Summary Spacing and kinship of the Formosan squirrel, Callosciurus erythraeus thaiwanensis, were studied in two different habitats. One, native habitat in the woods of Kenting, southern Formosa, was rich in available food throughout the year and had several species of predators. The other, a site in Kamakura, central Japan where squirrels had been introduced, had relatively scanty food and few potential predators. 1. Home ranges among males and between sexes overlapped extensively in both habitats. 2. Females occupied exclusive home ranges in Kamakura but had small overlapping home ranges in Ken-ting. 3. Most males disappeared from their natal areas at 1 year old in both habitats (86% in Kamakura and 93% in Ken-ting), but less females disappeared (36% in Kamakura and 35% in Ken-ting). 4. In Kamakura, daughters settled adjacent to the mother or inherited the home range of the mother, but never shared the mother's home range. In Ken-ting, 35% of daughters shared the home range with their mothers. 5. Tolerance among female kin in Ken-ting was probably facilitated by the richness of available food throughout the year, and functioned to reduce predation risk via alarm calling and mobbing. 相似文献

Nimustine hydrochloride (ACNU) is a nitrosourea derivative anticancer agent which has been shown to cause persistent truncus arteriosus in chick embryos. The objective of this study was to confirm the teratogenic effects of ACNU on the cardiovascular system of chick embryos and to determine whether ACNU induces persistent truncus arteriosus by interfering with neural crest cells. Various doses of ACNU ranging from 10 to 200 micrograms were injected under the chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryos on the third day of incubation. Saline solution was used as the control. After 10 to 11 days of incubation, 242 (46%) survivors of the 524 treated eggs were obtained. The survival rates of the embryos and the frequencies of cardiovascular anomalies were dose dependent. Of 146 embryos with cardiovascular anomalies, 104 (71%) had persistent truncus arteriosus. Ventricular septal defect and double-outlet right ventricle were seen in 37 (25%) and one (1%), respectively. Aortic arch anomalies were seen in 116 embryos (79%). Quail-chick chimeras (chick embryos with quail cardiac neural crest) were treated with 50 micrograms of ACNU and examined histologically 24 hours later. These chimeras showed dying neural crest cells in the pharyngeal arches. Dying cells were also noted in the neural tube, cranial ganglia, retina, and otocyst. These results suggest that persistent truncus arteriosus in chick embryos treated with ACNU is induced by neural crest cell death. 相似文献

The effect of human C-reactive protein (CRP) on macrophage function was studied in an assay of superoxide anion (O2-) production. Peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM) of guinea pigs exposed in vitro to various doses of CRP for 72 hr resulted in the development of O2- production dose-dependently, measured by increases in superoxide dismutase-inhibitable nitro blue tetrazolium reduction. The O2--producing activity of PEM cultured without CRP, used as a control, decreased markedly in proportion to incubation time. The O2- production by PEM exposed to CRP for 18 hr when control PEM were still high in O2- production, was decreased by larger doses of CRP, while PEM cultured without CRP for 72 hr, when O2- production by control PEM was very low, followed by incubation with CRP for another 18 hr, produced O2- CRP-dose-dependently as in the case of that observed after 72-hr incubation with CRP. These results indicate that CRP is capable of activating macrophages and acts on macrophage function as a modulator. CRP possesses migration inhibitory factor (MIF)-like activity (as reported in the preceding paper) and also macrophage-activating factor (MAF)-like activity, indicating that CRP may play a functional role at the site of inflammation and tissue damage by accumulating and activating macrophages. 相似文献

The hst gene was originally identified in surgically obtained human gastric mucosae as a transforming gene which could transform NIH3T3 cells morphologically. The hst cDNA clone was synthesized from mRNA of one of the NIH3T3 transformants. A human leukocyte genomic library was screened with this cDNA clone, and an hst genomic fragment was obtained. This genomic fragment itself had transforming activity, and the protein coding sequences were proved to be completely identical to those of the cDNA clone prepared from mRNA of the NIH3T3 transformant. This fact suggests that rearrangement or other structural alterations in the coding sequence are not required for the activation of the hst gene. The predicted hst protein consists of 206 amino acids and has a significant homology (40-50%) to fibroblast growth factors and int-2 protein. Summary A novel protein-free synthetic medium has been developed for the culture of human squamous cell carcinoma cells. This medium,
designated PF86-1, supports the serial subcultivation of six out of nine human squamous cell carcinoma cell lines in a protein-free,
chemically defined condition without the adapting culture from serum-containing conditions. These cell lines growing in PF86-1
exhibited nearly equal potency to grow in massive culture without noticeable changes in morphology but presented a significantly
decreased level of colony forming efficiency when compared with the cells cultured in serum-containing media, suggesting the
implication of some autocrine mechanism. Interestingly, this medium supported the growth of normal human squamous cells of
oral mucosa and skin for more than 2 mo. in the primary explant culture in spite of high levels of calcium ion concentration,
where the overgrowth of fibroblasts as contaminant was not observed. These results suggest that PF86-1 supports the growth
of cells derived from epidermal tissues selectively and provides the same defined condition for growth of malignant and nonmalignant
human squamous cells. It seems, therefore, that PF86-1 allows investigations on the products of squamous cell carcinoma cells

A systemic oxidative stress of HIV (+) individuals has been recognized from a low glutathione level and a high level of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF. Previously, we demonstrated that the catalase enzyme activity in HIV (+) population is significantly altered depending on the cell types; the level was significantly high in red blood cells while the enzymes in white blood cells were remarkably low (Res Commun Subs Abuse 16: 161–176, 1995). In this study, we further characterized the difference in RBC catalase molecules between HIV (+) and control population. We have found that RBC from HIV (+) population, whether they were asymptomatic or symptomatic, contained a significantly elevated catalase protein accompanied by the enzyme activities, and that the majority of the elevated protein were acidic pl of the molecules with an identical subunit mass of approximately 60 KDa. These results suggest that catalase is induced prior to and/or during erythroid differentiation lineage in HIV (+) population as a somatic defense to respond and compensate for a systemic oxidative stress and for an anemic condition.
