Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is typically caused by a single Aspergillus species, most frequently Aspergillus fumigatus. Here we report that a lung transplant recipient developed invasive aspergillosis due to a mixed infection caused by Aspergillus flavus and A. fumigatus. A method to sense the excitation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) on metallic grating device using the transmitted signal will be presented. The grating transmittance signal will be fully characterized varying the light incident angle and azimuthal grating orientation by means of the SPP vector model and rigorous coupled-wave analysis simulation. Simulation results will be compared with experimental measurements obtained with a 635 nm wavelength laser in the transverse magnetic polarization mode. The laser will light grating devices in contact with either air or water through a customized microfluidic chamber. A characterization of the diffracted rays will show the relationship between the grating coupling configuration and the Kretschmann one. In fact, the diffracted ray affected by SPP resonance is transmitted with an output angle which is the same incident angle that should be used to excite SPP in Kretschmann configuration. Lastly, the grating parameters (amplitude and metal thickness) impact on transmittance signal will be analyzed with respect to the order zero reflectance signal. 相似文献

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a non-muscular communication channel for persons with severe motor impairments. Previous studies have shown that the aptitude with which a BCI can be controlled varies from person to person. A reliable predictor of performance could facilitate selection of a suitable BCI paradigm. Eleven severely motor impaired participants performed three sessions of a P300 BCI web browsing task. Before each session auditory oddball data were collected to predict the BCI aptitude of the participants exhibited in the current session. We found a strong relationship of early positive and negative potentials around 200 ms (elicited with the auditory oddball task) with performance. The amplitude of the P2 (r = −0.77) and of the N2 (r = −0.86) had the strongest correlations. Aptitude prediction using an auditory oddball was successful. The finding that the N2 amplitude is a stronger predictor of performance than P3 amplitude was reproduced after initially showing this effect with a healthy sample of BCI users. This will reduce strain on the end-users by minimizing the time needed to find suitable paradigms and inspire new approaches to improve performance. 相似文献

Climate change greatly influences coffee production, especially in areas infested with plant-parasitic nematodes. In this study, coffee genotypes showed differences in their morphological and physiological characteristics when subjected to a water deficit and parasitism by Meloidogyne paranaensis. The cultivar IPR 100 had the largest superficial and volumetric root system area, even when parasitized. The two progenies (MG 0179-1 and MG 0179-3) and the cultivar Catuaí IAC 62 had a similar surface area (p < .05) when parasitized. However, the root surface area and volume of MG 0179-3 increased by 96% and 400%, respectively, when parasitized by M. paranaensis. On the other hand, Catuaí IAC 62 had a 31% reduction in root surface area. Catuai 62 and IPR 100 showed higher sensitivity to drought when parasitized because of the increased photochemical sensitivity and reduction in photochemical quenching. In MG 0179-1 and MG 0179-3, an increase in non-photochemical quenching occurred in response to stress, indicating that these progenies use a photochemical response to protect photosystem II. In this work, MG 0179-3, which is resistant to M. paranaensis, was remarkable because, interestingly, the infestation caused an increase in its root surface area. In addition, MG 0179-3 had relatively good photochemical performance under water deficit and M. paranaensis parasitism. 相似文献

Invasive aspergillosis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients, particularly in individuals with haematological malignancy and in haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. Nowadays, the galactomannan (GM) assay has been widely used as an indication of invasive aspergillosis, even though the test is known to generate false-positive results. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of GM and real-time PCR (qPCR) to detected Aspergillus in blood samples obtained from high-risk haematological patients. Haematological patients were screened twice weekly with GM testing, which was performed by the Platelia ELISA kit. An additional sample of whole blood (4 ml) was obtained for the purpose of qPCR testing. Sixty-four samples from 12 patients with haematopoietic stem cell transplant or haematological malignancy were studied. The overall accordance between GM and qPCR tests was 96.9 % (62 samples). Only two samples showed contradictory results, with positive GM test and negative real-time PCR results. Based on the high concordance between GM and qPCR in terms of negative results, the main utility of qPCR could be in the confirmation of positive results seen with GM testing. 相似文献

Emerging reports have associated chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD) with invasive aspergillosis (IA), particularly in patients treated with mechanical ventilation and/or corticosteroids. This is a multicentre study in which COPD patients demonstrating a new lung infiltrate while being mechanically ventilated were prospectively evaluated for the presence of IA. From the 47 patients studied, Aspergillus fumigatus was recovered in culture in two patients (4.2%). While serum galactomannan (GM) was negative for 94% of patients, GM levels in respiratory samples were >0.5, >1.0 and >1.5 for 74.5, 40.5, and 21.3% of patients, respectively. PCR was positive for 10 patients in the study but did not differentiate Aspergillus colonization from infection. The combination of PCR and GM in respiratory samples may be an interesting alternative to diagnose IA in COPD patients. 相似文献

The factors responsible for ALS-parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS-PDC), the unique neurological disorder of Guam, remain unresolved, but identification of causal factors could lead to clues for related neurodegenerative disorders elsewhere. Earlier studies focused on the consumption and toxicity of the seed of Cycas circinalis, a traditional staple of the indigenous diet, but found no convincing evidence for toxin-linked neurodegeneration. We have reassessed the issue in a series of in vitro bioassays designed to isolate non-water soluble compounds from washed cycad flour and have identified three sterol beta-d-glucosides as potential neurotoxins. These compounds give depolarizing field potentials in cortical slices, induce alterations in the activity of specific protein kinases, and cause release of glutamate. They are also highly toxic, leading to release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Theaglycone form, however, is non-toxic. NMDA receptor antagonists block the actions of the sterol glucosides, but do not compete for binding to the NMDA receptor. The most probable mechanism leading to cell death may involve glutamate neuro/excitotoxicity. Mice fed cycad seed flour containing the isolated sterol glucosides show behavioral and neuropathological outcomes, including increased TdT-mediated biotin-dUTP nick-end labelling (TUNEL) positivity in various CNS regions. Astrocytes in culture showed increased caspase-3 labeling after exposure to sterol glucosides. The present results support the hypothesis that cycad consumption may be an important factor in the etiology of ALS-PDC and further suggest that some sterol glucosides may be involved in other neurodegenerative disorders. 相似文献

The diagnosis of invasive fungal infections (IFI) remains a challenge, particularly for diseases caused by filamentous fungi
such as Aspergillus species. Unfortunately, many patients affected by these conditions are not identified before autopsy. Therefore, there is
a need for new diagnostic methods for IFI. Galactomannan is a soluble antigen released during hyphal growth in tissues. A
commercially available sandwich ELISA assay that detects galactomannan has been used in Europe for many years and is now approved
for use in the USA. The test has an excellent negative predictive value in the detection of invasive aspergillosis (IA) in
high-risk patients. In addition, it is more sensitive than culture and allows IA to be diagnosed before clinical manifestations
occur. However, false-negative and false-positive results in certain populations are the main limitations to its use. The
purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge about galactomannan testing in patients at risk for IA. 相似文献
