Abstract Porcine Escherichia coli strains isolated from cases fo postweaning diarrhea or edema disease were analysed for the presence of fedA , the major subunit gene of F107 fimbriae. The E. coli isolates were known to contain colonisation factor '8813', or to express F107, 2134P or other fimbriae, different from F4, F5, F6, and F41. PCR with fedA -specific primers, restriction enzyme digestion of the PCR product, and nucleotide sequence analysis demonstrated that 2134P pili, colonisation factor '8813' and fimbriae identified on Australian strains of the O141 serotype belong to one family of F107 fimbrial antigens.  相似文献

Information about the way of branching of dendritic arborizations may be obtained by comparing the frequency distributions of observed branching patterns with theoretical distributions based on well-defined growth models. Two models usually get much attention in geomorphological and (neuro)biological studies, viz. terminal growth and segmental growth. Formulae to construct the exact probability distributions for both growth models are presented. It is shown that ranking and lumping of the individual branching patterns enable the analysis of very large arborizations with relatively few data. The application of the Kolmogorov goodness-of-fit test for discrete distributions to the analysis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Dispersed pituitary cells from male African catfish, Clarias lazera, were fractionated in a density gradient of Percoll. Five fractions were isolated, consisting of about 6, 19, 39, 95 and 83% gonadotrops, respectively. The gonadotrops were identified by their ultrastructural characteristics, by immunocytochemistry, and by measuring their hormone content. After one day in culture, in each fraction the secretion of gonadotropin could be stimulated by a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue, indicating that the cells had retained their functional integrity. Since the regulatory mechanisms of different cell types from the pituitary have some similarity, purification of the gonadotrops provides a model to study the regulation of gonadotropin secretion.A portion of the results was presented as a poster at the XIIth Conference of the European Society of Comparative Endocrinology, Sheffield, July 31–August 5, 1983  相似文献

A 225-day-old male fourth generation rat from a developing recombinant inbred line (Lewis x Brown Norway) had a bilaterally symmetrical enlargement of the scrotum. Palpation indicated the presence of a firm lobulated mass extending from the tip of the scrotum to the abdominal wall. Bilateral nodular masses totally occupied the scrotal sacs, surrounded the testicles, and extended along the spermatic cords into the abdominal cavity. Tumor nodules also were present in the intestinal mesentery, omentum, mesenteric lymph nodes, pancreas, and lung. Histologically, the neoplasm presented a spectrum of characteristics varying from that of a granuloma with giant cells to a diffuse proliferation of spindle-shaped mononuclear cells.  相似文献

Biochemical evidence was obtained for an increase in acid phosphatase activity in the larval fat body of Calliphora erythrocephala during larval and pharate pupal instars. This observation is in conflict with published data indicating a decreasing enzyme activity in late third stage larvae. Centrifugation and filtration studies showed that the pH of the homogenisation medium has a strong influence on the solubilisation of acid phosphatase and its distribution in homogenate components. Differences in biochemical techniques including the pH value may explain the discrepancy between the published results and the present findings.The observed increase in acid phosphatase activity is related to the activity of the lysosomal system in the period immediately preceding pupal-adult apolysis.  相似文献

Testes of vitamin A-deficient Wistar rats before and after vitamin A replacement, of rats irradiated in utero, and of control rats were investigated by in vivo 31P magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy. The testicular phosphomonoester/ATP (PM/ATP) ratio ranged from 0.79 +/- 0.05 for testes that contained only interstitial tissue and Sertoli cells to 1.64 +/- 0.04 for testes in which spermatocytes were the most advanced cell types present. When new generations of spermatids entered the seminiferous epithelium, this ratio decreased. The testicular phosphodiester/ATP (PD/ATP) ratio amounted to 0.16 +/- 0.06 for testes in which Sertoli cells, spermatogonia, or spermatocytes were the most advanced cell type present. When new generations of spermatids entered the seminiferous epithelium, the PD/ATP ratio rapidly increased and finally reached a value of 0.71 +/- 0.06 for fully developed testes. Taken together, specific patterns of the PM/ATP ratio, the PD/ATP ratio, and pH were obtained that were correlated to the presence of spermatogonia, spermatocytes, round spermatids, and elongated spermatids or to the absence of spermatogenic cells. Hence, a good impression of the status of the seminiferous epithelium in the rat can be obtained by in vivo 31P MR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Two strains of rats (S3 and WEzob), which show different levels of aggression in the laboratory, were tested in repeated heterosexual confrontations. Daily 15-min observations were made of the interactions between a female throughout a complete estrous cycle and the same male partner. In both strains the topography of aggression was similar in males and females, but the frequency of specific parameters varied. Males showed more offensive and females more defensive patterns. The overall level of aggression was very low on the day of estrous, when the female was sexually receptive. There were no differences in any elements of female or male behavior between the other 3 days of the cycle. The results support previous conclusions from single-sex encounters that in rats there is no sexual dimorphism in the ability to show aggression.  相似文献

The effect of testosterone (testosterone propionate: TP) on intraspecific aggression in males and females of two strains of rats—WEzob and S3—was examined. Pairs of these rats, gonadectomized and treated either with oil or with testosterone propionate (TP), were tested in three different combinations: OIL against OIL, OIL against TP, and TP against TP-treated animals. Subsequently the effects of TP treatment of the subject and for the opponents interaction with sex and strain on the occurrence of diverse social + aggression behavioral parameters were determined. The results of the S3 strain indicate that testosterone treatment of either the subject or the opponent stimulates aggression in both males and females. No sex difference could be determined with respect to the incidence of aggression. In the WEzob strain a stimulatory effect of TP was shown in females but not in males. The absence of a clear stimulatory effect of TP in WEzob males in terms of changes in the total time spent on aggression, however, could wrongly suggest that TP does not affect aggression in these animals. The possibility of TP having an effect on these males in terms of increasing the intensity of fighting is discussed.  相似文献
