Levans produced by four Zymomonas mobilis strains showed antitumour activity against sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich carcinoma in Swiss albino mice. Levans from two strains (ZAP and CP4) had the highest effects. NMR analysis showed that the polymers were composed only of fructose units. The results suggested that the antineoplasic effect is associated to the polysaccharide molecular weight and that a particular molecular weight range may be responsible for this effect. 相似文献

It is difficult to completely understand the life history of an intellectual excluding an understanding of his family upbringing
and formative years. Family upbringing and childhood environment, often the less known part of a life history, play crucial
roles in shaping the ideas and values individuals espouse in their adult life. Notwithstanding, this paper is not concerned
with Don C. Ohadike’s childhood. It rather focuses on the professional career of our able historian – that is the part of
his life as revealed by his most outstanding published writings. Ohadike’s published works contain a wellspring of idioms
that tell much about his values, quality of mind, and his mission as an African historian. Ohadike was a humanist, an African
patriot, and a nationalist crusader. His entire philosophy centered on safeguarding his African identity in an emergent world
of cultural imperialism.

Variation in the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) among eight taxa of the Mimulus guttatus species complex 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1 and ITS2) of the 18S-25S
nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence and the intervening 5.8S region were
sequenced from three individuals in each of eight taxa of the Mimulus
guttatus species complex. Three discrete variants, or "types," of ITS
sequences were found, among which 30%-40% of sites differed, compared with
1%-2% within types. Dot plots indicate that these types were not related by
conspicuous rearrangements or inversions. More than one ITS type was often
found in the same taxon, and two of three ITS types span species
boundaries, indicating their presence prior to speciation. These ITS
sequences showed essentially no positional homology with the nearest
sequenced relative, tomato. In contrast, the 5.8S region was relatively
unvaried, with 8 of 162 sites varied in the sample among all eight taxa.
The phylogeny inferred by the most common ITS sequence type, rooted by the
two other ITS types, agreed with isozymes in showing the distinctness of M.
nudatus, M. laciniatus, and M. tilingii from the other five taxa.

Six heifers were used in a series of experiments to study the effects of experimental infection on bovine reproduction. Four three-year-old Zebu heifers were intravenously inoculated with T. vivax-strain Y58 — on days 14 and 16 of their estrous cycle and two control heifers in the same phase of estrus were not infected. All the heifers were bred in the research pens with a proven bull. The four infected heifers were bred at the first wave of parasitemia and the onset of pyrexia which characterised the infection. All the heifers were examined rectally 40 days after breeding. The four infected heifers were not pregnant but the two controls were. The infected heifers later became anestrous during the experimental period of more than five months. It is concluded that trypanosomiasis may contribute to high infertility rates in cattle kept in endemic areas. 相似文献

The effects of Trypanosoma vivax on pregnancy were studied in 18 heifers. The heifers were bred by a proven bull and divided into three groups of six heifers each. In the first group, four heifers were infected with T . vivax on Day 60 (first trimester) of pregnancy; two other pregnant heifers were uninfected controls. The second and third groups were similarly infected in the fourth (second trimester) and seventh (third trimester) month of pregnancy. One infected heifer in the first-trimester group aborted 39 days postinfection (p.i.); the remaining three had relatively normal gestation and parturition. In the second-trimester group, the pregnancies were carried to term with normal deliveries. In the third-trimester group, three infected heifers (75%) had premature deliveries while the fourth died about three hours after the full-term calf was pulled out. All of the control heifers had normal gestation and parturition. No gross abnormalities were seen in the placentae of the infected heifers, but histological sections of the heifers infected in the third trimester of pregnancy revealed more mononuclear cells than in those of the uninfected controls. Postmortem examination of the dead premature calves showed lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, serous atrophy of perirenal and pelvic fat, epicardial petechiae, and blood-tinged peritoneal and pericardial fluids. Histologically, there were slight myocardial haemorrhages and edema. T. vivax was recovered from the blood of one of the premature calves. Both birth weights and PCV were affected by the experimental maternal infection in the first- and third-trimester calves. The birth weights and PCV of calves of infected dams were lower than those for the calves of the control heifers. This work therefore demonstrates transplacental transmission of T. vivax in heifers. 相似文献

采用随机扩增多态 DNA(RAPD)分析研究了中国3种珍稀濒危兰科植物硬叶兜兰(Paphiopedilum micranthum Tang et Wang)、麻栗坡兜兰(P. malipoense S.C.Chen et Tsi)和独花兰(Changnienia amoena Chien)的遗传多样性与群体遗传结构.12个RAPD引物在2种兜兰中共扩增出131条带.对4个硬叶兜兰群体的检测表明其物种水平的多态条带百分率(PPB)为 71.6%,Nei 的基因多样度(h)为 0.217 1,Shannon多样性指数 (I) 为 0.330 1;4个群体的平均多样性水平为 PPB = 45.2%,h = 0.145 7,I = 0.220 4,低于远交兰花的平均水平.在总遗传变异中,群体间遗传变异占20.31%,略高于远交物种的平均水平.在物种水平上,麻栗坡兜兰的PPB为49.5%,h为0.117 4,I为0.176 4,均大大低于硬叶兜兰.对11个独花兰群体采用16个RAPD引物共扩增出119条带.物种水平PPB=76.5%,h=0.194 1,I=0.305 8;在群体水平上,上述3个指标的平均值则分别为37.2%、0.119 7和0.181 0,均低于远交兰花的平均水平.群体间的遗传变异占45.27%,遗传分化明显高于远交物种的平均水平.导致3个物种遗传多样性偏低而群体间遗传分化较高的主要原因在于人为的过度采挖和生境的片断化.研究结果为兰花保护策略和措施的制定提供了理论基础. 相似文献

The validity and reliability of haematuria when used as screening criteria in community diagnosis of urinary schistosomiasis is presented. Between May and July, 1998, 1173 persons were screened for haematuria and examined for the presence of eggs of Schistosoma haematobium in their urine from all participating households in the Ozitem area of Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. Haematuria showed a sensitivity rate of 41.0% and specificity of 82.0% when used to identify cases of urinary schistosomiasis. Some factors that influenced the validity of haematuria as a diagnostic criterion are discussed. The use of haematuria amongst subjects in the first twenty years of their life is recommended. 相似文献

The effect of inoculation dose of Sarcocystis neurona sporocysts on the development of clinical neurologic disease in horses was investigated. Twenty-four seronegative weanling horses were subjected to the natural stress of transport and then randomly assigned to 6 treatment groups of 4 horses each. Horses were then immediately inoculated with either 10(2), 10(3), 10(4), 10(5), or 10(6) S. neurona sporocysts or placebo using nasogastric tube and housed indoors. Weekly neurologic examinations were performed by a blinded observer. Blood was collected weekly for antibody determination by Western blot analysis. Cerebrospinal fluid was collected before inoculation and before euthanasia for S. neurona antibody determination.Horses were killed and necropsied between 4 and 5 wk after inoculation. Differences were detected among dose groups based on seroconversion times, severity of clinical neurologic signs, and presence of microscopic lesions. Seroconversion of challenged horses was observed as early as 14 days postinfection in the 10(6) sporocyst dose group. Mild to moderate clinical signs of neurologic disease were produced in challenged horses from all groups, with the most consistent signs seen in the 10(6) sporocyst dose group. Histologic lesions suggestive of S. neurona infection were detected in 4 of the 20 horses fed sporocysts. Parasites were not detected in equine tissues by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, or bioassay in gamma-interferon gene knockout mice. Control horses remained seronegative for the duration of the study and had no histologic evidence of protozoal infection. 相似文献

Indiscriminate discharge of pharmaceutical waste into the aquatic ecosystem may pose serious health challenges to aquatic biota. The effect of acute exposure to ibuprofen was evaluated using changes in behaviour and haematological parameters under static bio-assay method in Clarias gariepinus. Test specimens were exposed to acute concentrations of ibuprofen (0.28, 0.33, 0.38, 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h durations respectively. Behavioural and phenotypic changes were observed in surviving fish. There were significant (p < 0.05) concentration and duration-dependent increases in erythrocyte (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), pack cell volume (PCV) and leukocytes (WBC) in treated fish compared to the control. Insignificant decreases (p > 0.05) in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were observed in treated fish compared to the control. Ibuprofen elicited dose and duration- dependent decrease in neutrophil counts with the decreases being significant (p < 0.05) in the higher doses of 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1. Ibuprofen did not elicit any significant changes in monocytes, basophils and eosinophils. Changes observed in this study showed that ibuprofen negatively affected the health of the fish and we recommend that discharge of ibuprofen into the aquatic environment should be monitored and controlled. 相似文献

The CpG Island Methylator Phenotype (CIMP) is fundamental to an important subset of colorectal cancer; however, its cause is unknown. CIMP is associated with microsatellite instability but is also found in BRAF mutant microsatellite stable cancers that are associated with poor prognosis. The isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) gene causes CIMP in glioma due to an activating mutation that produces the 2-hydroxyglutarate oncometabolite. We therefore examined IDH1 alteration as a potential cause of CIMP in colorectal cancer. The IDH1 mutational hotspot was screened in 86 CIMP-positive and 80 CIMP-negative cancers. The entire coding sequence was examined in 81 CIMP-positive colorectal cancers. Forty-seven cancers varying by CIMP-status and IDH1 mutation status were examined using Illumina 450K DNA methylation microarrays. The R132C IDH1 mutation was detected in 4/166 cancers. All IDH1 mutations were in CIMP cancers that were BRAF mutant and microsatellite stable (4/45, 8.9%). Unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis identified an IDH1 mutation-like methylation signature in approximately half of the CIMP-positive cancers. IDH1 mutation appears to cause CIMP in a small proportion of BRAF mutant, microsatellite stable colorectal cancers. This study provides a precedent that a single gene mutation may cause CIMP in colorectal cancer, and that this will be associated with a specific epigenetic signature and clinicopathological features. 相似文献
