The empirical question of thresholds and mechanisms of mate choice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Theoretical discussions concerning how animals might best sample and select mates have suggested that individuals could base decisions either on a sample of mates (sampled-based decisions) or on a threshold of comparison (threshold-based decisions). Recent theoretical work demonstrates that threshold-based mating decisions generate higher expected fitness than sample-based mating decisions when search costs exist. Empirical results from most unmanipulated systems, however, either conclude that females make sample-based decisions or are inconclusive. A few experimental studies designed to detect mating thresholds purport to demonstrate threshold-based choice but an examination of these studies indicates such conclusions were premature. We believe that few examples of threshold-based choice exist because protocols designed to identify mating thresholds were often inconsistent with models of threshold choice. We suggest that future empirical work strive not to document mating thresholdsper se. Rather, future work might best reveal decision rules by manipulating the distribution of quality among potential mates; such manipulations predict uniquely how females using sample-based and threshold-based decision rules should behave.  相似文献

Synopsis The mating behavior and dentition ofUrolophus halleri, the round stingray was examined. Males frequently bite females during the mating period but most male biting does not result in copulation. In bites that do not lead to copulation, males bite the posterior (or occasionally the medial) portion of the females' disc but females often free themselves from these bites. In bites that precede copulation, males bite the anterior portion of the females' disc and females do not struggle to free themselves. Thus, females may exert some form of choice when they are bitten. Mature males have sexually dimorphic dentition that may aid in holding females. A principal component analysis (PCA) showed that in juvenile males, the relative size of the teeth decrease while the relative thickness of the disc increases as body size enlarges; adult males displayed no clear pattern. In adult females, there is a relative decrease in tooth size and increase in relative disc thickness as body size enlarges. The relative increase in females disc thickness in areas where they are bitten may function to minimize the amount of damage due to non-copulatory biting. There is no indication that biting functions to induce female receptivity but it may allow females and males to acquire information about potential mates. Thus, copulatory biting functions to maintain contact during copulation while the function of non-copulatory biting is less clear.  相似文献

The contractile effects of galanin on isolated longitudinal smooth muscle strips of pre-crop esophagus, proventriculus, duodenum, colon, and cecum of chickens were investigated. Application of galanin (5.0-100.0 nM) evoked strong contractions from the colon and cecum (hindgut), but evoked minimal responses from the pre-crop esophagus, proventriculus, and duodenum (foregut). Previous studies have demonstrated that the central administration of galanin stimulates food consumption in rats. Since galanin-like immunoreactivity is present in the chicken brain, we speculate that the central release of galanin may increase food intake and possibly be involved in a hypothalamic-colonic reflex modulating hindgut motility and generating a defecation. Thus, the results of this study demonstrate the presence of galanin receptors in the chicken gut and suggest a possible link with their functional presence in the hindgut to the chicken central nervous system.  相似文献

The relative variation in leaf nitrogen concentration and photosynthetic capacity among individuals and sites are compared for mountain birch populations ( Betula pubsecens Ehrh. ssp tortuosa (Ledeb.) Nyman).
Leaf nitrogen concentration and photosynthetic capacity showed significant differences among individuals; 35 and 26% of the total sum of squares respectively, was attributable to differences among individuals. Two measures of leaf morphology also showed differences among individuals (35–58% of total variation). The variation attributable to site differences ranged from 13% (leaf shape, P = 0.11) to 36% (leaf N concentration and photosynthetic capacity, P≤0.01). Of the variation in photosynthetic capacity, 51% was related to leaf nitrogen concentration. Possible causes for and consequences of the differences found are discussed.  相似文献

Predation is an important component of the life history and behavior of many fish. In some species of teleost fishes, conspecifics respond to chemical stimuli from injured conspecifics by displaying a fright response, such as increased cohesion of schooling. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate whether female guppies, Poecilia reticulata, display a fright response when exposed to a filtered extract made from wounded conspecifics. The schooling behavior of female guppies was observed for ten minute periods for each of three treatments: baseline treatment (no substances added to the aquarium water), sham treatment (distilled water added to the aquarium water), and alarm treatment (fish extract added to the aquarium water). Female guppies responded with a fright reaction when exposed to a filtered extract prepared from wounded conspecifics; female swam in a more cohesive school during the alarm treatment than they did in either the baseline or sham treatments. The guppy fright reaction response indicates that the fish extract is recognized by conspecifics. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary In situ trapping efficiencies of Pinguicula alpina L., P. villosa L., and P. vulgaris L. were compared with each other and with those of artificial traps at a subarctic site in northern Sweden. P. vulgaris had the highest trapping efficiency i.e., 21–37 g prey trapped cm-2 day-1 and apparently has some means of attracting prey. The other two species trapped about 14–18 g cm-2 day-1, a value similar to that of paper traps mimicing plant leaves. By weight, Nematocera and Collembola were the dominant groups trapped by P. alpina. P. villosa trapped mainly Collembola, while small Nematocera dominated the prey caught by P. vulgaris. Mites (Acarina) were caught in high numbers but contributed only a small part of the total captured biomass owing to their low weight.  相似文献

Understanding bird migration and dispersal is important to inform full life-cycle conservation planning. Stable hydrogen isotope ratios from feathers (δ2Hf) can be linked to amount-weighted long-term, growing season precipitation δ2H (δ2Hp) surfaces to create δ2Hf isoscapes for assignment to molt origin. However, transfer functions linking δ2Hp with δ2Hf are influenced by physiological and environmental processes. A better understanding of the causes and consequences of variation in δ2Hf values among individuals and species will improve the predictive ability of geographic assignment tests. We tested for effects of species, land cover, forage substrate, nest substrate, diet composition, body mass, sex, and phylogenetic relatedness on δ2Hf from individuals at least two years old of 21 songbird species captured during the same breeding season at a site in northeastern Alberta, Canada. For four species, we also tested for a year × species interaction effect on δ2Hf. A model including species as single predictor received the most support (AIC weight = 0.74) in explaining variation in δ2Hf. A species-specific variance parameter was part of all best-ranked models, suggesting variation in δ2Hf was not consistent among species. The second best-ranked model included a forage substrate × diet interaction term (AIC weight = 0.16). There was a significant year × species interaction effect on δ2Hf suggesting that interspecific differences in δ2Hf can differ among years. Our results suggest that within- and among-year interspecific variation in δ2Hf is the most important source of variance typically not being explicitly quantified in geographic assignment tests using non-specific transfer functions to convert δ2Hp into δ2Hf. However, this source of variation is consistent with the range of variation from the transfer functions most commonly being propagated in assignment tests of geographic origins for passerines breeding in North America.  相似文献

Mate choice copying as public information   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
We outline a framework that views mate choice copying as public information. In this framework, all individuals assess the quality of potential mates. Individuals can benefit by copying when they cannot discriminate differences in potential mates, as copying can result in better discrimination. This framework predicts that the discrimination ability of individuals will strongly determine the frequency of copying behaviour observed: individuals with poor discrimination ability should often copy, whereas individuals with superior discrimination ability should rarely copy. Copying behaviour may occur in a wide variety of taxa but only be observed when individuals are presented with difficult discrimination tasks.  相似文献
