A new species of fossil Tubulidentata has been found by the Mission Paléoanthropologique Franco-Tchadienne in Northern Chad. It is the first fossil Orycteropodidae (aardvark) from the Mio-Pliocene of Central Africa. The new taxon, Orycteropus abundulafus sp. nov. , is considered in the framework of the available Orycteropodidae fossil record. The Chadian specimen is characterized by the highest dental robustness index among all Tubulidentata, the presence of crests on the pterygoid, the triangular-shaped olecranon fossa and the reduction of the deltoid crest. All of these characters are linked to a less fossorial animal that had a tougher diet. This new African species is closer to the Eurasian O. gaudryi than to any other Tubulidentata. Together they form a clade distinct from that which includes O. afer . This is the first evidence of a relationship for aardvarks between Africa and Eurasia. An initial step is made towards revision of the phylogeny of the order.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 109–131.  相似文献

Abstract.  Parasites can reduce host fitness through short-term mortality, complete or partial castration, or slight reductions in host fecundity. Hosts may reduce reproductive effort as an adaptive strategy to tolerate parasitism. However, host fitness reduction may be unrelated to host adaptation but represent a pathological side-effect of infection. The present study evaluates experimentally the direct and indirect impact of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi on the investment of female kissing bugs in reproductive tissue. The presence of the parasite decreases gonad weight but this effect disappears when body size is included as covariate. To examine in more detail the set of causal relationships involved, a structural equation modelling analysis is performed using body size, moulting time and nutrition as predictor variables on gonad weight in the presence and absence of the protozoan. The results obtained indicate that, irrespective of the pathway and status of infection, female kissing bugs showing a slow development tend to have lighter gonads. On the other hand, the importance of blood ingestion for gonad weight is dependent on body size and contingent on the status of infection. Uninfected individuals tend to invest more in reproductive tissue when ingesting more blood during their ontogeny, and the opposite situation is observed for infected insects. These results indicate that gonad weight reduction in T. cruzi -infected Mepraia spinolai (Porter, 1934) is a consequence of nutrition curtailment and body size reduction rather than an adaptive strategy to cope with infection.  相似文献

Late Miocene Carnivora from Chad: Lutrinae (Mustelidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe extensive Late Miocene fossil Lutrinae from Toros-Menalla, Chad. A minimum of four species are present in this fossiliferous area. Such a large number of species, diverse in size and dental morphology, is significant and unique in the fossil record of the subfamily Lutrinae in the Neogene of Africa. Two new taxa are described, Sivaonyx beyi sp. nov. and Djourabus dabba gen. nov. sp. nov. ; the two other species, which are represented by more fragmentary remains, are assigned to Lutrinae indet. aff. Torolutra sp. and Lutrinae indet. aff. Aonyx sp. Sivaonyx beyi is the best known of the species. It is represented by many dental remains and a subcomplete skeleton. Postcranial characters of this species are not particularly specialized. It is interpreted here as a terrestrial predator with poorly developed aquatic adaptations. Fossils of otters are known from ten different localities at Toros-Menalla, each of which yielded a single individual of one or two species. The presence of four morphologically distinct otters in the area is indicative of a palaeoenvironment with a relatively well-developed freshwater system of lakes and/or rivers.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 793–846.  相似文献

Polypterus faraou sp. nov. (Cladistia, Polypteridae) from the Late Miocene of Toros-Menalla (western Djourab, Chad) is described on the basis of a subcomplete articulated skeleton preserved in three dimensions. This is the first time such a complete fossil polypterid skeleton has been described. It is the only verifiable fossil record for the genus Polypterus . P. faraou closely resembles P. bichir and P. endlicheri , extant fish found in the Chad–Chari system. Intrarelationships among the polypterids are not yet resolved: however, P. faraou shows a primitive shape of the body and a primitive shape of the opening of the lateral line on the scales, similar to that of three living species ( P. bichir , P. endlicheri and P. ansorgii ).  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 146 , 227–237.  相似文献

Abstract:  Semlikiichthys is a fossil genus of perciform fish from the Neogene continental deposits of Africa. Until now, it was known in Mio-Pliocene sites of the Great Lake Region and of the River Nile by a single species, S. rhachirhinchus . Here, we describe new Semlikiichthys material recovered from Central Africa (Upper Miocene of Toros-Menalla, western Djurab, Chad), and compare it to S. rhachirhinchus , which is the only known species of the genus, and also with Lates niloticus , which is the fish in African Neogene deposits that most closely resembles it. We attribute the Chadian material to Semlikiichthys darsao sp. nov., based on ten osteological characters of the neurocranium, the maxilla, the dentary and the first vertebra. Our comparative anatomical study also enables us to provide a revised diagnosis for the genus and to reconsider the taxonomic attribution of the fossils assigned to it. Furthermore, the fossil record of Semlikiichthys supports a connection between sub-basins of the Nilo-Sudanese region during the Miocene, and a disruption between the Great Lake and the Nile Basin on the one hand and the Chadian Basin on the other before 7 Ma.  相似文献
