We used data from a 13-year field study of wild ringtailed lemurs to analyze the relationship between female rank and reproductive
parameters. In medium and small groups there were no significant differences in birth rate, infant mortality rate, and the
number of surviving infants between the female rank categories. On the other hand, in large sized groups low-ranked females
had a smaller number of surviving infants than middle-ranked females. This suggests that in large sized groups, within-group
competition lowered the values of reproductive parameters of low-ranked females. On the other hand, high and low-ranked females
of small sized groups tended to have a smaller number of surviving infants than high-ranked females of medium sized groups
and middle-ranked females of large sized groups. Between-group competition should lower the values of their reproductive parameters.
In sum, these results fit the expectation from Wrangham’s (1980) inter group feeding competition model. 相似文献

The present study investigated the influence of dominance rank in combination with kinship on age-related differences in social
grooming among adult females in a free-ranging group of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Eighty-three adult females were divided into six sub-groups according to age-class (younger: 5–9 years old; middle: 10–14 years
old; older: 15–22 years old) and dominance rank (high and low rank). The ratio of the number of unrelated females that each
female groomed to the total number of available unrelated females and grooming bouts which she gave to unrelated females decreased
with increasing age for both high- and low-ranking females, whereas age did not appear to affect corresponding values for
related females. On the other hand, compared with low-ranking females, high-ranking females of all age-classes received grooming
more often from a larger number of unrelated females. Moreover, older females of low rank received grooming less often from
a smaller number of unrelated females than younger females of low rank. These results indicate that with increasing age females
are more likely to concentrate on related females when they have grooming interactions with other females. This tendency seems
to be more apparent for low-ranking females. Moreover, the present findings also indicate that older high-ranking females
could maintain their social attractiveness as high as younger high-ranking females. 相似文献

Background
In April 2009, a novel swine-derived influenza A virus (H1N1pdm) emerged and rapidly spread around the world, including Japan. It has been suggested that the virus can bind to both 2,3- and 2,6-linked sialic acid receptors in infected mammals, in contrast to contemporary seasonal H1N1 viruses, which have a predilection for 2,6-linked sialic acid.Methods/Results
To elucidate the existence and transmissibility of α2,3 sialic acid-specific viruses in H1N1pdm, amino acid substitutions within viral hemagglutinin molecules were investigated, especially D187E, D222G, and Q223R, which are related to a shift from human to avian receptor specificity. Samples from individuals infected during the first and second waves of the outbreak in Japan were examined using a high-throughput sequencing approach. In May 2009, three specimens from mild cases showed D222G and/or Q223R substitutions in a minor subpopulation of viruses infecting these individuals. However, the substitutions almost disappeared in the samples from five mild cases in December 2010. The D187E substitution was not widespread in specimens, even in May 2009.Conclusions
These results suggest that α2,3 sialic acid-specific viruses, including G222 and R223, existed in humans as a minor population in the early phase of the pandemic, and that D222 and Q223 became more dominant through human-to-human transmission during the first and second waves of the epidemic. Incretin promotes insulin secretion acutely. Recently, orally-administered DPP-4 inhibitors represent a new class of anti-hyperglycemic agents. Indeed, inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-4), sitagliptin, has just begun to be widely used as therapeutics for type 2 diabetes. However, the effects of sitagliptin-treatment on insulin exocytosis from single β-cells are yet unknown. We therefore investigated how sitagliptin-treatment in db/db mice affects insulin exocytosis by treating db/db mice with des-F-sitagliptin for 2 weeks. Perfusion studies showed that 2 weeks-sitagliptin treatment potentiated insulin secretion. We then analyzed insulin granule motion and SNARE protein, syntaxin 1, by TIRF imaging system. TIRF imaging of insulin exocytosis showed the increased number of docked insulin granules and increased fusion events from them during first-phase release. In accord with insulin exocytosis data, des-F-sitagliptin-treatment increased the number of syntaxin 1 clusters on the plasma membrane. Thus, our data demonstrated that 2-weeks des-F-sitagliptin-treatment increased the fusion events of insulin granules, probably via increased number of docked insulin granules and that of syntaxin 1 clusters. 相似文献

An empirical Bayes (EB) pairwise FST estimator was previously introduced and evaluated for its performance by numerical simulation. In this study, we conducted coalescent simulations and generated genetic population structure mechanistically, and compared the performance of the EBFST with Nei's GST, Nei and Chesser's bias‐corrected GST (GST_NC), Weir and Cockerham's θ (θWC) and θ with finite sample correction (θWC_F). We also introduced EB estimators for Hedrick’ G’ST and Jost’ D. We applied these estimators to publicly available SNP genotypes of Atlantic herring. We also examined the power to detect the environmental factors causing the population structure. Our coalescent simulations revealed that the finite sample correction of θWC is necessary to assess population structure using pairwise FST values. For microsatellite markers, EBFST performed the best among the present estimators regarding both bias and precision under high gene flow scenarios (). For 300 SNPs, EBFST had the highest precision in all cases, but the bias was negative and greater than those for GST_NC and θWC_F in all cases. GST_NC and θWC_F performed very similarly at all levels of FST. As the number of loci increased up to 10 000, the precision of GST_NC and θWC_F became slightly better than for EBFST for cases with , even though the size of the bias remained constant. The EB estimators described the fine‐scale population structure of the herring and revealed that ~56% of the genetic differentiation was caused by sea surface temperature and salinity. During angiogenesis endothelial cells migrate towards a chemotactic stimulus. Understanding the mechanism of endothelial cell migration is critical to the therapeutic manipulation of angiogenesis and ultimately cancer prevention. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent chemotactic stimulus of endothelial cells during angiogenesis. The endothelial cell signal transduction pathway of VEGF represents a potential target for cancer therapy, but the mechanisms of post-receptor signal transduction including the roles of rho family GTPases in regulating the cytoskeletal effects of VEGF in endothelial cells are not understood.
Here we analyze the mechanisms of cell migration in the mouse brain endothelial cell line (bEND3). Stable transfectants containing a tetracycline repressible expression vector were used to induce expression of Rac mutants. Endothelial cell haptotaxis was stimulated by constitutively active V12Rac on collagen and vitronectin coated supports, and chemotaxis was further stimulated by VEGF. Osteopontin coated supports were the most stimulatory to bEND3 haptotaxis, but VEGF was not effective in further increasing migration on osteopontin coated supports. Haptotaxis on support coated with collagen, vitronectin, and to a lesser degree osteopontin was inhibited by N17 Rac. N17 Rac expression blocked stimulation of endothelial cell chemotaxis by VEGF. As part of the chemotactic stimulation, VEGF caused a loss of actin organization at areas of cell-cell contact and increased stress fiber expression in endothelial cells which were directed towards pores in the transwell membrane. N17 Rac prevented the stimulation of cell-cell contact disruption and the stress fiber stimulation by VEGF.
These data demonstrate two pathways of regulating endothelial cell motility, one in which Rac is activated by matrix/integrin stimulation and is a crucial modulator of endothelial cell haptotaxis. The other pathway, in the presence of osteopontin, is Rac independent. VEGF stimulated chemotaxis, is critically dependent on Rac activation. Osteopontin was a potent matrix activator of motility, and perhaps one explanation for the absence of a VEGF plus osteopontin effect is that osteopontin stimulated motility was inhibitory to the Rac pathway. 相似文献

This study documents age-related changes in the interactions of wild-born cynomolgus macaque mothers and their infants living
in individual cages during the first 14 weeks of infant life. Body contact between mother and infant, maternal holding, and
infant sucking were found to decrease, and the mothers showed an increased frequency of aggression toward their infants with
age. These results were broadly similar to those reported for mother-infant interactions in other macaques living in social
groups. Nevertheless, a clear difference between the present cynomolgus macaques and other macaques in social groups was apparent.
The cynomolgus macaque mothers tended to permit their infants to move about freely without displaying maternal protectiveness
such as restraint or retrieval, unlike other macaque mothers in social groups. Such maternal behaviors might derive from the
experience of living in individual cages for many years and the relative safety of living in individual cages. The lack of
maternal restraint and retrieval could be responsible for the observed sex differences in behavior: male infants moved more
actively, and broke, and made contact with their mothers more frequently than did female infants. Moreover, mothers of female

GH30‐7 endoxylanase C from the cellulolytic fungus Talaromyces cellulolyticus (TcXyn30C) belongs to glycoside hydrolase family 30 subfamily 7, and specifically releases 22‐(4‐O‐methyl‐α‐d ‐glucuronosyl)‐xylobiose from glucuronoxylan, as well as various arabino‐xylooligosaccharides from arabinoxylan. TcXyn30C has a modular structure consisting of a catalytic domain and a C‐terminal cellulose‐binding module 1 (CBM1). In this study, the crystal structure of a TcXyn30C mutant which lacks the CBM1 domain was determined at 1.65 Å resolution. The structure of the active site of TcXyn30C was compared with that of the bifunctional GH30‐7 xylanase B from T. cellulolyticus (TcXyn30B), which exhibits glucuronoxylanase and xylobiohydrolase activities. The results revealed that TcXyn30C has a conserved structural feature for recognizing the 4‐O‐methyl‐α‐d ‐glucuronic acid (MeGlcA) substituent in subsite −2b. Additionally, the results demonstrated that Phe47 contributes significantly to catalysis by TcXyn30C. Phe47 is located in subsite −2b and also near the C‐3 hydroxyl group of a xylose residue in subsite −2a. Substitution of Phe47 with an arginine residue caused a remarkable decrease in the catalytic efficiency towards arabinoxylan, suggesting the importance of Phe47 in arabinoxylan hydrolysis. These findings indicate that subsite −2b of TcXyn30C has unique structural features that interact with arabinofuranose and MeGlcA substituents. 相似文献

From 1989 to 1998, 204 live births were recorded for ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at Berenty, Madagascar. Excluding unknown birth dates, the peak month of birth was September, with 82.0% (146/178) occurring
during this period. The offspring sex ratio (1∶1.19) was not significantly different from 1∶1, and there was no association
with the mother's age. The first births occurred at the ages of 2 to 4 yr. The annual birth rate was very low at the age of
2 yr (11.1%), but increased thereafter: to 50.0% at the age of 3 yr, and to 75–85% at the age of 4 or more years. Multiple
births were very rare, since only three sets of twins and one set of triplets were recorded. As for the interbirth interval,
a one-year interval was the most common (92.2%). Infant mortality within the first year was 37.7% (77/204). Neonatal mortality
within the first month accounted for 31.2% of all infant dealths. 相似文献
