Aim To develop a physiologically based model of the plant niche for use in species distribution modelling. Location Europe. Methods We link the Thornley transport resistance (TTR) model with functions which describe how the TTR’s model parameters are influenced by abiotic environmental factors. The TTR model considers how carbon and nutrient uptake, and the allocation of these assimilates, influence growth. We use indirect statistical methods to estimate the model parameters from a high resolution data set on tree distribution for 22 European tree species. Results We infer, from distribution data and abiotic forcing data, the physiological niche dimensions of 22 European tree species. We found that the model fits were reasonable (AUC: 0.79–0.964). The projected distributions were characterized by a false positive rate of 0.19 and a false negative rate 0.12. The fitted models are used to generate projections of the environmental factors that limit the range boundaries of the study species. Main conclusions We show that physiological models can be used to derive physiological niche dimensions from species distribution data. Future work should focus on including prior information on physiological rates into the parameter estimation process. Application of the TTR model to species distribution modelling suggests new avenues for establishing explicit links between distribution and physiology, and for generating hypotheses about how ecophysiological processes influence the distribution of plants. 相似文献

Bacteria-assisted bioremediation is widely recognized as a low-cost method to minimize the consequences of soil pollution with toxic metals originating from industrial sites. Strains used in bioremediation have to deal with high metal load via biosorption, reduction, bioprecipitation, metal sequestration, and/or chelation. Actinobacteria, and streptomycetes in particular, are considered a perspective group for bioremediation as natural soil inhabitants with extensive secondary metabolism. Nevertheless, there is no reference information on survival of the model streptomycetes in the presence of the most abundant metal pollutants. Also, there are no reports describing the selection approaches towards improvement of bioremediation properties. In this work, the resistance of Streptomyces coelicolor M145 and Streptomyces sioyaensis Lv81 to certain transition metals and their growth under different pH values are described for the first time. Spontaneous chromate-resistant S. sioyaensis Lv81-138 strain was selected in the course of this work. Strain Lv81-138 is the most efficient actinobacterial Cr(VI) reducer reported so far, capable of converting 12 mmol/L of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) in a medium supplemented with 50 mmol/L K2CrO4. 相似文献

To determine whether vision returns to its original state following eye removal in Achatina fulica, light and electron microscope examinations, electrophysiological recordings and behavioural tests were carried out on the regenerating snails. Reparative morphogenesis can result in the restoration of the peripheral sense organ even in the absence of complete regrowth of the tentacle, but it can also lead to the formation of aberrant regenerates. We found that anatomically and ultrastructurally the eyes of the ‘most normal’ regenerates were basically the same as the original eyes. Under normal conditions each eye is composed of a principal and an accessory eye, both sharing a common cornea. The only difference between regenerated and native eyes is the smaller size of the former, as a result of a reduced number of retinal cells. Electroretinographic responses revealed that the molecular mechanism of phototransduction is restored, in principle, but that flicker fusion frequency in the regenerated eye is significantly lower than in the normal eye. The directional movement to a visual stimulus (a black stripe of 45° width) had not completely recovered even 6 months after amputation. This suggests that the central projections of the optic nerve had not become fully re‐established at the time of testing. 相似文献

Summary The 550-day semicontinuous cultivation of Claviceps fusiformis immobilized in calcium alginate is documented. The vegetative mycelium from seed or from early-production submerged culture is the best choice for immobilization. No extracellular glucans are produced by immobilized cells. Immobilized spores give low yields of clavine alkaloids. Alginate concentrations in a range of 2%–4% do not influence yield and spectrum of alkaloids. The cytoplasm of the immobilized cells becomes condensed (after 3 days), polysaccharides disappear, and centres of lipid synthesis are formed in the cytoplasm. After 60 days the cells harbour a great number of lipid particles, mitochondria are diminishing and their cristae partly disappear, indicating a decreased respiration capacity. After 350–500 days the volume of most cells is increased many times and the cells are filled with large oval bodies of electrondense material. Chloramphenicol protects immobilized cultures against bacterial contamination. 相似文献

Between 1981–83 the gut contents ofDaphnia galeata, D. cucullata, Eudiaptomus gracilis, andCyclops vicinus were examined with light and scanning electron microscope to obtain information on the feeding of these species in Lake Balaton.
The twoDaphnia species feed mainly on abioseston, and it is assumed that their primary nutrient source was organic matter adsorbed onto
the surfaces of the abioseston granules plus bacteria and detritus.E. gracilis feeds on algae, showing a preference for green algae and diatoms.C. vicinus is also a prodigious consumer of algae in Lake Balaton, utilizing the whole size spectrum of phytoplankton.
Concerning the trophic relationships between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Lake Balaton, that between diatoms and bothE. gracilis andC. vicinus is the most conspicouos. Convincing evidence for an extensive utilization of blue-green algae was not found. Though there

Chronic hyperphenylalaninemia maintained with the aid of a suppressor of phenylalamine hydroxylase, -methylphenylalanine, increases the glycine concentration and the phosphoserine phosphatase activity of the developing rat brain but not that of liver or kidney. Similar increases occur after daily injections with large doses of phenylalanine alone, while tyrosine, isoleucine, alanine, proline, and threonine, were without effect. Treatment with methionine, which increases the phosphoserine phosphatase activity of the brain and lowered that of liver and kidney, left the cerebral glycine level unchanged. When varying the degrees of gestational or early postnatal hyperphenylalaninemia, a significant linear correlation was found between the developing brains' phosphoserine phosphatase and glycine concentration. Observations on the uptake of injected glycine and its decline further indicate that coordinated rises in the brain's phosphoserine phosphatase and glycine content associated with experimental hyperphenylalaninemia denote a direct impact of phenylalanine on the intracellular pathway of glycine synthesis in immature animals. 相似文献

Among mutants of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) studied which were sensitive to chloramphenicol (Cmls), strains sensitive to a number of antibiotics (ristomycin, tetracycline, polymyxin, lincomycin) amount of 46%. Antibiotic-sensitive mutants are capable to form different classes of resistant revertants with frequency varying from 10(-2) to 10(-6) in independent strains. Ristomycin-sensitive clones (Rims) have been found to occur with high frequency in Cmls strains and Cmlr revertants. Mutations mediating the Rims phenotype are mapped in a locus linked to the gene for resistance to chloramphenicol. The results obtained are discussed, in accordance with the notion about possible role of cml mutation in induction of secondary mutational changes in the genome of S. coelicolor A3(2). 相似文献
