In this paper we explore the application of Amazonian forest change models to the Guinea savanna environment of western Africa. In particular, we examine recent research documenting the growth of peri-village forest islands in the area of Kissidougou, Guinea, which purports to challenge the pervasive view of Guinea savanna deforestation brought about by human activity. As a more systematic approach to the analysis of human/environmental interactions, we propose an "ethnography of landscape," in which the findings of detailed, local ethnographic and ecological case studies are combined with remotely sensed information on what the wider region looks like as it changes over time. In pursuing this research, we employ aerial photography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques to examine our study area of Kilimi in northwestern Sierra Leone. We show that a Kissidougou-type model of peri-village forest island growth is not applicable to this region, where other environmental change processes are underway. In future work, we propose to employ Landsat satellite image archives to examine, monitor, and compare processes of ecological change throughout the Guinea savanna. Abstract: 3-Indole ethanol has been recently identified as the hypnotic agent in trypanosomal sleeping sickness, and because it is formed in vivo after ethanol or disulfiram treatment, it is also associated with the study of alcoholism. When administered intraperitoneally to rats (250 mg/kg) tryptophol induced a sleep-like state that lasted less than an hour (no righting reflex was apparent 2 min after injection, but it returned at 11 min in bovine serum albumin solution, and 47 min in 40% ethanol solution). In ethanol solutions, tryptophol reduced brain cortical glucose utilization by 55% to the basal brain metabolic rate, and this effect lasted less than 1 h. Synergistic effects of tryptophol and ethanol were suggested by the observation that in albumin solution, tryptophol reduced brain glucose utilization by 35%, but a normal rate was not observed until 2 h postinjection.  相似文献

For the Susu of northwestern Sierra Leone, rural settlement dynamics reflect a frontier culture history and the perpetuation of frontier sociopolitical arrangements in village life. Under frontier conditions people are wealth. The competition among male elders for wealth-in-people is a major determinant of village movements and the organization and deployment of agricultural labor. In this article, I explore the implications of frontier social arrangements, as illustrated in the careers and lives of individual elder men, for the ecology of swidden agriculture. One significant result is a competitive scramble for labor, which both hinders crop production and leads to problems of intensification and resource degradation. I conclude that local problems of resource management are the result of individual efforts to achieve and maintain social position in the context of established systems of hierarchy.  相似文献

Heating (20R)-3beta,20,26-trihydroxy-27-norcholest-5-en-22-one (1) with hydrazine and KOH at 160 degrees C completely converted the steroid to a diastereoisomeric mixture of the new (20R,22RS)-27-norcholest-5-ene-3beta,20,22-triols (2). Exclusive formation of 2 suggests that the expected Wolff-Kishner reduction to a methylene group at the C-22 ketone in 1 was diverted to the C-26 position by a 1,5-hydride shift. All attempts under acid conditions failed to produce a C-22 phenyl hydrazone from 1. However, reaction of 1 was reacted with phenylhydrazine in hot KOH, gave the C-26 phenylhydrazone 4 as the sole product. Evidently, under alkaline conditions, first a hydride ion undergoes an intramolecular transfer from the C-26 CH(2)OH group to the C-22 ketone in 1, and then the phenylhydrazine traps the newly formed aldehyde. To examine this hypothesis, we constructed computer-simulated transition state models from quantum chemical calculations and then compared data from these models with NMR measurements of the reaction mixtures containing 2. The NMR data showed that the C-22 diastereoisomers of 2 are formed in a nearly 1:1 ratio exactly as predicted from the energy-optimized transition states, which were calculated for intramolecular 1,5-hydride shifts that produced each of the two C-22 diastereoisomers. Accordingly, these results support the hypothesis that an intramolecular 1,5-hydride shift mechanism promotes complete conversion of 1 to 2 under classical Wolff-Kishner reduction conditions.  相似文献

The structural gene for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase ( acdS ) from the endophytic plant growth-promoting bacterium Burkholderia phytofirmans PsJN was isolated and used to construct a mutant strain B. phytofirmans YS2 ( B. phytofirmans PsJN/Δ acdS ), in which an internal segment of the acdS gene was deleted. The mutant YS2 lost ACC deaminase activity as well as the ability to promote the elongation of the roots of canola seedlings. Concomitant with the creation of this deletion mutant, a number of physiological changes were observed in the bacterium, including an increase in indole acetic acid synthesis, a decrease in the production of siderophores and an increase in the cellular level of the stationary-phase σ factor, RpoS. Introduction of the wild-type acdS gene into the mutant YS2 to construct strain B. phytofirmans YS3 ( B. phytofirmans YS2/pRK-AcdS) restored both ACC deaminase activity and plant growth-promotion activity in strain YS3. However, the complemented mutant still showed the above-mentioned physiological changes.  相似文献
