One hundred nineteen pen-raised wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) from 12 locations in nine states in the United States were examined for coccidia by sugar flotation of intestinal contents and mucosa or by subinoculating the contents into uninfected domestic turkeys. Seventy-eight (66%) of the turkeys were positive for coccidia. There were no differences in the frequency of coccidia among adult, sub-adult or juvenile turkeys. More females (75%) were infected than males (48%). The species of coccidia from 30 of the turkeys were identified based on microscopic examination of oocysts, fresh scrapings, stained sections and inoculations of bobwhites (Colinus virginianus). The frequency of each species was Eimeria meleagrimitis (97%), E. gallopavonis (47%), E. meleagridis (27%), E. dispersa (17%), E. innocua-E. subrotunda (13%), E. adenoeides (7%) and an undescribed species (3%). Of the 30 turkeys in which the species of coccidia was determined, 30% had a single species infection, 40% had two species, 20% had three species and 10% had four species. 相似文献

The results of surveillance for hog cholera (HC) in wild swine (Sus scrofa) collected from throughout the United States from 1979 to 1987 are presented. Sera collected from 1,218 wild swine and tissues from 637 were evaluated for HC antibodies and virus, respectively. Included within this surveillance were samples from Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, California, where HC virus had been deliberately introduced into wild swine during the 1950's in attempts to eradicate these animals. All evaluations were considered negative for HC. It appears that the HC virus does not maintain itself in dispersed swine populations and that wild swine have not remained a reservoir of HC since its eradication in domestic swine in the United States. 相似文献

In summer 1986, a study was conducted to evaluate raccoon (Procyon lotor) acceptance of oral baits that could be used for rabies vaccination. One thousand wax-coated sponge bait cubes were filled with 5 mg of a seromarker (iophenoxic acid), placed in polyethylene bags, and hand-distributed in an 80 ha area within an urban National Park in Washington, D. C. (USA). After 3 wk, target and nontarget animals were trapped and blood samples collected to evaluate bait uptake. Thirty-three of 52 (63%) raccoons had elevated blood iodine levels indicating they had eaten at least one bait, 13 (25%) were negative, and six (12%) had marginal values. These results indicate that sponge baits hand-placed at a density of 12.4/ha can reach a significant proportion of an urban raccoon population. An update is presented on the distribution of the meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis) of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the southeastern United States. The parasite is widely distributed and common in all or much of Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. It is also common in the northern half of Alabama and Georgia. In contrast, it is rare or absent along the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina. Detecting non-neutral heterogeneity across a region of DNA sequence in the ratio of polymorphism to divergence 总被引:11,自引:4,他引:7
Natural selection, in the form of balancing selection or selective sweeps,
can result in a decoupling of the amounts of molecular polymorphism and
divergence. Thus natural selection can cause some areas of DNA sequence to
have greater silent polymorphism, relative to divergence between species,
than other areas. It would be useful to have a statistical test for
heterogeneity in the polymorphism to divergence ratio across a region of
DNA sequence, one that could identify heterogeneity greater than that
expected from the neutral processes of mutation, drift, and recombination.
The only currently available test requires that a region be arbitrarily
divided into sections that are compared with each other, and the
subjectivity of this division could be problematic. Here a test is proposed
in which runs of polymorphic and fixed sites are counted, where a "run" is
a set of one or more sites of one type preceded and followed by the other
type. The number of runs is smaller than otherwise expected if
polymorphisms are clumped together. By simulating neutral evolution and
comparing the observed number of runs to the simulations, a statistical
test is possible which does not require any a priori decisions about
subdivision.

The integrity of biofilms on voice prostheses used to rehabilitate speech in laryngectomized patients causes unwanted increases in airflow resistance, impeding speech. Biofilm integrity is ensured by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). This study aimed to determine whether synthetic salivary peptides or mucolytics, including N-acetylcysteine and ascorbic acid, influence the integrity of voice prosthetic biofilms. Biofilms were grown on voice prostheses in an artificial throat model and exposed to synthetic salivary peptides, mucolytics and two different antiseptics (chlorhexidine and Triclosan). Synthetic salivary peptides did not reduce the air flow resistance of voice prostheses after biofilm formation. Although both chlorhexidine and Triclosan reduced microbial numbers on the prostheses, only the Triclosan-containing positive control reduced the air flow resistance. Unlike ascorbic acid, the mucolytic N-acetylcysteine removed most EPS from the biofilms and induced a decrease in air flow resistance. 相似文献
