The permeability to water of the fibre cell wall of birch (Betulapubescens Ehrh.) and lime (Tilia x vulgaris Hayne) wood, wasmeasured in wood slices in which most of the void space wasfilled with paraffin wax or a polymerizing silicone elastomer. An osmotic technique was used with solutes of molecular weightgreat enough to prevent their molecules from penetrating thepores in the water-swollen cell wall. The solutes used weredextran and polyethylene glycol with molecular weights of 40000 and 6000 respectively. Values for permeability k x 1021, as defined by the Darcy equation, ranged between 3.6 m2 for the tangential direction in birch,to 27 m2 for the longitudinal direction in birch. These resultsare in good agreement with previously measured values but areat least ten times less than theoretical values. It is calculatedthat total emptying or filling of a wood cell through the wallmight be possible in as little as 5 min under a pressure differenceof 0.1 MPa if other flow pathways were blocked. A consumer panel comprising 60 females evaluated three coffee whiteners and fresh milk for a number of sensory attributes including liking of flavor and appearance, overall liking, natural flavor and odor, creaminess and watery flavor. Fourier analysis was used to produce a plot which readily identified the whiteners with sensory profiles most similar to fresh milk. More importantly, the whitener whose sensory profile was significantly different from that of fresh milk was identified from the Fourier plot, something which could not be done by traditional univariate methods or even by an overall discriminant analysis. 相似文献

Three brands of chocolate milk were evaluated for liking, sweetness, creaminess and natural flavor by 48 consumers, using 100mm line scale. The mean sweetness score for one brand was significantly different to the other two and all other attributes were similar. Discriminant analysis on scores from the line scales showed that 63.8% of the evaluations of the least sweet brand (Brand A) were classified by the discriminant function as belonging to the least sweet brand. 19.1% of the scores for Brand B and 17.0% for Brand C were classified as identifying Brand A. A simple count of the number of consumers ranking each brand as least sweet showed that 63.8% chose Brand A, 19.1% Brand B and 17.0% Brand C. This suggests that the discriminant function provides a measure of the proportion of assessors who can tell the difference or, a measure of the degree of confusion between samples. 相似文献

1. We examined the effects of prey abundance on patch selection by a benthic fish, the mottled sculpin ( Cottus bairdi ), in a fourth order, southern Appalachian stream (North Carolina, U.S.A.). This habitat is a mosaic of small (i.e. < 0.5 m2 ), relatively discrete patches.
2. Patches were characterized in terms of physical habitat variables, detritus (coarse particulate organic matter, CPOM) and macroinvertebrate abundance (number and biomass). We quantified patch selection by comparing the characteristics of patches utilized by sculpin with those of locally available patches. Locally available patches were selected using a constrained random sampling design (i.e. randomly selected within a 2 m radius from each fish). We also examined the relationship between macroinvertebrate abundance, CPOM and the physical characteristics of available patches.
3. Patches selected by sculpin contained significantly higher macroinvertebrate abundances (both number and biomass) than locally available patches in five out of six seasonal samples. Sculpin also occupied patches with significantly higher amounts of CPOM in three out of five seasonal samples. Patches utilized by sculpin, however, could not be consistently differentiated from locally available patches on the basis of physical variables. In addition, macroinvertebrate abundance was not consistently related to physical habitat variables or CPOM during the course of the study.
4. Our results suggest that sculpin are able to assess patch quality on the basis of prey abundance and select patches that potentially maximize energy gain. This behaviour may produce an increase in individual fitness, especially when prey distributions are not consistently related to habitat variables. Quantifying patch use in relation to prey abundance may help elucidate the causal factors determining habitat use by benthic fishes in other lotic systems. 相似文献

Abstract: Salamanders are important members of faunal communities in Appalachian Mountain (USA) streams, and the use of salamanders as bioindicators is increasing. Roads are a part of the modern landscape, but effects of roads on stream and streamside salamander diversity and abundance is not clear. We sampled streams in central West Virginia, USA, using quadrats placed along transects in the flowing channel, dry channel, and stream bank to assess salamander diversity, richness, and abundance during 2004. We used Akaike's Information Criterion for model selection at reach (i.e., above and below culverts) and stream scales. Salamander diversity and richness was affected by elevation, stream gradient, canopy cover, and the presence of roads. Overall, stream and riparian habitat quality was the most important factor affecting salamander richness. The presence of roads, stream gradient, and elevation received the most empirical support for predicting species' abundances. Roads benefited disturbance-tolerant species but negatively affected other species. Impacts of roads and culverts on habitat should be considered by federal and state transportation agencies and natural resources agencies during the planning process and addressed through mitigation efforts. Managers should install culverts that are as wide as the stream channel, at grade with the streambed, and dominated by rubble substrate to provide maximum benefit for salamanders.
