivariate analysis, where partnership size, fundholding status, and percentage of men and women aged over 65 years were included, the UPA(8) score explained 29% and 35% of the variation in total and medical referral rates respectively. CONCLUSION: Of the variables studied, the UPA(8) score was the strongest predictor of variations in referral rates. This association is most likely to be through a link with morbidity, although it could reflect differences in patients'' perceptions, doctors'' behaviour, or the use and provision of services. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Trade-offs play a key role in species evolution and should be found in host–parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between host age categories.
2. The braconid wasp, Aphidius ervi , is a solitary endoparasitoid that allows its aphid hosts to continue to feed and grow after parasitisation. The hypotheses that host age influences their quality and that female parasitoids exploit their hosts based on that quality were tested under laboratory conditions using no-choice tests.
3. Aphidius ervi females accepted the aphid Myzus persicae for oviposition and their progeny developed successfully in all host ages. The fitness-related traits of parasitoids did not increase linearly with the host age in which they developed. Host quality was found to be optimal at intermediate host ages and the females preferred to parasitise these hosts. The shortest progeny development time and a more female-biased sex ratio were observed in hosts of intermediate age.

Rabbit polyclonal antibodies were raised to rat Kir2.0 (Kir2.1, Kir2.2 and Kir2.3) inwardly rectifying potassium ion channel
proteins. The antibody specificities were confirmed by immunoprecipitation of [35S]-methionine-labelled in vitro translated channel proteins and western blotting. Immunohistochemistry revealed a different
patterns of expression of Kir2.0 subfamily proteins in the rat hind-brain (cerebellum and medulla) and fore-brain (hippocampus).
Notably, only Kir2.2 protein was detected in the cerebellum and medulla, Kir2.1, Kir2.2 and Kir2.3 proteins were expressed
in the hippocampus and immunostaining was not limited to neuronal cell types. Anti-Kir2.1 (fore-brain only) and anti-Kir2.2
(fore- and hind-brain) antibodies showed positive staining in macroglia, endothelia, ependyma and vascular smooth muscle cells.
In contrast, anti-Kir2.3 (fore-brain only) immunostaining was limited to neurons, macroglia and vascular smooth muscle. These
results indicate that specific regions within the rat fore- and hind-brain have differential distributions of inwardly rectifying
potassium ion channel proteins.

Fine structure of aphid stylet routes in plant tissues in correlation with EPG signals 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Abstract. Plant penetration by Aphis fabae (Scopoli) was recorded by the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique and followed by stylectomy during wave-forms that were suspected of indicating sieve element punctures. The severed stylets in the plant tissue were subsequently processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and sectioned either transverse or longitudinal to the stylets. Two completely serially sectioned probes from the epidermis to the phloem were reconstructed.
In one probe the stylet pathway went to a sieve element and showed many empty branches of salivary sheath material. Breaks in cell walls filled with sheath material demonstrated that the majority of cells bordering the track had been punctured, which supports earlier evidence from EPGs. All types of cells showed punctures and the highest number was found inside the vascular bundle. Very few cells died, which would appear to be important for virus transmission, and in others cellular reactions remained limited to some callose formation. The route of the stylets was intercellular and passed through the secondary wall material. The role of pectinase in intercellular penetration, and previous evidence for intracellular tracks are discussed. Most sieve elements had been punctured but only one was eventually accepted. Thus, reaching a sieve element in a host plant does not automatically imply its acceptance though the reason remains unclear. Gelation of phloem proteins was shown in the stylet canal.

Ecological research has focused on understanding how changes in consumer abundance affects community structure and ecosystem processes. However, there is increasing evidence that evolutionary changes in consumers can also alter community structure and ecosystem processes. Typically, the effects of consumer phenotype on communities and ecosystem processes are measured as net effects that integrate numerous ecological pathways. Here, we analyze new data from experimental manipulations of Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata presence, density and phenotype to examine how effects on the algal community cause changes in gross‐primary production (GPP). We combine analytical tools borrowed from path analysis with experimental exclosures in mesocosms to separate the ecological and evolutionary effects of guppies into direct and indirect components. We show that the evolutionary effects of guppy phenotype act through different ecological pathways than the effects of guppy presence and density on GPP. As reported in previous studies that used a different measure of algal biomass, adding guppies and doubling their densities decreased algal biovolume through direct effects. In contrast to these previously reported results, exchanging guppy phenotypes that live without predators for phenotypes that live with predators did not affect algal biovolume. Instead, guppies from populations that live with predators increased the diversity of algal species and increased GPP compared to guppies that live without predators. These changes in the algal community were driven primarily by guppy phenotypes that live with predators—algal communities in mesocosms without fish were similar to those with guppies from predator‐free locations, but both were different from mesocosms with guppies from populations that live with predators. Changes in the algal community were driven directly by differences in foraging behavior between the two consumer phenotypes. We reconcile these results with our previous findings, thereby enhancing our understanding of the relationship between ecological and evolutionary processes. 相似文献

The cytologic diagnosis of Mycobacterium kansasi tuberculosis by fluorescence microscopy of Papanicolaou-stained specimens
The sensitivities of (i) Papanicolaou fluorescence, (ii) auramine rhodamine fluorescence, and (iii) Ziehl-Neelsen staining were compared for their ability to detect the atypical mycobacterium Myco. kansasi in cytological samples. Ninety-two cases were investigated, and the sensitivities of the three methods of detection were found to be 36.9%, 12.0%, and 20.7%, respectively. The control groups consisted of 30 specimens from cases of bronchial carcinoma and 30 of pneumonia. All cases were proved by microbiology. No false-positive results were recorded using Papanicolaou fluorescence. An important but coincidental finding arising from this study was that infection by the atypical mycobacterium Myco. kansasi causes cytological patterns corresponding to those normally associated with acute pneumonia and not to tuberculosis. 相似文献

1 The RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) was used to investigate genetic diversity of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum Walker, a pest introduced recently to Iceland. 2 This aphid in Iceland comprised two polymorphic populations, one in the east and the other in the west of the country. The genetic variation between sites within a population was continuous and appeared to be in good agreement with geographical distances. 3 In the eastern population the variation was greater between sites than within sites, whereas in the western population the pattern of variation appeared to be the opposite. This overall greater genetic variation in the eastern population could be due to its having been colonized earlier than the western one. 4 The study also demonstrated a close relationship between the green spruce aphid in Iceland and aphids from Denmark, which agrees with their assumed origin. Until recently, it had appeared that the septin family of proteins was restricted to the opisthokont eukaryotes (the fungi and animals and their close relatives the microsporidia and choanoflagellates). It has now become apparent that septins are also present in several other widely divergent eukaryotic lineages (chlorophyte algae, brown algae, and ciliates). This distribution and the details of the non-opisthokont septin sequences appear to require major revisions to hypotheses about the origins and early evolution of the septins. 相似文献
