Summary Large numbers of nuclear inclusions have been found in the nerve cells of the sphenopalatine ganglia of six healthy adult dogs. Their morphological characteristics are similar to those previously described elsewhere. The presence of simple and granular bodies in normal cells seems to support the hypothesis that these nuclear structures might be considered as normal nuclear organelles related to cellular metabolic activity.  相似文献

Summary Synaptic vesicle flattening can be induced in the excitatory mossy fibre endings of the rat cerebellum by prolonged immersion in aldehyde during fixation (with or without perfusion). The flattening is found in a greater percentage of vesicles if perfusion has been omitted before the prolonged immersion. This is discussed in relation to the various other factors that are thought to cause flattening and the important problem of the classification of different types of synapse.The author wishes to express his thanks to Prof. E.G. A thorough evaluation of hippocampal dendrites, axons and synaptic contacts has not been undertaken following prolonged periods of absence of corticosteroids despite the marked granule cell loss which occurs in the dentate gyrus of adrenalectomized rats. Thus, we have applied morphometric techniques to analyse the dendrites of granule and pyramidal cells, the mossy fiber system, and the number and morphology of synapses between the mossy fibers and the excrescences of CA3 pyramidal cells in rats submitted to different periods of adrenalectomy. In addition, to search for the presence of neuritic reorganisation in the hippocampal formation once normal corticosteroid levels were re-established, we incorporated in this study a group of rats replaced with corticosterone one month after adrenalectomy. The results obtained in adrenalectomized rats showed a striking impoverishment of the dendrites of surviving granule cells, subtle alterations in the apical dendritic arborization of CA3 pyramidal cells and no changes in the apical dendrites of CA1 pyramidal cells. In addition, in adrenalectomized rats there was a progressive reduction in the total number of synapses established between mossy fibers and CA3 pyramids, as a consequence of a reduction in the volume of the suprapyramidal part of the mossy fiber system, and profound changes in the morphology of mossy fiber terminals and CA3 dendritic excrescences. A remarkable reorganisation of neurites was found to occur following the administration of low doses of corticosterone, completely reversing the adrenalectomy-induced synaptic loss and partially restoring the morphology of hippocampal axons and dendrites. These plastic mechanisms provide a sound structural basis for the reversibility of cognitive deficits observed after corticosterone administration to adrenalectomized rats.  相似文献

The mossy fiber ending organelles of 4 rats and 4 pigeons were studied using ultrastructural morphometric methods. The number of agranular vesicles per square micrometer of synaptic surface, as well as the number of agranular vesicles per synapse, were found to be greater in the rat than in the pigeon, while no significant differences were found in coated and dense core vesicles. A highly positive correlation was found, in both species, between the synaptic surface and the number of agranular vesicles per unit volume of mossy fiber endings, while no correlation was found between the synaptic surface and numerical densities of coated and dense core vesicles.  相似文献

Abundant ectopic granule cells scattered in the cerebellar molecular layer have been observed in 30-day-old hypothyroid rats. Their morphological features indicate that they must be regarded as mature heterotopic cells arrested during their migration towards the granular layer. As their impoverished dendritic trees are identical to those seen in controls, it is unlikely that the lack of thyroid hormones played a major role in the deficient dendritic outgrowth. The study of 180-day-old hypothyroid rats revealed that although ectopic granule cells remained quite numerous, their number per unit surface was lesser than in the 30-day-old hypothyroid group. This finding may be related to the capacity displayed by heterotopic neurons to establish synaptic contacts with the components of the molecular layer. This was inferred by the presence of a peculiar synaptic cell investment formed by axosomatic and somatodendritic contacts in 180-day-old hypothyroid rats which shows that the surviving ectopic granule cells manage to adapt to an adverse milieu.  相似文献

The medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) plays an essential role in the coordination of behaviours and physiological responses necessary for reproduction. Since ageing is associated with a progressive deterioration of reproductive functions we have explored the possibility that changes in the structural organization of the MPN might be implicated in this process. Thus, we have estimated the volume of the MPN, and the total number and size of its neurons, using stereological methods, and quantitatively evaluated the dendritic trees of MPN neurons in Golgi-impregnated material. Male and female rats, aged 6, 24 and 30 months, were independently analysed. No cell loss was observed in aged rats of both sexes. However, the volume of the MPN and the somatic size of its neurons were remarkably enlarged in aged rats. No significant age-related changes in the size or shape of the dendritic trees or in dendritic spine density were found. To evaluate whether the changes observed in aged rats could be ascribed to an altered interaction between gonadal steroids and steroid-sensitive neurons, we have additionally estimated the to tal number of MPN neurons immunoreactive for the estrogen receptor-α. No significant age-related variations were detected. The age effects upon the MPN were more marked in females than in males and, consequently, the sexual dimorphisms in neuronal size and in the number of estrogen receptor-immunoreactive neurons were blunted in aged rats.  相似文献
