The study of the structural and functional properties of key components of polar marine ecosystems has received increased attention in order to better understand the ecological consequences of future sea temperature rise and seasonal ice retraction. Owing to this purpose, during the ATOS-Arctic cruise, held in July 2007 in the framework of the 2007–2008 International Polar Year, we studied the respiratory carbon demand of mesozooplankton as well as their contribution to the regeneration of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus (NH4-N and PO4-P) via excretion. The studied area comprised several stations along a latitudinal gradient in the East Greenland current, plus a network of stations NW of the Svalbard islands. The specific respiratory carbon losses and phosphorus (PO4-P) excretion rates were similar or slightly higher than some reports for Arctic mesozooplankton, but the nitrogen (NH4-N) excretion rates were higher by a factor of 3 when compared with previous data sets. The mesozooplankton respiratory losses were equivalent to 23% of primary production, and at turn zooplankton contributed by excretion to more than 50% of the N and P required by phytoplankton. Although C:N, C:P and N:P metabolic atomic quotients almost coincided with the average Redfield’s stoichiometric ratios, the low C:N values when compared to previous reports suggested a predominance of protein-related metabolic substrates. The potential consequences of changes observed in the C:N, N:P and C:P metabolic ratios of mesozooplankton for Arctic marine ecosystems are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of algal cell size on the light environment withindense phytoplankton populations was analysed in cultures of11 freshwater algae (mostly Chlorophyta) varying widely in cellsize and growing at saturated (220 µM m2 s1) andlimited (11 µM m2 s1) irradiances Chlorophyll-a-specificabsorbance coefficients did not bear any obvious relationshipto cell size and, as expected from previous analyses, were stronglyinfluenced by the light intensity at which the algae were grown.However, biomass (fresh weight)-specific absorbance coefficientsdecreased as algal cell volume increased regardless of the incomingirradiance Intracellular chlorophyll a concentration (c1), whichdecreased as algal cell size increased, explained a substantialfraction of the variance in biomass (fresh weight)-specifjcabsorbance coefficients. Thus, this study supports the notionthat reduced serf-shading allows large algae to support greatermaximal biomass than smaller algae.  相似文献

Our laboratory has focused on defining, localizing, and understanding the mode of action of genes involved in fractionated x-irradiation (FXI) leukemia in susceptible and resistant mouse strains. We have described the genetic and molecular evidence suggesting the existence of multiple independent loci involved in FXI-induced leukemogenesis. These studies indicated that one of these, Ril-1, a locus on the distal portion of chromosome 15, is the major locus influencing susceptibility to the disease. Our data unequivocally place Ril-1 in the gene complex Ly-6--Ril-1--Sis--H-30--Pol-5. Ril-1 appears to be closest to Ly-6 and Sis. We report that in FXI-induced leukemias there are hypomethylation changes in the Ly-6 region as compared to normal thymocytes. In contrast, Sis was found to be hypermethylated and not expressed. In addition, we have noted DNA rearrangements in the Ly-6--Pol-5 region in the majority of tumors examined using the Ly-6 and spleen focus-forming virus (SFFLV) molecular probes. Two DNA fragments, AP-1 and AP-2, encoding amino acid sequences closely related to Ser/Thr protein phosphatases were amplified from Arabidopsis thaliana genomic DNA. Fragment AP-1 was used to screen. A. thaliana cDNA libraries and several positive clones were isolated. Clones EP8a and EP14a were sequenced and found to encode almost identical proteins (97% identity). Both proteins are 306 amino acids in length and are very similar (79–80% identity) to the mammalian isotypes of the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase 2A. Therefore, they have been designated PP2A-1 and PP2A-2. A third cDNA clone, EP7, was isolated and sequenced. The polypeptide encoded (308 amino acids, lacking the initial Met codon) is 80% identical with human phosphatases 2A and was named PP2A-3. The PP2A-3 protein is extremely similar (95% identity) to the predicted protein from a cDNA clone previously found in Brassica napus. Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA using AP-1 and AP-2 probes, as well as probes derived from clones EP7, EP8a and EP14a strongly indicates that at least 6 genes closely related to type 2A phosphatases are present in the genome of A. thaliana. Northern blot analysis using the same set of probes demonstrates that, at the seedling stage, the mRNA levels for PP2A-1, PP2A-3 and the gene containing the AP-1 sequence are much higher than those of PP2A-2 and AP-2. These results demonstrate that a multiplicity of type 2A phosphatases might be differentially expressed in higher plants.  相似文献

We tested two hypotheses about boundary units and seven about environmental control of species diversity in order to explain geographical trends in the richness of amphibian species in the Mediterranean watershed of the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The number of amphibian species tends to decrease from west to east. The longitudinal trend in the richness of amphibian species actually occurs on passing from one basin to another, but there is not any longitudinal trend within the basins. Multivariate analyses confirmed that the disturbances of episodic river-basin floodings were the principal factor which controls the richness of amphibian species. They explained 94.8% of the observed variations in the richness of amphibian species in this area, according to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis.We propose hydrographic basins as suitable geographical units for further biogeographical analysis and for considering the role of disturbances produced by floods in the environmental control of species diversity.  相似文献

Summary In the course of solid-phase synthesis of phosphopeptides by a post-assembly global phosphorylation strategy, the corresponding H-phosphonate peptides form as byproducts. We describe model studies to investigate this side reaction as a function of reaction conditions, and use this information to develop conditions that minimize the problem, i.e., use of dibenzyl N,N-di-isopropyl phosphoramidite for phosphitylation, followed immediately by oxidation with anhydrous tert-butyl hydroperoxide in dry tetrahydrofuran under argon, and final acidolytic cleavage.This work was taken in part from the Ph.D. Theses of E.A. Monogonont rotifers are cyclical parthenogens livingin limnic habitats with considerable seasonalvariation and often with island-like features. Theoccurrence of bisexual reproduction in these organismsmakes it feasible to define fields for generecombination, i.e. biological species. In thispaper, we analyze the structure of the diversity inmonogonont rotifers using several data sets: taxonomicand intraspecific diversity as reported inidentification keys, morphological variation reportedin ecological studies, and allozyme and matingbehavior patterns. Our analysis suggests that siblingspecies may be frequent in rotifers. Monogonontrotifers seem to meet conditions for an activespeciation, which might be particularly promoted byseasonal specialization and timing of bisexualreproduction.  相似文献

The distribution of noradrenaline and adrenaline in the brain of the urodele amphibian Pleurodeles waltlii has been studied with antibodies raised against noradrenaline and the enzymes dopamine--hydroxylase and phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase. Noradrenaline-containing cell bodies were found in the anterior preoptic area, the hypothalamic nucleus of the periventricular organ, the locus coeruleus and in the solitary tract/area postrema complex at the level of the obex. Noradrenergic fibers are widely distributed throughout the brain innervating particularly the ventrolateral forebrain, the medial amygdala, the lateral part of the posterior tubercle, the parabrachial region and the ventrolateral rhombencephalic tegmentum. Putative adrenergic cell bodies were found immediately rostral to the obex, ventral to the solitary tract. Whereas the cell bodies and their dendrites were Golgi-like stained, axons were more difficult to trace. Nevertheless, some weakly immunoreactive fibers could be traced to the basal forebrain.
