The population of bream in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to age, growth rate, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in 1994. That autumn the bream population in L. Peipsi consisted of fishes aged from 0+ to 15+. During the first year bream reached an average body length of 7.9 cm (the commercial legal size (30 cm) was usually attained by the end of the 5th–6th year. The condition of bream in this lake was above the average of Estonian lakes. The relatively good growth rate and condition of bream in the lake indicates that the waterbody is appropriate for this fish.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including nitric oxide (NO(*)), are associated with all steps of carcinogenesis. Hyaluronan (HA), a high-molecular-mass glycosaminoglycan overexpressed in a variety of human malignancies also has ROS-scavenging properties. We histochemically studied the level of HA in breast carcinoma cells and their stroma and compared it with the expression of NO(*) synthases (NOSs), major antioxidant enzymes, and nitrotyrosine. We also assessed whether the level of HA correlates with traditional prognostic factors of breast cancer and survival. Stromal HA level was moderate or high in all the samples studied (n=185), and 84% of the lesions showed HA-positive carcinoma cells. Intense stromal HA signal was associated with high neuronal NOS expression (p=0.009), whereas tumor-cell associated HA was inversely correlated with nitrotyrosine expression (p=0.027). Of the traditional prognostic factors, tumor cell-associated HA was correlated with poor differentiation (p=0.011), and high stromal HA levels were associated with aggressive features of the carcinomas such as large primary tumor (p=0.002), poor differentiation (p=0.019), and estrogen (p=0.012) and progesterone receptor negativity (p=0.009). High stromal HA level also significantly predicted poorer survival. The strong positive correlation between neuronal NOS and stromal HA could reflect NO(*)-stimulated synthesis of HA, an extracellular matrix alteration that favors breast cancer progression. Furthermore, it is suggested that, while acting as a scavenger of NO(*)-derived radicals, cell-associated HA undergoes partial fragmentation, release from receptors, and further degradation in lysosomes, and thus becomes undetectable in histological sections.  相似文献

Abstract

This article discusses the performance of adults who did and did not attend school in experiments involving the definition of concepts, the finding of word-pair similarities, classification, and language objectivation. Most of the differences described correspond to the differences between every day and scientific concepts identified by L.S. Vygotsky. The existing data are insufficient to determine whether all the qualitative differences listed by Vygotsky exist between units of verbal thinking in those who did and did not attend school. In some cases, the thinking of people who did not attend school exhibits features that, according to Vygotsky, should emerge only in school with the assimilation of scientific knowledge (language objectivation and the “super-empirical” connections between concepts).  相似文献

Metallothionein-3 (MT-3) is a brain-specific isoform of metallothioneins, which is down-regulated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), inhibits the growth of neurons in vitro, and differs from common MTs also in gene regulation. To elucidate the differences in structure and function between MT-3 and common MTs, Zn2+ and Cd2+ binding to MT-3 and MT-1 were studied using electrospray ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (ESI TOF MS) at pH values between 7.5 and 2.7. The metal binding properties of MT-3 differ considerably from those of MT-1. After reconstitution with a metal excess, metallated MT-3 exists as a mixture of Zn7MT-3 (or Cd7MT-3, respectively) and several metalloforms with stoichiometries below and above seven. In contrast, MT-1 exists as a single Zn7MT-1 (or Cd7MT-1). Lowering of pH leads to a stepwise release of metals from metallated MT-3, first from extra sites, then from the 3-metal cluster and finally from the 4-metal cluster. At acidic pH values the 4-metal cluster of MT-3 is slightly more stable than that of MT-1. The results demonstrate higher structural plasticity, dynamics and metal binding capacity of MT-3 than of MT-1, which makes MT-3 suitable as a zinc buffer-transfer molecule in zinc-enriched neurons functioning at conditions of fluctuating zinc concentrations.  相似文献

In the 1990s a sharp decrease in nitrogen loading occurred in Estonian rivers, bringing about a reduction of the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio (N:P ratio) in the large shallow lakes, Peipsi (3,555 km2, mean depth 7.1 m) and Võrtsjärv (270 km2, 2.8 m). The average mass ratio of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in Võrtsjärv (45) was about twice as high as that in Peipsi (22). In Peipsi, the N2-fixing Gloeotrichia echinulata, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Anabaena species prevailed in the summer phytoplankton, while in Võrtsjärv the dominant cyanobacteria were Limnothrix planktonica, L. redekei and Planktolyngbya limnetica, which cannot fix N2; the main N2-fixing taxa Aphanizomenon skujae and Anabaena sp. seldom gained dominance. In May–October the critical TN:TP mass ratio, below which N2-fixing cyanobacteria (Nfix) achieved high biomasses, was ~40 in Võrtsjärv and ~30 in Peipsi. The percentages of both total cyanobacteria (CY) and Nfix (CY% and Nfix%) in Peipsi achieved their maximum values at an N:P mass ratio at or below 20 for both TN:TP and Nmin:SRP. In Võrtsjärv, the TN:TP supporting a high Nfix% was between 30 and 40 and the Nmin:SRP supporting this high percentage was in the same range as that in Peipsi (<20), though the maximum Nfix% values in Võrtsjärv (69%) were much lower than in Peipsi (96%). The Nmin:SRP ratio explained 77% of the variability in Nfix% in May–October. The temperature dependence of Nfix% approximated to the maximum function type, with an upper limiting value at a certain water temperature, and this was most distinct in May–October. The critical TN:TP ratios obtained from our study (roughly 30 for Peipsi and 40 for Võrtsjärv) are much higher than the Redfield N:P mass ratio routinely considered (7). Our results represent valuable guidelines for creating effective management strategies for large shallow lakes. They provide a basis for stressing the urgent need to decrease phosphorus loading and to keep the in-lake P concentration low, and not to implement nitrogen reduction measures without a simultaneous decrease of phosphorus concentration.  相似文献

About 51500 specimens from 1542 samples, collected over the years 1954–1975 and 1986–1999 in different running water bodies throughout Estonia, were identified. Tubificidae prevailed in the material, with Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri forming about 40%. This species was followed by the tubificids Tubifex tubifex, Potamothrix hammoniensis, Psammoryctides barbatus, L. udekemianus and Spirosperma ferox, the naidid Stylaria lacustris, and the lumbriculid Stylodrilus heringianus. Two main ecological assemblages were distinguished: the pelophilous assemblage, dominated by L. hoffmeisteri, and the psammophilous one, where usually P. barbatus was dominant. The relationships between different species and the chemical parameters of water were usually weak but in contrast, correlated well with sediment preferences. In organically enriched reaches, L. hoffmeisteri usually dominated. The fauna of the streams of the islands was poorer in species due to their small size rather than geographical isolation. Some recent antropochorous Ponto-Caspian invaders have only reached the lowermost reaches of the two largest rivers. Some brackish water species were found in the mouth of the Pärnu River. No essential differences were found between the comparable sets of oligochaete samples collected in 1954–1975 and 1987–1997 in the Estonian running waters.  相似文献

Applications of permeabilized cell and skinned fiber techniques in combination with methods of mathematical modelling for studies of mitochondrial function in the cell are critically evaluated. Mathematical models may be useful tools for explaining biological phenomena, but only if they are selected by fitting the computing results with real experimental data. Confocal microscopy has been used in experiments with permeabilized cardiomyocytes and myocardial fibers to determine the maximal diffusion distance from medium to the core of cells, which is shown not to exceed 8-10 microm. This is a principal index for correctly explaining high apparent Km for exogenous ADP (200-300 microM) in regulation of mitochondrial respiration in oxidative muscle cells in situ. The best fitting of the results of in silico studies may be achieved by using of the compartmentalized energy transfer model. From these results, it may be concluded that in cardiac muscle cells the mitochondria and ATPases are organized into intracellular energetic units (ICEUs) separated from the bulk phase of cytoplasm by some barriers which limit the diffusion of adenine nucleotides. In contrast, alternative models based on the concept of the cell as homogenous system do not explain the observed experimental phenomena and have led to misleading conclusions. The various sources of experimental and conceptual errors are analyzed.  相似文献

Parasite-driven coevolution has led hosts to develop a complicated and potentially costly defence machinery, consisting mainly of the immune system. Despite the evidence for the trade-offs between immune function and life-history traits, it is still obscure how the costs of using and maintaining the immune function are paid. We tested whether immune challenge is energetically costly for white cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae L.) diapausing pupa. Individuals challenged with nylon implant raised their standard metabolic rate nearly 8% compared to the controls. Hence, costs of activation of immune system in insect pupa can be expressed in energetic currency.  相似文献
