<正> As scientific collaborators of the Chinese-American joint project "Neogene Rocks and Faunas, Yushe Basin, Shanxi, PRC", the present authors, with William R. Downs, Northern Arizona University, sampled the Yushe microfauna in the fall of 1987 and 1988. Abstract.  1. Molecular techniques have greatly added to the number of known sympatric cryptic species in insects. Ecological differences between these newly distinguished species are little explored, but niches often appear to overlap strongly. These cases are good models for exploring new ideas about species coexistence and community structure.
2.  Acanthoscelides obtectus and A. obvelatus are two sister species of bean bruchids, which have been confused until the last decade. One important ecological difference between them has emerged, however: A. obtectus is multivoltine and now distributed worldwide, whereas A. obvelatus is univoltine and restricted to Mesoamerica. Where their ranges overlap, the two species share the same host plants and larvae can sometimes complete development in the same seed.
3. The analysis of 27 622 Mexican individuals of the two species in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 indicates that their niches overlap, but are differentiated with respect to altitude and the kind of beans (wild vs. domesticated). The principal patterns in their relative abundance in different habitats, and at different seasons, were constant from one year to the next.
4. As sympatry of these species seems to be of recent origin, the observed niche differentiation may not have evolved in response to competition, but could instead be the consequence of physiological differences, evolved independently in each species in allopatry, that pre-adapted them for different altitudes and kinds of resources.
5. The combination of biological and historical factors thus appears to allow these two sibling species to coexist in sympatry, despite their broadly overlapping ecological niches.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle development in the vertebrate embryo critically depends on the myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs) including MRF4 and Myf5. Both genes exhibit distinct expression patterns during mouse embryogenesis, although they are genetically closely linked with multiple regulatory elements dispersed throughout the common gene locus. MRF4 has a biphasic expression profile, first in somites and later in foetal skeletal muscles. Here, we demonstrate by transgenic analysis that elements within a 7.5-kb promoter fragment of the MRF4 gene are sufficient to drive the embryonic wave of expression very similar to the endogenous gene in somites of mouse embryos. In contrast, a 3-kb fragment of the proximal promoter fails to support expression in the myotome, suggesting that essential cis-acting elements are located between -7.5 and -3 kb upstream of MRF4. Further analysis of this sequence delimits an essential region between -6.6 and -5.6 kb that together with the 3-kb promoter fragment directs transgene expression in the epaxial myotome of all somites during the appropriate developmental period. These data provide evidence that the partly overlapping expression patterns of Mrf4 and Myf5 in somites are controlled by distinct regulatory elements. We also show that 11.4 kb sequence upstream of MRF4, including the promoter and the somitic control region identified in this study, is not sufficient to elicit target specificity towards the strong Myf5 (-58/-48 kb) enhancer, suggesting that additional yet unidentified elements are necessary to convey promoter selectivity and protect the MRF4 gene from this enhancer.  相似文献

Effect of antisense oligonucleotides on the in vitro translation of the influenza virus M1 protein mRNA was investigated. Afferent connections of the nucleus lateralis posterior (NLP) of the thalamus and area 7 of the parietal cortex with the retrosplenial region of the limbic cortex and hippocampus were studied in rats with retrograde axon transport of horseradish peroxidase. It was shown that the NLP receives ipsilateral projections from area 29d neurons, while area 7 receives ipsilateral axons from area 29d and 29c neurons. It was found that associations of the retrosplenial region with associative cortex are far more pronounced than with associative thalamus. Moreover, the afferent connections of area 7 with area 29d are more numerous than with area 29c. We disclosed no projections of areas 29a and 29b to thalamoparietal system structures. In addition to neocortical input from the limbic cortex, area 7 receives afferent fibers from the archicortex; neurons situated in hippocampus area CA1 are the source of these projections.I. M. The prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) genospecies in West Siberia as well as in many other regions of Russia remains insufficiently investigated. In the present study a total of 151 adult female ticks Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, collected at three localities in eastern regions of West Siberia, where Lyme disease is endemic, were examined for the presence of the spirochete B. burgdorferi s.l. by polymerase chain reaction targeting the 23S-5S rRNA intergenic spacer regions. Spirochetal DNA was detected in on average 15.2+/-3.0% of the ticks examined. The infection rate of adult ticks with B. burgdorferi s.l. at various localities ranged from 8.6+/-3.4% to 29.0+/-7.6%, being greatest in the northernmost site studied and decreasing southwards. The restriction patterns obtained after MseI digestion of the 23S-5S rRNA intergenic spacer amplicons assigned 23 DNA samples to the following genomic groups: 19 to B. garinii (12 to group NT29 and seven to group 20047(T)), three to B. afzelii, and one to mixed B. afzelii and B. garinii NT29. We have not detected other genospecies, which were found in ticks in Europe, the Russian Far East and Japan. Thus, the ticks examined were associated only with two genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. pathogenic to humans (B. garinii and B. afzelii), and B. garinii was the major genospecies infecting adult I. persulcatus in eastern regions of West Siberia.  相似文献

The annual changes in the composition and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were analyzed monthly in surface waters of three high mountain lakes within the Limnological Observatory of the Pyrenees (LOOP; northeast Spain) using both 16S rRNA and functional (ammonia monooxygenase gene, amoA) gene sequencing as well as quantitative PCR amplification. The set of biological data was related to changes in nitrogen species and to other relevant environmental variables. The whole archaeal assemblage was dominated by phylotypes closely related to the crenarchaeal 1.1a group (58% ± 18% of total 16S rRNA gene sequences), and consistent structural changes were detected during the study. Water temperature was the environmental variable that better explained spring, summer, and winter (ice-covered lakes) archaeal assemblage structure. The amoA gene was detected year round, and seasonal changes in amoA gene composition were well correlated with changes in the archaeal 16S rRNA gene pool. In addition, copy numbers of both the specific 1.1a group 16 rRNA and archaeal amoA genes were well correlated, suggesting that most freshwater 1.1a Crenarchaeota had the potential to carry out ammonia oxidation. Seasonal changes in the diversity and abundance of AOA (i.e., amoA) were better explained by temporal changes in ammonium, the substrate for nitrification, and mostly nitrite, the product of ammonia oxidation. Lacustrine amoA gene sequences grouped in coherent freshwater phylogenetic clusters, suggesting that freshwater habitats harbor typical amoA-containing ecotypes, which is different from soils and seas. We observed within the freshwater amoA gene sequence pool a high genetic divergence (translating to up to 32% amino acid divergence) between the spring and the remaining AOA assemblages. This suggests that different AOA ecotypes are adapted to different temporal ecological niches in these lakes.  相似文献

The long-term study (1989–1995) of phytoplankton from the Kuibyshev Reservoir aided by the scanning electron microscopy revealed a salt water representative of centric diatoms Cyclotella ambigua Grunow, new for the Volga River. Morphological features of the frustule including elements of valve ultrastructure (location and structure of central and marginal fultoportulae, rimoportula, striae) are studied. The similarity and difference from other species of the genus, C. exigua Håkansson, C. striata (Grunow) Grunow, C. scaldensis Muylaert et Sabbe, and C. meneghiniana Kützing, are shown. Based on original and literature data, the extended diagnosis of C. ambigua is given along with the examination of the ecology and distribution of this species, little known in Russia and abroad.  相似文献

Using microbeam to irradiate human-hamster hybrid AL cells with defined number of a particles in a highly localized spatial region, this paper showed that cytoplasmic irradiation induced very little toxicity. For example, the cell killing by 4α particle traversal through the cytoplasm was about 10%, and about 70% cells survived after their cytoplasm was irradiated with 32 a particles. In contrast, the survival fractions for nuclear irradiation at the same doses were 35% and less than 1% respectively. Mutation induction showed that while nuclear irradiation induced 3-4-fold more CD59- mutants than cytoplasmic irradiation at equivalent particle traversal, at an equitoxic dose level of 90% survival, the latter exposure mode induced 3.3-fold more mutants than nuclear irradiation. Moreover, using multiplex PCR to analyze five marker genes on chromosome 11 (WT, CAT, PTH, APO-A1 and RAS), the results showed that the majority of mutants induced by cytoplasmic irradiation had retained all of the marker genes ana  相似文献
