  • 1 The genus Castor comprises two species: the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber, and the North American beaver Castor canadensis. Both species suffered from overexploitation, but have seen a revival since the 1920s due to increased protection and reintroduction programmes. Increases in the populations and distributions of species that are able to modify ecosystems have generated much scientific interest. Here we review the available literature concerning the possible ecological impact of beaver species in the Old and New World.
  • 2 Beavers, being ecosystem engineers, are among the few species besides humans that can significantly change the geomorphology, and consequently the hydrological characteristics and biotic properties of the landscape. In so doing, beavers increase heterogeneity, and habitat and species diversity at the landscape scale. Beaver foraging also has a considerable impact on the course of ecological succession, species composition and structure of plant communities, making them a good example of ecologically dominant species (e.g. keystone species).
  • 3 Nevertheless, the strength of beavers’ impact varies from site to site, depending on the geographical location, relief and the impounded habitat type. Consequently, they may not be significant controlling agents of the ecosystem in all parts of their distribution, but have strong interactions only under certain circumstances. We suggest that beavers can create important management opportunities in the Holarctic, and this review will help land managers determine the likely outcome of beaver activity.

Several unanswered questions remain regarding the taxonomy and phylogeny of inquiline gallwasps (Cynipidae: Synergini), obligate inhabitants of plant galls induced primarily by other gallwasps (Cynipidae: Cynipini and Diplolepidini). Here we use morphological and molecular data to revise the inquiline genus Synophrus, members of which are notable for extensively modifying the structure of galls induced by oak gallwasp hosts on oaks in the section Cerris of Quercus subgenus Quercus in the Western Palaearctic. Previous taxonomic treatments have recognized three Western Palaearctic species of Synophrus: S. pilulae, S. politus and S. olivieri. Our results support the establishment of four additional Western Palaearctic species: Synophrus hungaricus sp.n. , S. libani sp.n. , S. syriacus sp.n. and S. hispanicus sp.n. We describe and diagnose these new taxa, analyse their phylogenetic relationships, and show that Synophrus inquilines are able to impose their own gall phenotypes on those of their hosts. Bordy, E.M., Sztanó, O., Rubidge, B.S. & Bumby, A. 2010: Early Triassic vertebrate burrows from the Katberg Formation of the south‐western Karoo Basin, South Africa. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 33–45. Very large (~30–35 cm), uniform diameter cylindrical burrows were found at two localities, ~100–110 m above Permo‐Triassic boundary in the fluvial Katberg Formation (main Karoo Basin, South Africa). Analysis of their morphology and stratigraphical distribution allows us to improve both the understanding of the ethology of burrowing, and also the reconstruction of the earliest Triassic ecosystems. These burrows have a single opening that leads, via a large, uniform diameter, semi‐horizontal tunnel, to a rounded terminus. These 3‐m‐long structures descend at angles of ~30° to a maximum of 1.5 m depth. They are devoid of chambers, branching, cross‐cutting, coiling or spiralling. Filled with coarse sediments, some have a <5‐mm clay lining, and most have subtle indentations and various scratch marks. These burrows were possibly excavated as resting, hiding or aestivating shelters, and are tentatively attributed to dicynodonts (i.e. Lystrosaurus murrayi and L. declivis). Data suggest that burrowing was widespread after the P/Tr boundary event, when in this part of Gondwana, dryland fluvial systems had large fluctuations in flow with extended low‐flow periods or drought punctuated by high‐discharge periods. We hypothesize that these constructed refuges played a role in the biodiversity recovery and maintenance in the Early Triassic (Induan) ecosystem. □Early Triassic, Karoo Basin, Katberg Formation, South Africa, Tetrapod Burrows.  相似文献

TT-232 is a structural analogue of somatostatin exhibiting strong and selective growth-inhibitory effects, inhibition of neurogenic inflammation, as well as general anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential without the wide-ranging endocrine side effects of the parent hormone and its “traditional” analogues. The anti-inflammatory action of TT-232 is mediated through the SSTR4 receptor, and its antitumor activity is mediated through the SSTR1 receptor and by the tumor-specific isoform of pyruvate kinase. Its mechanism of action is in line with a new era of molecular medicine called signal transduction therapy, where “false” intracellular or intercellular communication is inhibited or corrected without interfering with basic cell functions and machinery. TT232 has passed phase I clinical trials without toxicity and significant side effects, and phase II studies are running for oncological and anti-inflammatory indications, respectively. This compound has the perspective to become the first drug in molecularly targeted therapy of inflammation where a combined effect of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neurogenic inflammation-inhibiting activity can be achieved.  相似文献
