Histochemical Localization of Calcium Oxalate Crystals in Starch Grains of Yams (Dioscorea) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The bulbils and/or tubers of seven species of yams (Dioscorea)were examined for crystal content using light microscopy andhistochemistry. Calcium oxalate crystals in the form of raphide bundles werelocalized in the parenchymatous tissues. Within starch grains,crystals of various shapes and sizes were observed. The variationin shape and sizes of the intra-amylar crystals could be exploitedfor taxonomic purposes. Calcium oxalate crystals appear to serve a storage functionin these starch grains. A study of extrafloral nectaries has been made in the Cucurbitaceae to ascertain their structure and assess their taxonomic potential. Nineteen species representing nine Old World genera and one New World genus were examined. These included Telfairia occidentalis, Telfairia pedata, Momordica charantia, Lagenaria siceraria, Citrullus lanatus, Luffa aegyptiaca, Cucurbita moschata and Trichosanthes cucumerina , which are of economic importance and cultivated in Nigeria for their leaves and/or fruits.
Observation of the regularity of ant and insect-visitors, along with tests for glucose and β-glucosidase enzymes, revealed the presence of extrafloral nectaries in nine species. Considerable variation exists in the distribution and morphology of nectaries between genera, especially in the tribe Benincaseae. The nutritional and ecological significance of the occurrence of extrafloral nectaries in Telfairia occidentalis is discussed. 相似文献

Cytogenetic studies in the Andropogon gayanus—A. tectorum complex (Granimae). Studies on the morphology, karyotype and meiotic behaviour of collections of Andropogon gayanus [2 n = 40), A. tectorum (2 n = 20,30) and their hybrids, obtained by both open pollination and controlled crosses, have been made. The chromosome number of 2 n = 30 for A. tectorum is new. Karyotypic analyses of the species and the preponderance of trivalents at diakinesis in the triploid and aneuploid hybrids show that considerable homology exists between the genomes of the two species. The evolutionary relationship between the two species and the probable origin of tetraploid A. gayanus are discussed. 相似文献

Exit traps, placed over the air vents of septic tanks, were used to examine species diversity and relative abundance of mosquitoes breeding in ammonia-rich waters of septic tanks. Of the six species found, Culex decens Theobald and Culex cinereus Theobald appeared to be competing successfully with Culex quinquefasciatus Say during the wet season but not during the long dry season. The seasonal timing of their displacement by Cx quinquefasciatus was variable and did not correlate well with climatic factors. The three other species present, generally during the wet season and early dry season, were Culex tigripes G. & C., Culex horridus Edwards and Aedes aegypt (L.). Experimental bucket ovitraps were used to assess preference towards covered (dark) septic tank water in comparison with sunlit septic tank water, covered and sunlit compost water. These were colonized by Cx quinquefasciatus, Cx decens, Ae. aegypti and Ae. vittatus Bigot. The covered septic tank water was more abundantly colonized by Cx quinquefasciatus and marginally so by the two Aedes species. Cx decens appeared to colonize the exposed compost water more readily in the dry season, but changed to the covered septic tank water in the wet season. The discussion centres around competition between these mosquitos species and concludes that it would be useful to know what environmental factors, or what aspects of competition, lead to severe natural reductions in the abundance of the major pest species Cx quinquefasciatus. 相似文献
