Sixteen year-classes of longfin smelt, Spirinchus thaleichthys , show a consistent pattern of alternating year-class strength between even (strong) and odd (weak) years. A recent (1989) odd year-class grew as well as, if not better than, the late 1960s odd year-classes. However, fish in the even year-classes (1988 and 1990) were significantly smaller in size then the 1966 and 1968 cohorts. Associated with this reduction in growth of the even year-class fish is a decline in fecundity. Fecundity of the odd year-classes of smelt was also smaller than in the early 1960s. Mean egg diameter and gonadosomatic index were not statistically different between 1988 and 1989 year-classes but the relative fecundity was higher for the 1988 year-class than for 1989, suggesting a higher reproductive investment in the even year-class. Reduction in growth and associated reproductive traits is considered to result from a reduction in the abundance of mysids, a preferred prey species.  相似文献

The effect of chronic phostoxin administration on some tissue ATPases, hematology and tissue histopathology was investigated using a combination of gravimetric, enzymatic, colorimetric and histological procedures in New Zealand White rabbits after 2 weeks administration of 0.8mg phostoxin/kg body weight/day, po. The phostoxin treatment led to significant decreases in Na(+)-K+ ATPase activities in renal, hepatic and cardiac tissues. Similar decreases were obtained in the activities of Ca(2+)-ATPase and Mg(2+)-ATPase in liver. In addition, the phostoxin-toxified rabbits manifested significant decreases in hematocrit, red blood cell count, hemoglobin and platelets. Histological examination of the tissues revealed pronounced degenerative changes in liver, heart and kidney.  相似文献

Neomysis mercedis, an important invertebrate predator in somelakes and estuaries in North America, occurred at high densities(>2 mysids m-3) in Lake Washington in the early 1960s, aperiod when Daphnia were scarce in the lake. Because Neomysisfeed selectively on Daphnia, it was hypothesized that mysidpredation contributed significantly to the scarcity of Daphnia.To evaluate this hypothesis, mysid abundance was monitored inthe lake (July 1989–February 1992), and whole lake predationimpacts on Daphnia were estimated. Mysid abundance varied from319 million, 0.1 mysids m-3 (February 1992) to 4276 million,1.7 mysids m-3 ( June 1991), and mysid biomass ranged from 1153(October 1991) to 4700 kg dry weight (November 1990). A peakin Daphnia consumption was noted during autumn, when total mysidbiomass was high. In late autumn/winter mysid consumption month-1accounted for 28–95% of Daphnia biomass and 13–38%of production. Mysid densities in this study were 18x and 5xlower than in 1962 and 1975, respectively. By extrapolation,at a density of 3.5 mysids m-3 observed in the early 1960s,total Neomysis consumption demand month-1 exceeded 100% of Daphniabiomass (late autumn–early spring), and 100% of Daphniaproduction (late autumn–winter). Estimates of the totalmysid consumption demand in this study are thus in accord withthe hypothesis that Neomysis could control Daphnia abundancein Lake Washington.  相似文献

Physcomitrella patens is a monoecious, cleistocarpous moss which completes its life cycle under defined conditions in 7 to 8 weeks. Sexual reproduction is readily obtained by culturing gametophytes at 15 to 19 C. Mutants were induced by treatment of either spores or protonemal cells with ethyl methane sulfonate, N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and X-rays. Thiamine, para-aminobenzoic acid, niacin and yeast extract auxotrophs were obtained. Growth response to various supplements was studied in the auxotrophic mutants. Five yellow mutants and two morphological mutants were induced. The chlorophyll content of the yellow mutants is reduced 35-65% of wild type. The self-sterile, para-aminobenzoic acid-dependent mutant was used as the archegonial parent in crosses with a yellow mutant and a morphological mutant. The self-sterility of the para-aminobenzoic acid-requiring mutant appears to be pleiotropically related to the auxotrophic condition, since self-sterility does not segregate from nutritional dependence in progeny of crosses. On the basis of tests with heterozygous diploids obtained by aposporous regeneration of capsule cells, two mutant alleles were shown to be recessive to their respective wild-type alleles.  相似文献

Morphometric relationships, caloric content and biochemical composition of Neomysis mercedis were determined for freshly caught mysids. Strong positive correlations between telson length, carapace length, dry weight, energy content and total length are described by the equations: Ln (Dry weight) = –5.02 + 2.57* Ln (Total Length), Telson Length = 0.13* Total Length, and Energy (Calories) = –37.13 + 4.85* Mean Total Length. Energy (4.92 cal mg–1 AFDFW), ash (8.61% dry weight) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (10.6% dry weight) content are comparable to values reported for other species. A comparison of the length-weight relationship for N. mercedis with similar equations published previously for other mysid species indicated that the predicted mean dry weight at any particular length varied among species.  相似文献

Mutations in twenty-eight tryptophan mutants of S. coelicolor A3(2) were mapped relative to the nearest flanking markers. Mutants lacking single enzymatic activities for phosphoribosyltransferase, phosphoribosylanthranilate isomerase, indodeglycerol phosphate synthase, tryptophan synthase A and tryptophan synthase B were identified.  相似文献

Cladocera of coastal rivers of western Nigeria   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
Recent studies indicate that there are at least 100 species of Cladocera in the families Bosminidae, Chydoridae, Daphnidae, Macrothricidae, Moinidae and Sididae in the inland waters of Nigeria. Over 50% of these have been found in net plankton samples from the coastal rivers in addition to Evadne tergestina Claus (Family: Podonidae), and Daphnia barbata Weltner, hitherto unreported in the equatorial lowlands of Africa. In effect, the Cladocera of the coastal rivers and creeks consist of the marine/brackish assemblage made up of Penilia avirostris Dana and Evadne tergestina and the freshwater assemblage made up of all other Cladocera found. Unlike in the more inland water bodies, the freshwater assemblage of the coastal rivers is dominated by the Bosminids Bosmina longirostris (O. F. Muller) and Bosminopsis deitersi Richard. The distribution, seasonality and successional patterns of Cladocera in the coastal water bodies of Western Nigeria is presented.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the horizontal and depth distributions of Neomysis mercedis and longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) were examined using night-time mid-water trawl and Bongo net samples collected in Lake Washington from July 1989 to February 1992. Mysid density varied spatially, seasonally and yearly. For example, during summer, and fall (odd years), mysid abundance was highest in the northern, and lowest in the southern sections of the lake, except in December 1991 when they were uniformly distributed. In fall (November 1990), mysid density was highest in the central basin of the lake. Furthermore, in winter of even years, highest mysid density occurred in the southern region of the lake, but in the central region in winter (February) of odd year. Longfin smelt horizontal distribution also varied seasonally. For example, density of the 1988 YC smelt (1+) was highest in the northern area of Lake Washington in summer but highest in the southern area in fall. During winter, distribution seemed random. The abundance of the 1990 YC smelt (YoY) was also highest in the northern section of the lake in summer, but highest in the southern section in fall; density remained high in the southern section in winter. But, by late spring when they were more than one year old, the distribution had changed such that highest abundance occurred in the northern and mid-section of the lake. By winter when they were about two years old and about to begin spawning, density had become highest again in the southern section. These suggest extensive movement of mysids and smelt from one area to another, perhaps driven by wind-induced water currents in the lake. Depth distribution patterns of mysids and smelt are discussed. Smelt were captured mainly in the shallow strata (8 m) of the lake during all seasons except during winter when they predominated at 50 m. Mysids were also mainly caught in the shallow strata of the lake during all seasons, although a significant proportion occurred at greater depths (> 30 m). The abundance of both species was positively correlated in spring and summer but negatively correlated in fall. A poor correlation was observed in winter. Negative correlation in fall was primarily due to the occurrence of mysids and smelt in different areas of the lake whereas poor correlation in winter was particularly due to their occurrence at different depths. Because of considerable overlap in the distribution of both species in the lake, mysids face a high risk of predation by smelt. This piece of information is consistent with the hypothesis that smelt control mysid abundance in Lake Washington.
