In this study the uptake by guppies (Poecilia reticulata) of 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) from sediment-free water was compared with uptake in the presence of suspended sediment. The results show that the influence of suspended sediment on the uptake of chlorobenzenes varies with test compound. For TCB uptake was not influenced by the presence of suspended sediment. This is probably due to the large amount of the chemical which is dissolved relative to the amount which is present in the sorbed state. For the more hydrophobic HCB, the concentration found in the fish from the system with suspended sediment was significantly higher than in fish from the control experiment.  相似文献

Levels of exhaled nitric oxide (NO) were determined in well-characterized atopic and nonatopic subjects on 4 days with a different level of outdoor air pollution. The two groups matched well regarding spirometric values, i.e., no difference with regard to FEV(1), FVC, and peak flow. On the 4 test days asymptomatic atopic subjects exhaled 1.5- to 2.4-fold higher levels of NO compared with nonatopic subjects. In both groups the increase in exhaled NO in response to air pollution was similar (2.5 times maximal increase, P < 0.01). In conclusion, atopic subjects exhale higher levels of NO compared with nonatopic subjects, but respond to a similar degree to increased levels of air pollution.  相似文献

Whole-body PET-scan studies in brains of tobacco smokers have shown a decrease in monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, which reverts to control level when they quit smoking. The observed decrease in MAO activity in smokers is presumably due to their exposure to tobacco constituents that possess MAO-inhibiting properties. The inhibition of MAO activity seems, however, not to be a unique feature of tobacco smoking as subjects with Type II alcoholism have been reported to show a similar decrease in MAO activity that reverses when they cease to use alcohol. The present review summarizes the data on MAO-inhibiting tobacco constituents and explains that the decrease in MAO activity observed in alcoholics is probably due to concomitant tobacco use. It is concluded that the inhibition of MAO by constituents contained in tobacco and tobacco smoke, enhances the addiction induced by tobacco smoking.  相似文献

1. Guppies exposed to several triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) concentrations in water died as soon as a body burden of 20 +/- 10 nmol/g fish was reached. 2. Accumulation of TPTC during exposure in acute toxicity experiments can be predicted by using the kinetic parameters of TPTC. 3. The lethal body burden is two orders of magnitude lower than for narcotic organic compounds such as chlorobenzenes.  相似文献

1. Hydrophobic compounds that are more easily biotransformed (e.g. PAHs) generally show less bioaccumulation in fish than the more persistent PCBs and DDTs. 2. In lake Nieuwe Meer, with the highest levels of organic micropollutants, the hepatic MFO activity was elevated in three fish species. This indicates that MFO activity might be a sensitive indicator for organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment. 3. Activities of the 3-MC type inducible isozymes were most pronounced in all three fish species studied. Though further research is required, indications for the existence of a PB-type inducible enzyme system have been demonstrated for two fish species, i.e. pike and eel. 4. Fish liver enlargement as a consequence of MFO induction could not be demonstrated in fish from the most polluted lake. 5. In fish, a correlation was observed between PCB or OCP tissue concentrations on the one hand, and hepatic MFO activities on the other. The low PAH fish/sediment ratios are further reduced when MFO systems are induced due to organic micropollution. The interrelationship between bioaccumulation and enzyme induction demonstrates the importance of an integrated study of these phenomena in field research.  相似文献

1. Reported LC50s of hundreds of chemicals and data of many enzymes in many fishes have been reviewed in order to find the hypothesized influence of biotransformation on acute toxicity. 2. Biotransformation of carbaryl was correlated and biotransformation of endrin was inversely correlated with acute toxicity. 3. For most compounds no correlation was found which indicates that either biotransformation is not important in acute toxicity or enzyme activities are not representative parameters to quantify biotransformation reactions.  相似文献
