Investigation of the helicon discharge plasma parameters in a hybrid RF plasma system

Results of an experimental study of the helicon discharge plasma parameters in a prototype of a hybrid RF plasma system equipped with a solenoidal antenna are described. It is shown that an increase in the external magnetic field leads to the formation of a plasma column and a shift of the maximum ion current along the discharge axis toward the bottom flange of the system. The shape of the plasma column can be controlled via varying the configuration of the magnetic field.     

Genetic analysis of biochemical differences of Yersinia pestis strains

Literature data and results of our experimental studies on genetic base of biochemical differentiation of Yersinia pestis strains of various subspecies and biovars are summarized in the review. Data on variability of genes coding biochemical features (sugar and alcohol fermentation, nitrate reduction), the differential development of which are the base of existing phenotypic schemes of Y. pestis strains classification, are presented. Variability of these genes was shown to have possible use for the development of genetic classification of Y. pestis strains of various subspecies and biovars.     

An essential saccharide binding domain for the mAb 2C7 established for Neisseria gonorrhoeae LOS by ES-MS and MSn

A study of bacterial surface oligosaccharides were investigated among different strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to correlate structural features essential for binding to the MAb 2C7. This epitope is widely expressed and conserved in gonococcal isolates, characteristics essential to an effective candidate vaccine antigen. Sample lipooligosaccharides (LOS), was prepared by a modification of the hot phenol-water method from which de-O-acetylated LOS and oligosaccharide (OS) components were analyzed by ES-MS-CID-MS and ES-MSnin a triple quadrupole and an ion trap mass spectrometer, respectively. Previously documented natural heterogeneity was apparent from both LOS and OS preparations which was admixed with fragments induced by hydrazine and mild acid treatment. Natural heterogeneity was limited to phosphorylation and antenni extensions to the alpha-chain. Mild acid hydrolysis to release OS also hydrolyzed the beta(1-->6) glycosidic linkage of lipid A. OS structures were determined by collisional and resonance excitation combined with MS and multistep MSn which provided sequence information from both neutral loss, and nonreducing terminal fragments. A comparison of OS structures, with earlier knowledge of MAb binding, enzyme treatment, and partial acid hydrolysis indicates a generic overlapping domain for 2C7 binding. Reoccurring structural features include a Hepalpha(1-->3)Hepbeta(1-->5)KDO trisaccharide core branched on the nonreducing terminus (Hep-2) with an alpha(1-->2) linked GlcNAc (gamma-chain), and an alpha-linked lactose (beta-chain) residue. From the central heptose (Hep-1), a beta(1-->4) linked lactose (alpha-chain), moiety is required although extensions to this residue appear unnecessary.      

Acid glycosaminoglycans and their chemical modification

The modern state of chemical modification of hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfates, and heparin is considered, and the possible application of modified glycosaminoglycans as potential drugs is discussed.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of quinopimaric and maleopimaric acids

A number of nitrogen-, bromine-, and sulfur-containing derivatives of diene adducts of levopimaric acid have been synthesized. The testing of the compounds on Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria has shown that the compounds possess a weak antimicrobial activity.     

Synthesis of 7,8α-dihydro-14α-deoxyecdysteroids

A Pd-C-catalyzed hydrogenation in methanol and in the presence of sodium methylate is a simple, convenient and high yielding reduction method to convert the 7,14-dien-6-one ecdysteroids to their corresponding 7,8α-dihydro-14α-deoxyecdysteroids.     

Racemic and optically active alpha-tocopherol analogues with a modified side chain: synthesis and biological activity

Information on the synthesis and biological activity of natural and synthetic analogues of alpha-tocopherol with a modified side chain is systematized. These compounds are of interest as vitamin E metabolites, hydrophilic antioxidants, and precursors of drugs with combined pharmacological properties useful in therapy of pathological disorders caused by oxidative stress.
