Understanding how insular ecosystems recover or are restructured after the eradication of an invasive species is crucial in evaluating conservation success and prioritizing island conservation efforts. Globally, herbivores have been removed from 762 islands, most with limited active restoration actions following eradication. Few studies have documented the effects of invasive herbivore removal after multiple decades of passive recovery. Here we evaluate recovery of vegetation on Santa Cruz Island, California, after the removal of feral sheep (Ovis aries) in 1984. We repeat a study conducted in 1980, and examine vegetation changes 28 years after the eradication. Before eradication, grazed areas were characterized by reduced plant cover, high exposure of bare ground, and erosion. After 28 years of passive recovery, transect data showed a 23% increase in woody overstory, whereas analysis of photographs from landscapes photographed pre‐ and post‐eradication showed a 26% increase in woody vegetation. Whole island vegetation maps similarly showed a transition from grass/bare ground (74.3% of cover) to woody plants (77.2% of cover), indicating the transition away from predominantly exotic annual grassland toward a community similar to the overstory of coastal scrubland but with an understory dominated by non‐native annual grasses. We estimate that replacement of grasses/bare ground by native woody vegetation has led to 70 and 17% increases in the stored carbon and nitrogen pools on the island, respectively. Our results demonstrate that these island ecosystems can experience significant recovery of native floral communities without intensive post‐eradication restoration, and results of recovery may take decades to be realized.  相似文献

Many species face increasing drought under climate change. Plasticity has been predicted to strongly influence species' drought responses, but broad patterns in plasticity have not been examined for key drought tolerance traits, including turgor loss or ‘wilting’ point (πtlp). As soil dries, plants shift πtlp by accumulating solutes (i.e. ‘osmotic adjustment’). We conducted the first global analysis of plasticity in Δπtlp and related traits for 283 wild and crop species in ecosystems worldwide. Δπtlp was widely prevalent but moderate (?0.44 MPa), accounting for 16% of post‐drought πtlp. Thus, pre‐drought πtlp was a considerably stronger predictor of post‐drought πtlp across species of wild plants. For cultivars of certain crops Δπtlp accounted for major differences in post‐drought πtlp. Climate was correlated with pre‐ and post‐drought πtlp, but not Δπtlp. Thus, despite the wide prevalence of plasticity, πtlp measured in one season can reliably characterise most species' constitutive drought tolerances and distributions relative to water supply.  相似文献

Mastocarpus stellatus and Chondrus crispus are red macroalgae that co-dominate the lower rocky intertidal zones of the northern Atlantic coast. M. stellatus is more tolerant than C. crispus of environmental stresses, particularly those experienced during winter. This difference in tolerance has been attributed, in part, to greater contents or activities of certain antioxidants in M. stellatus. We compared the photosynthetic capacities and activities of three antioxidant enzymes--superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR)--as well as the contents of ascorbate from fronds of M. stellatus and C. crispus collected over a year. Photosynthetic capacity increased in winter, but did not differ between species in any season. The activities of the three antioxidant enzymes and the contents of ascorbate were significantly greater in tissues collected during months with mean air and water temperatures below 7.5 degrees C ("cold" months; December, February, March, April) than in months with mean air temperatures above 11 degrees C ("warm" months; June, July, August, October). Overall, C. crispus had significantly greater SOD and APX activities, while M. stellatus had higher ascorbate contents. Species-specific differences in GR activity depended upon mean monthly temperatures at the time of tissue collection; C. crispus had higher activities during cold months, whereas M. stellatus had higher activities during warm months. Taken together, these data indicate that increased ROS scavenging capacity is a part of winter acclimatization; however, only trends in ascorbate content support the hypothesis that greater levels of antioxidants underlie the relatively greater winter tolerance of M. stellatus in comparison to C. crispus.  相似文献

There is interrelationship of the environmental conditions and fish health. Decrease or increase of pollution in aquatic ecosystem have direct impact on presence or absence of parasites. Fish living under optimum environmental, well-nourished conditions are more resistant to diseases than fish weakened by malnutrition caused by parasite infestation or due to deterioration of environmental conditions because ofpollution. Fish encounters common parasites in wild and in culture systems. Parasites attach to the host through suckers and hooks and make their way inside the host through different means, which include skin, through mouth along with food, by means of gills. The hosts were collected during Jan 2019 to Jan 2020 from river Veshaw. During this study it was observed that presence of parasites causes some changes in fish which can serve as indicators of deterioration in aquatic habitat. Clinical signs were noticed in fish hosts collected from sites which received waste due to anthropogenic activities. Parasitic anomalies in the host collected from polluted site was observed to include body deformaties, gastric distention, lesions in gut, increased mucus production, damage in gill filaments etc.  相似文献

The B form of DNA exists in equilibrium with the Z form and is mainly affected by sequence, electrostatic interactions, and steric effects. C8-purine substitution shifts the equilibrium toward the Z form though how this interaction overcomes the unfavorable electrostatic interactions and decrease in stacking in the Z form has not been determined. Here, a series of C8-arylguanine derivatives, bearing a para-substituent were prepared and the B/Z equilibrium determined. B/Z ratios were measured by CD and conformational effects of the aryl substitution determined by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The para-substituent was found to have a significant effect on the B/Z DNA equilibrium caused by altering base-pair stacking of the B form and modifying the hydration/ion shell of the B form. A unique melting temperature versus salt concentration was observed and provides evidence relevant to the mechanism of B/Z conformational interconversion.  相似文献

Identified in the early 1980s as a surrogate marker of the sympathetic nervous system component of the stress response, there has been renewed interest in measuring salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) to test biosocial models of stress vulnerability. This brief report presents studies that document that oral fluids from the parotid and submandibular gland areas had higher sAA values than did whole saliva specimens, and sAA values in whole saliva were higher than levels measured in oral fluids from the sublingual gland area. sAA in oral fluids from the parotid and submandibular gland areas showed the highest and more pronounced diurnal variation than levels in whole saliva, and sAA in sublingual saliva showed the lowest and shallowest diurnal variation. When this source of inherent variability in sAA activity levels is not controlled for by collecting oral fluids consistently from specific gland areas, the detection of individual differences, associations between sAA and “behavioral” variables, and intra-individual change in sAA levels may be compromised. Awareness, and management, of this ubiquitous source of measurement error in sAA are essential to ensure the success of future research on the correlates and concomitants of sAA levels, stress-related reactivity and recovery, and diurnal variation.  相似文献
