Although the basic mechanism of cell cycle control is conservedamong eukaryotes, its regulation differs in each type of organism.Plants have unique developmental features that distinguish themfrom other eukaryotes. These include the absence of cell migration,the formation of organs throughout the entire life-span fromspecialized regions called meristems, and the potency of non-dividingcells to re-enter the cell cycle. The study of plant cell cyclecontrol genes is expected to contribute to the understandingof these unique developmental phenomena. The principal regulatorsof the eukaryotic cell cycle, the cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs)and cyclins, are conserved in plants. This review focuses oncell cycle regulation in the plant Arabidopsis thaliana . Whileexpression of one Arabidopsis CDK gene, Cdc2aAt, was positivelycorrelated with the competence of cells to divide, expressionof a mitotic-like cyclin, cyc1At, was almost exclusively confinedto dividing cells. Summary

The reproductive behavior of the honeydew moth, Cryptoblabes gnidiella (Millière) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was studied in the laboratory. The sex ratio was 1.1:1, males to females, in both laboratory and field stocks. Most of the females that mated did so during the first night after emergence; males began mating on the following night. Mating occurred 1–2 h before dawn and averaged 100 min. Both sexes mated only once in one night. Most females mated only once in their lifetime, a few mated 2–4 times, whereas males mated up to six times per lifetime. Insects that lived longer also mated more times. When the sex ratio was altered from 3:1 to 1:3, males to females, the percentage of females that mated in one night dropped from 90 to 65, whereas the number of matings per male rose from 0.32 to 2.25. When fresh one-day-old females were provided daily at a ratio of three per male, the males averaged 1.4 matings per lifetime vs. 2.6 with 2- to 3-day-old females. A delay in mating did not affect the percentages of males and females that mated; highest percentages were obtained with 2- to 4-day-old males and females, but a delay in mating resulted in egg fertility dropping from 91 % to 73 %. The preoviposition period lasted a full day after mating, and then most of the eggs were laid during the first night. Average fecundity was 105 eggs per female (maximum: 230).  相似文献

Root hairs elongate in a highly polarized manner known as tip growth. Overexpression of constitutively active Rho of Plant (ROP)/RAC GTPases mutants induces swelling of root hairs. Here, we demonstrate that Atrop11CA‐induced swelling of root hairs depends on the composition of the growth medium. Depletion of ammonium allowed normal root hair elongation in Atrop11CA plants, induced the development of longer root hairs in wild‐type plants and suppressed the effect of Atrop11CA expression on actin organization and reactive oxygen species distribution, whereas membrane localization of the protein was not affected. Ammonium at concentrations higher than 1 mM and the presence of nitrate were required for induction of swelling. Oscillations in wall and cytoplasmic pH are known to accompany tip growth in root hairs, and buffering of the growth medium decreased Atrop11CA‐induced swelling. Fluorescence ratio imaging experiments revealed that in wild‐type root hairs, the addition of NH4NO3 to the growth medium induced an increase in the amplitude of extracellular and intracellular pH oscillations and an overall decrease in cytoplasmic pH at the cell apex. Based on these results, we suggest a model in which ROP GTPases and nitrogen‐dependent pH oscillations function in parallel pathways, creating a positive feedback loop during root hair growth.  相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small RNAs, which typically function by guiding cleavage of target mRNAs. They are known to play roles in a variety of plant processes including development, responses to environmental stresses and senescence. To identify senescence regulation of miRNAs in Arabidopsis thaliana, eight small RNA libraries were constructed and sequenced at four different stages of development and senescence from both leaves and siliques, resulting in more than 200 million genome‐matched sequences. Parallel analysis of RNA ends libraries, which enable the large‐scale examination of miRNA‐guided cleavage products, were constructed and sequenced, resulting in over 750 million genome‐matched sequences. These large datasets led to the identification a new senescence‐inducible small RNA locus, as well as new regulation of known miRNAs and their target genes during senescence, many of which have established roles in nutrient responsiveness and cell structural integrity. In keeping with remobilization of nutrients thought to occur during senescence, many miRNAs and targets had opposite expression pattern changes between leaf and silique tissues during the progression of senescence. Taken together, these findings highlight the integral role that miRNAs may play in the remobilization of resources and alteration of cellular structure that is known to occur in senescence.  相似文献

Positive phototaxis was demonstrated in specimens of Amphistegina radiata within the range of photonic fluxes of 1011 to 1015 photons × cm-2× sec-1. No response was found at lower intensities. Amphistegina radiata has a Dartnall nomogram-shaped action spectrum with a peak at ~500 nm. In addition, A. radiata and A. madagascariensis, which had been maintained at 18 C, moved toward higher temperatures in a horizontal temperature gradient in total darkness. Amphistegina radiata and A. madagascariensis did not move at temperatures ≤ 12 C and ≤ 16 C respectively. An equal number of specimens moved toward the higher and lower temperatures in the gradient when A. radiata was placed at ~29 C and A. madagascariensis at ~22 C. The roles of light and temperature in the distribution of the genus Amphistegina in nature are discussed.  相似文献
