An update on the distribution of Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in the southeastern United States

An update is presented on the distribution of the meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis) of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the southeastern United States. The parasite is widely distributed and common in all or much of Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. It is also common in the northern half of Alabama and Georgia. In contrast, it is rare or absent along the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina. It has been collected from a single deer in Florida.     

Deposition of type and voucher material from the helminthological collection of Elon E. Byrd

Elon E. Byrd was a prominent helminth taxonomist who published between 1930–1965. After his death in 1974, his collection was put in storage at the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. A recent examination of his collection yielded a number of taxonomically valuable specimens that should be available to research workers worldwide. This paper enumerates the specimens recovered and their deposition. Digenean families and genera represented are: Brachycoeliidae (Brachycoelium), Dicrocoeliidae (Paradistomum), Lecithodendriidae (Prosthodendrium, Pseudosonsinotrema), Microphallidae (Levinseniella), Ochetosomatidae (Dasymetra, Pneumatophilus, Renifer, Neorenifer), Plagiorchiidae (Leptophyllum, Paurophyllum, Stomatrema, Styphlodora), Proterodiplostomidae (Pseudoneodiplostomum, Pseudocrocodilicola), Spirorchiidae (Spirorchis, Henotosoma, Vasotrema, Unicaecum, Hapalorhynchus), Telorchiidae (Cercorchis); the Nematoda are represented by the Diaphanocephalidae (Kalicephalus). No attempt was made to determine current generic status or synonymies.     

Severe parasitism in an opossum.

Chronic debilitation and anemia were observed in a free-living opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) heavily parasitized by Physaloptera turgida, Brachylaima virginianum, and Cruzia americana. Chronic interstitial pneumonia associated with Capillaria aerophila and a metastrongyloid nematode also was present.     

Didelphostrongylus hayesi gen. et sp. n. (Metastrogyloidea: Filaroididae) from the opossum, Didelphis marsupialis.

Didelphostrongylus hayesi gen. et sp. n. from the opossum, Didelphis marsupialis, is distinguished from other genera of the Angoistrongylinae by the structure of the dorsal and lateral rays, complex gubernaculum, and ovoviviparity. Third-stage larvae developed in Mesodon perigraptus and Triodopsis albolabris. The prepatent period was 22 days in experimentally infected opossums.     

Anthrax epizootic in white-tailed deer

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.
