Differential growth rate between males and females, owing to a sexual size dimorphism, has been proposed as a mechanism driving sex‐biased survival. How parents respond to this selection pressure through sex ratio manipulation and sex‐biased parental investment can have a dramatic influence on fitness. We determined how differential growth rates during early life resulting from sexual size dimorphism affected survival of young and how parents may respond in a precocial bird, the black brant Branta bernicla nigricans. We hypothesized that more rapidly growing male goslings would suffer greater mortality than females during brood rearing and that parents would respond to this by manipulating their primary sex ratio and parental investment. Male brant goslings suffered a 19.5% reduction in survival relative to female goslings and, based on simulation, we determined that a female biased population sex ratio at fledging was never overcome even though previous work demonstrated a slight male‐biased post‐fledging survival rate. Contrary to the Fisherian sex ratio adjustment hypothesis we found that individual adult female brant did not manipulate their primary sex ratio (50.39% male, n = 645), in response to the sex‐biased population level sex ratio. However, female condition at the start of the parental care period was a good predictor of their primary sex ratio. Finally, we examined how females changed their behavior in response to primary sex ratio of their broods. We hypothesized that parents would take male biased broods to areas with increased growth rates. Parents with male biased primary sex ratios took broods to areas with higher growth rates. These factors together suggest that sex‐biased growth rates during early life can dramatically affect population dynamics through sex‐biased survival and recruitment which in turn affects decisions parents make about sex allocation and sex‐biased parental investment in offspring to maximize fitness.  相似文献

An inexpensive method for remotely monitoring nest activity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
ABSTRACT.   In studies of avian nest success, investigators often face the difficult task of periodically checking nest status while at the same time limiting observer influence on nest survival. Remotely monitoring nests using temperature data loggers is one method that allows for continuous data capture regarding nest status (i.e., active vs. inactive) without the negative effects associated with repeated nest checks. We used small temperature data loggers (Thermochron iButtons) to remotely monitor nests of Long-billed Curlews ( Numenius americanus ) in northeastern Nevada. Data loggers programmed to record temperature at 10-min and 20-min intervals were placed in curlew nests. Data loggers were set to collect data throughout the nesting cycle to determine onset of incubation and timing of nest failure. On average, Long-billed Curlews began incubating approximately 3 d after the first egg was laid and onset of incubation coincided with the laying of the third egg. iButtons allowed us to determine when incubation was terminated in 17 of 23 unsuccessful Long-billed Curlew nests, including 13 of 17 depredated nests. The presence of iButtons in Long-billed Curlew nests did not affect daily survival rate, egg hatchability or rate of nest abandonment. iButtons are an efficient and practical means for remotely monitoring nests of large egg-laying birds, such as the Long-billed Curlew.  相似文献

Plasma samples collected from spotted sandpipers during the reproductive season were analyzed for testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol-17 beta and progesterone. Prior to incubation, plasma testosterone and DHT levels were significantly greater in males than in females. Estradiol levels of paired females were significantly greater than those of paired males. Testosterone and DHT levels of unpaired resident and paired males were significantly greater than those of incubating and brooding males. A 25-fold decline in testosterone occurred in males from the 1- or 2-egg stage to the 3-egg stage, when incubation is initiated. In females, testosterone values were low in unpaired, brooding, and transient birds. Paired females had levels 7-fold greater than unpaired birds. In both sexes, there was a strong correlation between testosterone and DHT levels. Prolactin values were negatively correlated with testosterone and DHT in males. These results indicate that the high level of intrasexual competition for mates among female spotted sandpipers is not based upon a total reversal of the normal male/female levels of androgens and estradiol. Territoriality and intense competition for mates in females may be based upon enhanced receptivity of neural centers to moderate hormone levels. Relative changes in testosterone between unpaired and paired females indicates that this hormone may play a role in mate acquisition and territoriality of these sex role-reversed females.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory predicts adaptive adjustment in offspring sex ratio by females. Seasonal change in sex ratio is one possibility, tested here in two sister species, the Common sandpiper and the Spotted sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos and A. macularia. In the monogamous Common sandpiper, males are the most competitive sex. In each of 3 years, there was a change from mainly sons in early clutches to mainly daughters in late clutches. This seasonal adjustment of clutch sex ratio took place within the female before the eggs were laid, not by differential egg or chick survival. The sex of all eggs laid in the clutches used here was determined molecularly from chick blood taken at the time of hatching. The Spotted sandpiper in contrast is polyandrous, with partly reversed sex roles. There was no seasonal trend from sons to daughters in this species. When tested together, the two species differed significantly as predicted by the hypothesis of adaptive sex ratio adjustment by females.  相似文献

The role of salt glands in avian osmoregulation has been widely studied. Acclimation to saline habitats in aquatic birds involves increases in the relative size and complexity of the salt glands, and it is generally agreed that salt gland size varies as a function of salt loading, and is broadly correlated with habitat salinity. We report here salt gland sizes in three age classes of American avocet Recurvirostra americana chicks. Mean relative (mg/g body mass) salt gland masses for newly hatched (<24 h old) avocet chicks collected at a wetland supplied with pumped fresh water was 0.48 mg salt gland/g body mass. This value is comparable to the low end of published values for some strictly marine birds and similar to values for adult American avocets collected at saline lakes. These results suggest that American avocets, which are frequently raised in saline environments, hatch with salt glands that are large enough to cope with the osmoregulatory demands of saline environments.  相似文献

Reconnaissance for future breeding sites by spotted sandpipers   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3  
We studied the sex-role-reversed, polyandrous spotted sandpiper(Actitis macularia) from 1974 to 1990 in northern Minnesota,USA. After peak arrival of breeding birds and before peak departureat the end of the breeding season, there were many short-termvisitors (transients) to the study site. Stepwise discriminantfunction analysis (DFA) was used to determine the importanceof absolute sex ratio (males/female), sex of the transient bird,number of nests, and number of breeding males and females duringthe week of visit in predicting whether a visiting bird wouldreturn the following year. In addition, multiple regressionwas used to determine how much variability in the number oftransient birds returning in subsequent yearscould be explainedby annual values during the year of transience for numbers ofbreeding males and females, numbers of eggs laid and hatched,and absolute sex ratio. Annual recruitment of foreign adultsranged from 1 to 20 birds, of which 0–56% were seen visitingin previous years. Female recruits were more likely than malesto have been observed previously as transients. Twenty-two chickshatched at our study site returned and bred for the first timemore than 1 year after hatching. Of these, 9 (41%) were seenas transients between the year of hatch and breeding. The DFAshowed that transient females returned more often than transientmales and that the number of transients returning in subsequentyears was positively associated with the absolute sex ratioduring the week visited. When the sexes were analyzed separately,none of the weekly variables significantly discriminated femalereturn, but sex ratio was positively associated with male return.Regression showed that the number of transient birds returningin subsequent years was positively associated with the numberof male breeders at our study site during the year a bird visited.Percentage return the year after transience was positively associatedwith the number of eggs laid at our study site during the yeara bird visited. When sexes were analyzed separately, the higherthe number of female breeders during the year a bird visited,the greater the number of males returning in subsequent years,and greater numbers of breeding males were positively associatedwith transient female return. Based on our results, we suggestthat transient birds were searching for better breeding areasfor future breeding and that intrasexual competition made thisinformation more important to females than to males.  相似文献

We consider resource-defense polyandry and mate-access polyandryas female mating tactics in spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia).These tactics can be distinguished by the resource females defend,female interclutch movement, expected reproductive success aftermoving, and male and female dispersion. We examine these characteristicsrelative to patterns observed in a 17-year study of spottedsandpipers, a species traditionally considered resource-defensepolyandrous. On average, 26% of spotted sandpiper females eachyear were monogamous. Older females were more likely to be polyandrous,and polyandrous females of each age employed different matingtactics. Yearlings were typically sequentially resourcedefensepolyandrous. Two-year-olds were primarily simultaneously polyandrous,exhibiting equivalent proportions of resource-defense and mate-accesspolyandry. Older females were primarily simultaneously resource-defensepolyandrous. Females tended to stay on territories where theyand/or their mates had greater breeding experience (i.e., manyclutches laid for females, many clutches diat hatched for males);females that moved went to territories where their mates hada history of breeding success. Location changes between clutchesby polyandrous females were better described by breeding experienceon a territory than by age.  相似文献
