Feeding behaviour (time of attack on flake fish food) in Lythrypnus dalli was measured under pollution concentrations of 2.1 and 4.01mgl?1 total extractable material produced by a two‐stroke outboard engine. The variance of the times increased in pollution versus control treatments for both concentrations. No significant difference was found between the mean times of the control and 2.1 mgl?1 pollution treatments. A significant difference was found between the mean times of the control and pollution treatments for two different tests at 4.01 mgl?1. The combination of the increase in mean time of food attack and the increase of variance indicates that pollution concentrations lower than LD50 levels change feeding behaviour, and thus may indirectly effect the survival of the organism.  相似文献

The incidence of arm regeneration, effects of arm regeneration on non-regenerating body components and rate of arm regeneration were examined under field conditions. Approximately 60% of Luidia clathrata found in the upper portion of Tampa Bay, Florida were regenerating one or more arms. Individuals with two arms amputated at the disk edge took 380 days to regenerate completely. Both arms of an individual regenerated at the same rate. Length of regenerating arms initially increased faster than dry mass. No difference was found between non-regenerating and regenerating individuals for the dry mass of the body wall, pyloric caeca, and gonad of a non-regenerating arm. The absolute masses of the gonad and pyloric caeca were low through out the year possibly indicating a low food environment. Based on the rate of regeneration, arm loss just prior to the reproductive season may reduce the reproductive potential of this species.  相似文献

Color development of the Lowry protein assay was tracked over time for bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentrations ranging from 40 to 600 μg/ml. The time interval between 2 and 4 h produced the most stable readings. This time frame also improved linearity of the standard curve.  相似文献

The relatively complex pattern of temperature selection exhibited by juvenile lemon sharks Negaprion brevirostris in the North Sound differed markedly from many previously described responses of fish preferenda. Thermal data demonstrated that juvenile N. brevirostris did not attempt to behaviourally maintain a constant eccritic temperature. Rather, juveniles selected progressively warmer temperatures throughout the day until reaching the highest temperatures available, and then moved to cooler temperatures during late evening and early morning hours. It is possible that by exploiting habitat thermal heterogeneity juvenile N. brevirostris prolong activities such as feeding or digestion well into the cooler parts of the evening. The complex pattern of temperature occupation by juvenile N. brevirostris within the thermally heterogeneous North Sound nursery is probably linked to key daily activities such as prey capture, predator avoidance and digestive efficiency.  相似文献

Survival of adult female copepods and survival of eggs to 1-week-old larvae were assessed following exposure times of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 min of UV-B radiation (450 W cm–2). An increase in both adult and larval mortality occurred between the 45 min (12,150 J m–2 unweighted) and 60 min (16200 J m–2 unweighted) treatment levels of radiation. Rockpools on Loggerhead Key in the Dry Tortugas National Park experience cyclic tidal changes in water quality and physical dimension resulting in ichthyofaunal assemblages that differ markedly from the adjacent coral reef. Within the beach rock formations and areas transitioning to the nearby reef, we observed 45 fish species; however, only four species - schoolmaster, Lutjanus apodus, French grunt, Haemulon flavolineatum, cocoa damsel, Pomacentrus variabilis, and frillfin goby, Bathygobius soporator - were found in all rockpools. All fishes were transient juveniles except for frillfin goby, which was a pool resident. High temperature tolerance, (Critical Thermal Maxima), and low oxygen tolerance, (Critical Oxygen Minima) for schoolmaster, French grunt, cocoa damsel, and frillfin goby were 40.9, 36.2, 37.6, 40.9 °C and 0.56, 0.77, 0.50, and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. All four species demonstrated thermal and hypoxia tolerance values similar to those published for species traditionally noted as abiotic specialists. Although fish distribution patterns in rockpools were likely influenced by structural complexity and spatial limitations, the relationship between pool morphology and species richness was weak, suggesting that physiological tolerance to high temperature and low oxygen among reef fishes may be more influential in determining which species inhabit the rockpools. Harsh thermal and oxic conditions that cannot be exploited by less tolerant species may be beneficial for some Loggerhead Key reef fishes in providing refuge from predators, foraging grounds, or potential nursery areas.  相似文献

This study describes a behaviour of the brittle star Ophiopteris papillosa and tests two hypotheses concerning its possible function. During this behaviour an individual rapidly raises all five arms above its disk as the brittle star falls through the water column. The final position, with the five arms held tightly together above the disk, is termed the tulip position. Individuals in the tulip position fell faster, thus reaching the bottom sooner, than individuals not in the tulip position when tested in the laboratory. Individuals in the tulip position were consumed less frequently than individuals not in the tulip position when tested in the field. I conclude that the tulip position increases the likelihood of a brittle star reaching the protective cover of the bottom and escaping fatal predation.  相似文献

Nitrate impacts on the Florida apple snail, Pomacea paludosa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Nitrate pollution in springs in Florida has been suggested as a possible reason for declining populations of the Florida apple snail, Pomacea paludosa (Say). No correlation was found between snail density and nitrate concentration measured in six Florida springs. In laboratory studies examining short-term acute impacts of nitrate, adult and juvenile snail 96 h LC50 values could not be determined due to low mortality rates despite nitrate concentrations > 500 ppm. Juvenile snail growth was affected with EC50 values of 504 and 622 ppm nitrate, in two trials, respectively. Juvenile survival during the 14 d growth study fell below 50%, but again nitrate levels were very high (> 500 ppm). Given that snails exhibited little to no response to nitrate concentrations orders of magnitude greater than those found in Florida springs, we suggest that other factors, possibly including natural differences in habitat structure or changes in structure related to exotic plant invasions, may help explain the observed declines in apple snail abundance.  相似文献
