Dyscalculia, dyslexia, and specific language impairment (SLI) are relatively specific developmental learning disabilities in math, reading, and oral language, respectively, that occur in the context of average intellectual capacity and adequate environmental opportunities. Past research has been dominated by studies focused on single impairments despite the widespread recognition that overlapping and comorbid deficits are common. The present study took an epidemiological approach to study the learning profiles of a large school age sample in language, reading, and math. Both general learning profiles reflecting good or poor performance across measures and specific learning profiles involving either weak language, weak reading, weak math, or weak math and reading were observed. These latter four profiles characterized 70% of children with some evidence of a learning disability. Low scores in phonological short-term memory characterized clusters with a language-based weakness whereas low or variable phonological awareness was associated with the reading (but not language-based) weaknesses. The low math only group did not show these phonological deficits. These findings may suggest different etiologies for language-based deficits in language, reading, and math, reading-related impairments in reading and math, and isolated math disabilities.  相似文献

High density lipoprotein (HDL) stimulates excretion of excess intracellular cholesterol from cells, presumably by interacting with a cell-surface receptor. A 110 kDa membrane protein that is a candidate for the HDL receptor has been identified by ligand blot analysis. In this study we determined the cellular localization of this and other HDL-binding proteins and characterized their properties. The plasma membranes (PM) of cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells were labeled with trace amounts of [3H]cholesterol, and cell homogenates were fractionated on sucrose and Percoll gradients. Ligand blot analysis of homogenates of cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells demonstrated that cells contain multiple proteins that bind HDL3, including a major membrane protein with an apparent M(r) of 110 kDa and two minor ones with M(r) of 105 and 130 kDa. The gradient distribution of the 105, 110, and 130 kDa HDL-binding proteins mirrored that of labeled cholesterol and 5'-nucleotidase, both PM markers. Treatment of intact cells with the water-soluble cross-linker bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate abolished the HDL binding activity of the 110 and 130 kDa proteins but not that of the 105 kDa protein. These findings suggest that the 105, 110, and 130 kDa HDL-binding proteins are localized to the PM and that at least two of these proteins are exposed to the extracellular fluid. Solubilized 110 and 130 kDa proteins were retained on wheat-germ agglutinin and abrin lectin columns, showing that they are glycoproteins. The cellular localization and physical properties of the 110 and 130 kDa proteins suggest that they may play a role in binding of HDL to the cell surface.  相似文献

The endocrinological changes of the climacteric have been defined by studying the concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), androstenedione, testosterone, oestrone, and oestradiol in 60 normal postmenopausal women of different menopausal ages. The women were studied in six groups, according to the number of years since their menopause. One year after the menopause androstenedione, oestrone, and oestradiol concentrations were reduced to about 20% of the values recorded during the early proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle. At the same time the mean concentration of FSH had risen by a factor of 13-4 and that of LH by a factor of 3-0. Concentrations of both gonadotrophins reached a peak of 18-4 and 3-4 times the proliferative phase value respectively after two to three years, and then gradually declined in the next three decades to values that were 40-50% of these maximal levels. Testosterone concentrations remained mostly in the normal range for premenopausal women but were depressed to 60% of these levels two to five years after the menopause, and the mean androstenedione levels showed a significant increase in the same group of women. The concentrations of both oestrone and oestradiol remained consistently low for 10 years after the menopause, but oestradiol concentrations inexplicably increased in the last two decades, with levels at the lower end of normal range for reproductive women in six patients.  相似文献

Regulation of fatty acid activation was studied in whole tissue homogenates of rat heart. The palmityl-CoA synthestase activity was proportional to the fatty acid to albumin ratio in the incubation medium with maximal activity occurring at a molar ratio of about 5. Fatty acyl-CoA synthetase activity was inhibited by products of the reaction (AMP, pyrophosphate, and palmityl-CoA). The apparent Ki for palmityl-CoA inhibition was 5 muM and this inhibition could be relieved by CoA-SH or albumin. The Km for CoA-SH in the absence of palmityl-CoA was 7 muM and was increased to 24 muM by addition of 8 muM palmityl-CoA. Cytosolic and mitochondrial levels of CoA-SH and carnitine were estimated in whole tissue homogenates of heart and liver. From 90 to 100% of whole tissue CoA was recovered in the mitochondrial fraction of heart muscle and it was estimated that the cytosolic concentration of free CoA-SH probably never exceeds its Km value for fatty acid activation in this tissue. Therefore, the rate of fatty acid activation would be expected to depend on the availability of CoA-SH in the cytosolic space. By adjusting the concentration of CoA-SH in the cytosol to the rate of acetyl-CoA oxidation, carnitineacetyl-CoA transferase may function in cardiac muscle to couple the rate of fatty acid activation in the cytosolic compartment to acetyl-CoA oxidation in the mitochondria. Approximately 30% of whole tissue CoA-SH was located in the cytosolic space in liver. Heart muscle has about twice as much carnitine as liver but in both tissues 100% of whole tissue carintine was located in the cytosolic space. The ratio of carnitine to CoA-SH in the cytosolic space was estimated to be about 100 in heart and 17 in liver. This high ratio in cardiac muscle may function to channel fatty acids toward oxidation rather than toward synthesis of complex lipids.  相似文献

HDL subspecies Lp(A-I) and Lp(A-I,A-II) have different anti-atherogenic potentials. To determine the role of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) in regulating these particles, we measured these enzyme activities in 28 healthy subjects with well-controlled Type 1 diabetes, and studied their relationship with Lp(A-I) and Lp(A-I,A-II). LPL was positively correlated with the apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), cholesterol, and phospholipid mass in total Lp(A-I), and with the apoA-I in large Lp(A-I) (r >or= 0.58, P >or= 0.001).
