Summary Vigna unguiculata cv. 58–185 grown in a sterile Dek soil was inoculated withRhizobium sp. orRhizobium sp. plusGlomus mosseae. Response of the host plant to the treatments was estimated by periodic measurements of shoot and nodule dry weights, N2 fixation (C2H2 reduction activity) and N and P contents up to the 50th day of the growth cycle. It was only 45 days after planting that shoot dry weight of dually inoculated plants differed significantly from that of plants inoculated withRhizobium sp. alone. Nodule dry weight and N2 fixation of dually inoculated plants were significantly higher than those of plants inoculated withRhizobium sp. alone from day 20 after planting, but there was no significant difference in N content (%). During the first 20 days, shoot P content (%) of both sets of plants decreased progressively, P content of dually inoculated plants being lower than that of the others. Later, P content of dually inoculated plants increased rapidly whereas P content of the other plants remained constant. Increase in nodule dry weight, N2 fixation and P content of dually inoculated plants corresponded to the onset of the development of the extra-radical hyphae ofGlomus mosseae. In the rhizosphere.
Resumen Se cultivóVigna unguiculata cv. 58–185 en un suelo estéril tipo Dek, se inoculó conRhizobium sp. o conRhizobium sp. másGlomus mosseae. La respuesta de la planta huésped a los tratamientos se estudió midiendo periodicamente el peso seco de la parte aerea y de los nódulos, la fijación de N (actividad reductora de C2H2) y los contenidos de N y P hasta el 50° día del ciclo de crecimiento. La diferencia entre el peso seco de la parte aerea de las plantas con doble inoculación y aquellas inoculadas conRhizobium sp. unicamente, no fue significativa hasta 45 días despúés de la siembra. A los 20 días de la siembra tanto el peso seco de los nódulos como la fijación de nitrógeno de las plantas con doble inoculación eran significativamente superiores a los valores obtenidos para las plantas con soloRhizobium sp., aunque no se observaron diferencias en el contenido en N (%). Durante los primeros 20 días del ciclo el contenido en P (%) de ambos grupos de plantas disminuyó progresivamente, siendo los valores obtenidos por las plantas con doble inoculación inferiores a los de las demás. Más tarde el contenido en P de las plantas con doble inoculación aumentó rapidamente manteniéndose constante el de las demás. El incremento en el peso seco de los nódulos, en la fijación de N y en el contenido en P de las plantas con doble inoculación se correspondió con el inicio del desarrollo de las hifas extraradiculares deGlomus mosseae.

Résumé On a inoculéV. unguiculata poussant dans un sol Dek stérile avecRhizobium etRhizobium plusGlomus mosseae. On a recherché la réponse de la plante-hôte à ces deux traitements en estimant périodiquement les poids des nodules et des parties aériennes de la plante, la fixation d'azote (activité réductrice de C2H2), les teneurs en N et P jusqu'au 50e jour du cycle de végétation. C'est seulement au 45e jour après la plantation que le poids sec des parties aériennes des plantes inoculées avec deux symbiotes (plantes doublement inoculées) diffère significativement de celui des plantes inoculées avec Rhizobium seul. Le poids sec des nodules et la fixation N2 des plantes doublement inoculées sont significativement plus élevés que ceux des plantes inoculées avecRhizobium seul au 20e jour après la plantation mais il n'y a pas de différence significative pour la teneur en N (%). Pendant les 20 premiers jours, la teneur en P (%) des parties aériennes des deux catégories de plantes décroit progressivement; la teneur en P des plantes doublement inoculées est plus faible que celle des plantes inoculées seulement avecRhizobium. The influences of seasons, plant age, and physicochemical properties of the soil on surface and deep biological arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus parameters associated with Acacia albida were assessed in different areas of Senegal. More indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal propagules were found in the localities of the Sudano-Guinean zone (Djinaki and Kabrousse) than in those of the Sahelian zone (Louga and Diokoul), and species belonging to the genera Glomus, Gigaspora, Acaulospora, and Sclerocystis prevailed. The numbers of total and viable spores increased more during the rainy season than during the dry season (about 108% more total spores and 262% more viable spores). Similarly, both total and viable spores were more prevalent around young Acacia trees than old trees. However, the intensities of root colonization did not differ in each ecoclimatic zone.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using the 15N isotope dilution method and two reference plants, Parkia biglobosa and Tamarindus indica to estimate nitrogen fixed in four Acacia species: A raddiana, A. senegal, A. seyal and Faidherbia albida (synonym Acacia albida). For the reference plants, the 15N enrichments in leaves, stems and roots were similar. With the fixing plants, leaves and stems had similar 15N enrichments; they were higher than the 15N enrichment of roots. The amounts of nitrogen fixed at 5 months after planting were similar using either reference plant. Estimates of the percentage of N derived from fixation (%Ndfa) for the above ground parts, in contrast to %Ndfa in roots, were similar to those for the whole plant. However, none of the individual plant parts estimated accurately total N fixed in the whole plant, and excluding the roots resulted in at least 30% underestimation of the amounts of N fixed. Between species, differences in N2 fixation were observed, both for %Ndfa and total N fixed. For %Ndfa, the best were A. seyal (average, 63%) and A. raddiana (average, 62%), being at least twice the %Ndfa in A. senegal and F. albida. Because of its very high N content, A. seyal was clearly the best in total N fixed, fixing 1.62 g N plant–1 compared to an average of 0.48 g N plant–1 for the other Acacia species. Our results show the wide variability existing between Acacia species in terms of both %Ndfa and total N fixed: A. seyal was classified as having a high N2 fixing potential (NFP) while the other Acacia species had a low NFP.  相似文献

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.)) is an important crop for food security in Senegal; therefore, understanding the genetic diversity of local germplasm is relevant for crop improvement and genetic maintenance in the era of climate change. For this purpose, 15 microsatellite markers were used to estimate the genetic diversity of Senegalese cowpea germplasm, including 671 accessions grown in eight regions and 66 wild relatives and intermediate forms (weedy). For the cultivated, the main expected heterozygosity (mHe) ranged between 0.317 (Fatick) and 0.439 (South). A narrow genetic variation between accessions from the different regions was observed with genetic similarity ranging from 0.861 to 0.965 and genetic differentiation indices (Fst) between 0.018 and 0.100. The accessions from southern Senegal (Kédougou, Sédhiou, and Kolda regions) are more diverse than the others. However, the accessions from the North (Saint-Louis) are genetically different from other regions. The diversity analysis in wild relatives from Senegal, which had never been performed before, revealed that the wild/weedy forms remain more diverse than the cultivated with genetic diversity values (He) of 0.389 and 0.480, respectively. STRUCTURE software divided the Senegalese germplasm into five subpopulations. Three of them (i, ii, and iii) included only cultivated accessions from several regions, one (v) mainly from Saint-Louis, and one (iv) the wild/weedy with some cultivated accessions. Our results support the hypothesis that Vigna unguiculata var. spontanea is the wild progenitor of cowpea. The accessions from the South, the northern recession accessions, and the wild/weedy could serve as sources of new genes for the genetic improvement of cowpea in Senegal.

Background

Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) has been introduced as an important method for mining biological data. Though there currently exists packages implemented in R and other programming languages, they either provide only a few optimization algorithms or focus on a specific application field. There does not exist a complete NMF package for the bioinformatics community, and in order to perform various data mining tasks on biological data.

Results

We provide a convenient MATLAB toolbox containing both the implementations of various NMF techniques and a variety of NMF-based data mining approaches for analyzing biological data. Data mining approaches implemented within the toolbox include data clustering and bi-clustering, feature extraction and selection, sample classification, missing values imputation, data visualization, and statistical comparison.

Conclusions

A series of analysis such as molecular pattern discovery, biological process identification, dimension reduction, disease prediction, visualization, and statistical comparison can be performed using this toolbox.

OBJECTIVES: Ethnic differences in prostate cancer incidence are well documented, with African-Americans having among the highest rates in the world. Ethnic differences in genotypes for genes associated with androgen metabolism including SRD5A2 and CYP3A4 also may exist. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in these genotypes by ethnicity. METHODS: We studied cancer-free controls representative of four groups: 147 African Americans, 410 Caucasian-Americans, 129 Ghanaians, and 178 Senegalese. PCR-based genotype analysis was undertaken to identify two alleles (V89L, A49T) at SRD5A2 and *1B allele at CYP3A4. RESULTS: Differences were observed for V89L (variant frequency of 30% in Caucasians, 27% in African Americans, 19% in Ghanaians, and 18% in Senegalese, p = 0.002) and were observed for CYP3A4*1B (variant frequencies of 8% in Caucasians, 59% in African Americans, 81% in Ghanaians, and 78% in Senegalese, p = 0.0001). Pooled data combining the present data and previously published data from from Asian, Hispanic, and Arab cancer-free controls showed significant ethnic differences for SRD5A2 and CYP3A4 polymorphisms. Overall, Asians were least likely to have alleles associated with increased prostate cancer risk, while Africans were most likely to have those alleles. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that ethnicity-specific differences in genotype frequencies exist for SRD5A2 and CYP3A4. Africans and African-Americans have the highest frequency of those alleles that have previously been associated with increased prostate cancer risk. Future studies should address whether allele frequency differences in part explain differences in prostate cancer incidence in these populations.  相似文献

Background

Malnutrition and food insecurity are associated with increased mortality and poor clinical outcomes among people living with HIV/AIDS; however, the prevalence of malnutrition and food insecurity among people living with HIV/AIDS in Senegal, West Africa is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of food insecurity and malnutrition among HIV-infected adults in Senegal, and to identify associations between food insecurity, malnutrition, and HIV outcomes.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional study at outpatient clinics in Dakar and Ziguinchor, Senegal. Data were collected using participant interviews, anthropometry, the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, the Individual Dietary Diversity Scale, and chart review.

Results

One hundred and nine HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 participants were enrolled. The prevalence of food insecurity was 84.6% in Dakar and 89.5% in Ziguinchor. The prevalence of severe food insecurity was 59.6% in Dakar and 75.4% in Ziguinchor. The prevalence of malnutrition (BMI <18.5) was 19.2% in Dakar and 26.3% in Ziguinchor. Severe food insecurity was associated with missing clinic appointments (p = 0.01) and not taking antiretroviral therapy due to hunger (p = 0.02). Malnutrition was associated with lower CD4 cell counts (p = 0.01).

Conclusions

Severe food insecurity and malnutrition are highly prevalent among HIV-infected adults in both Dakar and Ziguinchor, and are associated with poor HIV outcomes. Our findings warrant further studies to determine the root causes of malnutrition and food insecurity in Senegal, and the short- and long-term impacts of malnutrition and food insecurity on HIV care. Urgent interventions are needed to address the unacceptably high rates of malnutrition and food insecurity in this population.  相似文献

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases that cleave matrix, soluble and membrane-bound proteins and are regulated by their endogenous inhibitors the tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs). MMP-2 and MMP-9 are two of the MMPs which are essential to contribute to inflammatory and degenerative processes in injured nerves. The aim of the present study was to examine expression and activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the injured and control groups frog sciatic nerves using gelatin zymography. Our investigation demonstrated for the first time as far as we know the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in frog sciatic nerve. The expression and activity of MMP-9 were increased two fold on average following ligation. By contrast, MMP-2 activities remained unchanged. These findings suggest that we can consider MMP-9 as a marker for degenerative changes that follow nerve ligation in frog nerve.  相似文献
