Argon laser surgery is an effective treatment for ectasias and congenital port-wine stains; however, its use in children under the age of 13 is controversial. This paper reviews 202 children under the age of 13 who underwent argon laser treatments for congenital port-wine stains, spider angiomas, epidermal nevi, and lentigines. The clinical characteristics of port-wine stains in 170 children are discussed. Good to excellent results (moderate to complete clearing) in port-wine stains were obtained in 60 percent of patients and seemed to correlate best with lack of blanchability on pressure. Hypertrophic scarring was seen in only 7 children, all of whom had undressed wounds; no significant scarring has been seen in any subsequent child who had maintained a dressed wound postoperatively. 相似文献

Glycophorin has been isolated in pure form from human erythrocyte membranes and reconstituted into lipid vesicles composed of binary mixtures of bovine brain phosphatidylserine (PS) and acyl-chain perdeuterated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC-d62). The effect of protein on lipid melting behavior and order has been monitored with differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The phase diagram for PS/DPPC-d62 is consistent with that previously reported for PS/DPPC (Stewart et al. (1979) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 556, 1-16) and indicates that acyl chain perdeuteration does not greatly alter the lipid mixing characteristics. The use of deuterated lipid allows the examination of lipid order by FT-IR of each lipid component in the binary mixtures as well as in the ternary (lipid/lipid/protein) systems. Addition of glycophorin to a 30:70 PS/DPPC-d62 binary lipid mixture results in a preferential glycophorin/PS interaction leading to bulk lipid enriched in DPPC-d62. This is revealed in two ways: first, through cooperative calorimetric transitions increased in temperature from the binary lipid system and second, through FT-IR melting curves of the DPPC-d62 component which shows transitions increased in both onset and completion temperatures in the presence of protein. In addition, non-cooperative melting events are observed at temperatures below the onset of phase separation. The FT-IR data are used to assign these non-cooperative events to the melting of the PS component. For the 50:50 lipid mixture with protein, two transitions are observed in the DSC experiments. Biochemical reactions, O and K serotypes and presence of P-fimbriae were analysed in 116 Escherichia coli strains isolated in blood cultures from patients with bacteraemia and in 99 faecal strains isolated from healthy individuals. By using biochemical typing, the strains could be grouped into six main clusters with similarity index less than 0.8 (Gower, 1971) and altogether 16 subclusters with similarity index 0.82-0.89. The most discriminating tests between the clusters were fermentation of D-tagatose, saccharose, salicin and sorbose. No single biochemical property could differentiate bacteraemic isolates from faecal strains, although strains isolated from blood were significantly more often found in certain subclusters, whereas other subclusters contained mainly control strains. Bacteraemic strains possessed P-fimbriae more often, especially strains isolated from patients with E. coli in the urine concomitantly with bacteraemia. Equally, no single reaction could separate P-fimbriated from non-P-fimbriated strains. D-Tagatose was fermented more often by the P-fimbriated strains; on the other hand, melibiose and lactose fermentation tests were less often positive. Certain O serotypes (O1, O4, O6, O7, O18 and O25) were more common among bacteraemic isolates than controls. K serotypes such as K1, K5 and K52 were also more frequent among blood isolates. We conclude that a combination of biochemical tests, fimbriation and serotyping might be used to identify potentially pathogenic clusters of E. coli. 相似文献

Summary A total of 30 cases of 46,XX true hermaphroditism was analysed for Y-DNA sequences including the recently cloned gene for male testis-determination SRY. In 3 cases, a portion of the Y chromosome including SRY was present and, in 2 cases, was localised, to Xp22 by in situ hybridisation. Since previous studies have shown that the majority of XX males are generated by an X-Y chromosomal interchange, the Xp22 position of the Yp material suggests that certain cases of hermaphroditism can arise by the same meiotic event. The phenotype in the 3 SRY-positive cases may be caused by X-inactivation resulting in somatic mosaicism of testis-determining factor expression giving rise to both testicular and ovarian tissues. Autosomal or X-linked mutation(s) elsewhere in the sex-determining pathway may explain the phenotype observed in the remaining 27 SRY-negative cases. 相似文献

A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer has been interfaced with a surface balance and a new external reflection infrared sampling accessory, which permits the acquisition of spectra from protein monolayers in situ at the air/water interface. The accessory, a sample shuttle that permits the collection of spectra in alternating fashion from sample and background troughs, reduces interference from water vapor rotation-vibration bands in the amide I and amide II regions of protein spectra (1520-1690 cm-1) by nearly an order of magnitude. Residual interference from water vapor absorbance ranges from 50 to 200 microabsorbance units. The performance of the device is demonstrated through spectra of synthetic peptides designed to adopt alpha-helical, antiparallel beta-sheet, mixed beta-sheet/beta-turn, and unordered conformations at the air/water interface. The extent of exchange on the surface can be monitored from the relative intensities of the amide II and amide I modes. Hydrogen-deuterium exchange may lower the amide I frequency by as much as 11-12 cm-1 for helical secondary structures. This shifts the vibrational mode into a region normally associated with unordered structures and leads to uncertainties in the application of algorithms commonly used for determination of secondary structure from amide I contours of proteins in D2O solution. 相似文献

Encapsulation may provide increased stability and antimicrobial efficiency to bacteriocins. In this work, the antilisterial peptide pediocin was encapsulated in nanovesicles prepared from partially purified soybean phosphatidylcholine. The maintenance of antimicrobial activity and properties of free and encapsulated pediocin was observed during 13 days at 4 °C, and after this period, the encapsulated pediocin retained 50 % its initial activity. The maintenance of the bioactive properties of free and encapsulated pediocin was observed against different species of Listeria, inhibiting Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua and Listeria ivanovii. The size of vesicles containing pediocin was determined by dynamic light scattering as an average of 190 nm, with little change throughout the observation period. Polydispersity index values were around 0.201 and are considered satisfactory, indicating an adequate size distribution of liposomes. The efficiency of encapsulation was 80 %. Considering these results, the protocol used was appropriate for the encapsulation of this bacteriocin. Results demonstrate the production of stable nanoparticulate material. The maintenance of the properties of pediocin encapsulated in liposomes is fundamental to prospect the stability in different conditions of the food matrix. 相似文献

Objectives
Cholestasis has been reported during the course of congenital hypothalamic-pituitary deficiency, but crucial information is lacking regarding both its origin and prognosis. We aimed to characterize the course of cholestasis and factors contributing to it in patients with deficiency due to pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS).Methods
We conducted a retrospective single-center, case-cohort study including 16 patients with PSIS diagnosed before one year of age. We collected clinical and biological parameters from medical records and compared the characteristics of the endocrine syndrome in PSIS patients with and without cholestasis.Results
5/16 patients had cholestasis, all with a neonatal onset and multiple hypothalamic-pituitary deficiency. Patients with cholestasis presented with lower Apgar score and higher rate of ophthalmic malformations: 3/5 vs 1/11, p = 0.03 and 5/5 vs 4/11, p = 0.02, respectively. The plasma cortisol level was strongly decreased in patients with cholestasis: 12.4 ng/mL (8–15 ng/mL) vs 79.4 ng/mL (10–210 ng/mL), p = 0.04. Cholestasis resolved within 9 months following hormone supplementation. No development of chronic liver disease was observed during a median follow-up of 9.4 years (range, 1.3–13.3 years).Conclusions
Cholestasis is a frequent symptom at presentation of PSIS during the neonatal period that may help earlier diagnosis and that indicates a profound cortisol deficiency. 相似文献9.

Evidence that organisms evolve rapidly enough to alter ecological dynamics necessitates investigation of the reciprocal links between ecology and evolution. Data that link genotype to phenotype to ecology are needed to understand both the process and ecological consequences of rapid evolution. Here, we quantified the suite of elements in individuals (i.e., ionome) and differences in the fluxes of key nutrients across populations of threespine stickleback. We find that allelic variation associated with freshwater adaptation that controls bony plating is associated with changes in the ionome and nutrient recycling. More broadly, we find that adaptation of marine stickleback to freshwater conditions shifts the ionomes of natural populations and populations raised in common gardens. In both cases ionomic divergence between populations was primarily driven by differences in trace elements rather than elements typically associated with bone. These findings demonstrate the utility of ecological stoichiometry and the importance of ionome‐wide data in understanding eco‐evolutionary dynamics. 相似文献

Testosterone administration increases growth hormone (GH) secretion and decreases the plasma leptin concentration in men. We evaluated the effect of increased GH secretion due to short-term testosterone treatment on leptin concentrations. Ten boys aged 14.8 +/- 0.2 (mean +/- SE) years with transient GH deficiency caused by pubertal delay were evaluated before and after (3 months) 4 intramuscular injections of 100 mg testosterone heptylate, given at 15-day intervals. The leptin concentration decreased from 5.4 +/- 1.3 to 3. 6 +/- 1.1 microgram/l (p < 0.001), despite a weight gain of 3.4 +/- 0.5 kg. There were significant increases in body mass index (BMI), from -0.2 +/- 0.5 to 0.2 +/- 0.5 SD, p < 0.005, in GH peak after stimulation test, from 6.3 +/- 0.5 to 21.7 +/- 2.9 microgram/l, p < 0. 0003, in plasma testosterone, from 0.6 +/- 0.1 to 6.5 +/- 1.3 microgram/l, p < 0.001, in insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), from 152 +/- 21 to 330 +/- 30 microgram/l, p < 0.0001, and in IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), from 4.2 +/- 0.5 to 5.4 +/- 0.4 mg/l, p < 0.01. But there were no changes in blood glucose (4.7 +/- 0.1 and 4.8 +/- 0.1 mmol/l), or plasma fasting insulin (9.0 +/- 1.2 and 8.1 +/- 1.3 mIU/l). The leptin concentrations were positively correlated with the BMI before (p < 0.03) and after (p < 0.04) testosterone, but not with the GH peak after stimulation, or with plasma testosterone, IGF-I or IGFBP-3. The leptin and insulin concentrations after testosterone treatment were positively correlated (p < 0.04). Thus, short-term testosterone treatment of boys with pubertal delay decreases their leptin concentrations. The lack of correlation with GH secretion or with its changes, despite the dramatic increase in GH secretion, and the lack of change in insulin are additional features suggesting that testosterone increases the leptin concentration mainly by an effect on adipose tissue. 相似文献
